Statehood quarters are the most collectible current coins in the market. Error coins are the newest of the collectible trends. Combine them both and you got something special but is it valuable.
I found this in my change about a 2 years or more back. It is a South Carolina quarter 2000P with an off-center error.
Obverse
When I first found it the only reference I had was the back of the U.S. Coins Red Book which at the time listed it at $150, today's Red Book has it for $175 but this is for 20% off center. I bought a guide book on errors and it showed how to measure your off-centerness. I estimated this coin at no more then 15% without being 100% sure.
Recently I stumbled upon a site http://error-coins.com/ that I could ask better experts than me to evaluate this and a copper dime. The site admin said this...
The South Carolina quarter looks to be about 10% off-center. It's worth around $50.I trust this judgment.
The copper dime is still an unknown error so I'll blog about it later when I can weigh it.
Back to error quarters there are 8 common types of error and depending on the state and rarity affects the value. If I chose to sell this the same time I found it I could have gotten more due to low reporting but as more are found the value went down. This always something to think about with error coins.
Here's the stats for a normal South Carolina P quarter....
Year: 2000P
Metal: 91.67% Copper 8.33% Nickel
Mintage: 742,576,000
Value: AU-50 $0.35 (AU=about uncirculated)

A lot depends on eye appeal but this is a Capped Die error generally starting at $150.00 if the state can be identified possibly more.

It is a little light but no off-metal error comes to mind.
I think the coin was altered but at this point the only way to make sure is have someone look at it in hand. Maybe a coin club can help, sorry I couldn't be more specific.
I have a state quarter with no serrated edge. About the size of a nickel since the edge is gone. Also there is no stamp on the back. It is just copper colored. It is a denver mint, i cannot give you the date or state since it would be found on the back.

Damaged, somebody cut it on purpose.
This as an error is not possible.
I have a 2005-P Kansas quarter. Both sides of the coin do not seem to show a very strong strike like a regular coin. The reverse to me is the worst the lettering at the edges is very faded and the overall design is not very sharp at all, but the edges of the coin are raised like a normal coin. Could this be a weak strike or something else?

Yes, it could be a weak or Die adjustment strike they start at $25.00 depending on eye appeal.
These can only be verified by a grading company.

Thank you for your time.

Sounds like damage shot by a bb gun, no extra value.
Sorry, I wasn't very clear. It is competely normal on the other side - no indent. The bulge is clearly from the mint as it is stamped.

Is the bulge like extra metal with no design elements?
Or is it like a bubble was trapped under the design with no extra metal on top?

I have a 1967 washington quarter with uniform lack of reeds(?)/ridges on it's edge. There are, more specifically, ridges/reeds on the edge but are so faint as to be almost non-existent and even those are only on a portion (about an eighth) of the way around. The rest is almost smooth but one can see where ridges would have been using magnification. It is mostly smooth to a fingernail all the way around.
I do not suspect normal wear could have caused this as the rest of the coin's relief stands out clearly as does the rim (both sides). The overall effect of the uniform nature of the missing ridges also indicates that normal circulation wear could not have caused this and there do not exist tool marks that would indicate that someone altered the coin.
is this the kind of error that merits further consideration?
1967 washington quarter with uniform lack of reeds(?)/ridges on it's edge...is this the kind of error that merits further consideration?
Despite not looking worn it is most likely wear. I have seen this many times and the reeds can go faster than most people think.
If not it is either a weak strike made by an old collar or Struck Through Grease.
Either way no extra value and not significant in any way.
I have a North Carolina state quarter that is a die break. just curious what the value of it is?

I have a 1995 Washington head quarter in very good shape. Denver Mint Mark. The right edge is very and has nice ridging and is mostly silver. The left edge is very thick (will not fit in a coin slot)and has no ridging and is mostly copper colored. The face side of the coin is bowled in on the left edge. Is this an error or a double strike and is it worth anything? Thanks

Sounds damaged, the bowled shape is not possible as an error most likely someone banged or heated the coin by accident.

You're description "its been scratched up and stuff it looked like somebody tryed to engrave sumthing of their own on it and didnt succeed."
Means this could be done by someone at home.
Unless you can describe better or show a picture I can not give an accurate value.

i have what looks to be a gold plated quarter its gold on both sides.feels lighter than a normal quarter its a 2003 Maine. could it be anything or no?
gold plated quarter its gold on both sides.feels lighter than a normal quarter its a 2003 Maine
No plated quarters are considered damaged and with so little value in gold it has no metal value.
If you suspect it to be complete fake made of pure gold then it would only have metal value.

I have a 2000-P Virginia state quarter that's very shiny (almost proof-like), shows no copper on the reed edge, looks like it's been in circulation, but is definitely not nickel. Heard or seen anything like that?
2000-P Virginia state quarter that's very shiny (almost proof-like), shows no copper on the reed edge, looks like it's been in circulation, but is definitely not nickel.
Could be an Off-metal error worth hundreds, it must be weighed to know exactly.
Could be silver-plated done outside the mint, no extra value. Since you described the shininess I assume it is this one, very common to find in change.
Regarding the weight factor of this 2000-P Virginia State oddball shiny/reed edged quarter, I don't have a exact gram scale. However I did weigh it on a small balance scale against 3 other quarters and it was heaver against each one weighed. I got it back in 2000 and kept it in my state quarter folder. If this was silver, it should have an "S" instead of a "P".
How could this have possibly gotten a "P"?

--Not possible S means it was minted in San Fransisco and they only get the silver blank.
P is from Philly and would never receive silver blanks.
Try to get a 0.01 accurate scale.

No, unless the is Off-Center or larger than normal it is considered damaged.
I have a 1974 kennedy half dollar that appears to be an off center strike. There is a rim/collar on the left side of the face, but not the right side. Also the top of the R and T in Liberty and the 4 in 1974 is very faint. On the back side there is also some faint lettering in the same location just directly opposite the face side. Is this an error coin, valuable or rare.It is in otherwise great condition.Thank you, John, in Canada

This is regarding my Oct 21, 2011 post regarding my 2000-P Virginia State quarter, with no copper cladding in the middle, that looks like silver, and there is no "S" mint mark. I finally got a gram scale that reads .00g. The official weight of this coin is 5.81g, rather than the normal 5.67g. To my knowledge, this is closer in weight to the 1976 bicentennial silver issue weight.
Could this have been struck on a bicentennial silver planchet? What would be it's value, and should I bother sending it in to PGCS? Thanks.

Odd were it made from a modern silver blank it would be 6.25g.
It is not possible for a 1976 silver blank, too much time passed.
I have to assume it was plated, the weight is slightly above tolerance. At this point only a professional grading can tell. My problem is that you would have to pay $60+ to possibly have it come back as unknown, fake, or damaged.
If there is a local coin club in your area ask several members to look at it in hand.
I just got what I think is a canadian dime, pre- 1900. It has queen Victoria's bust on the back with Victoria dei gratia regina, Canada written - no date at all. On the front it has B.Mc.C or L written. I cant seem to find anything on it on the internet...is it worth having it looked at?
Thanks!

Sounds like a Pine Tree Sixpence 1652 which is an American coin (Colonial Issue).
In About-Good which is a very low grade it's about $300.00.
Yours seems to have environmental damage and if cannot be properly graded then it will have no value.
So even if damaged it should be verified as a Pine Tree Sixpence 1652.
Assuming Poor grade it will be about $50. Poor is PO-1 where 70=perfect.
I have a 1988 d quarter. The first 8 is not there. On the obverse side the e in quarter is mis-struck with only the top of the e showing and the d in dollar is showing but is off with the striking also. What would this be worth?

hey man! its a 2008 oklahoma state quarter about 10% to 15% off center about a year ago and just figured it might be worth money now. the edge of the coin is fatter on one side and would not fit in a vending machine! while the other side is completely normal thickness so i know this is an error. the rim around the coin has a flat strip that goes around the little dashes on the sides. about 50% of the side of the coin is completely flat while the other side has choppy ripples whats my value!?

I have a 1988-P quarter and it has a smooth elevated copper rim all the way around the edge. It weighs 5.9 grams and I know the weight of a standard quarter is ~5.75 grams. Could it be that this quarter missed the edging process or somthing?
1988-P quarter and it has a smooth elevated copper rim all the way around the edge. It weighs 5.9 grams and I know the weight of a standard quarter is ~5.75 grams. Could it be that this quarter missed the edging process or somthing?
It should be 5.67 grams so why it is so heavy is not known.
The quarter cannot be made without having an edge. The edge may have been worn down over time it is common.
That said a thick planchet error can cause odd edges about $20.00 in mint state.
It can only be verified by experts, like PCGS.
The only other reason is someone tried to make it into a pendant and changed the edge.
It does have a rim but it is elevated so that my finger nail can clearly catch it. The edge has a thickness of 2.5mm. I'm not sure if there was too much metal so that when it was stamped some "overflowed" out of the stamp. But how would that explain the absence of ridges on the sides?
The edge has a thickness of 2.5mm. I'm not sure if there was too much metal so that when it was stamped some "overflowed" out of the stamp. But how would that explain the absence of ridges on the sides?
A normal quarter should be 1.75mm.
So thick planchet sounds more likely. Because they are thicker than normal the collar that makes the edge does not properly close around the coin.
Again this is also signs of spooning for jewelery.
Someone needs to see it in hand.
Ok thank you very much!!

Just in case weigh it.
Thanks for the response. What will weighing it tell me? I dont think this has been heated because it is too perfect and new looking.
What will weighing it tell me?
--It could be an error made with a different metal and the weight will be different than normal.
I dont think this has been heated because it is too perfect and new looking.
--Heating a coin does not change the design and is often used to improve a coin. It makes a coin shinier and if left too long gives it a copper edge, too much a rainbow color, and even longer a black tint.

1971 quarter that has very exagerated edges/rim on both the front and the back. Is this damage or an error?
Possible a "Finned Rim" error but usually this is only on one side.
If you can place pictures online somewhere that would be great but if not please Google "Finned Rim" to see if your is similar.
They average $20 or more depending on height.
Sorry I think I may have commented somewhere completely random thinking it was right here. But...
I think it may be a "finned rim". the pictures online arent the best and seemed to only have it raised on a portion of the coin. On this quarter is is all around the front and the back at the same level. Does this still fit the "finned rim" catagory?
Also what do you suggest I do with this? I have no idea where or how to go about selling this.
thanks!
Also to describe a bit more, the lettering of LIBERTY, 1971, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and QUARTER DOLLAR are still perfect and follow up the rim a bit so I'm thinking it would be unlikely to be damaged right?
Of course my camera on my phone suddenly stopped working, if I can get it to work I will take a picture of both sides and send you the link.
On this quarter is is all around the front and the back at the same level. Does this still fit the "finned rim" catagory?
--No. Not really it need to be seen in hand or with good pictures to figure out exactly what you have.
That said...
Ungraded they tend to sell best on eBay for $20 or more.
Grading may cost more than the coin is worth. You always try several local dealers or check coin forum to see if anyone is buying.
But with most odd items, eBay is your best bet with good pictures and if your a good seller.
If not just keep it until you are sure you can sell for decent amount. Value only grows over time.

I have a Kansas state quarter that has a very weak G in God, weak W, almost invisible e, T in Trust is almost invisible, very weak s and almost invisible T. The side with the buffalo reads only Kansas with 1861 underneath. The buffalo, hill, and most of the flowers are clear but the rest of the outside rim is blank, except for the num on the bottom slightly right of center under the hill and buffalo. I posted pictures of the front and back on my facebook page http://www.facebook.com/quinn.lauren.3 I believe I made my page and those two picture, just posted public so you can view them. This seems like a pretty unusual coin error. I live in Greenville, SC and there are no PCGS dealers within 100 miles of me according to their website. I also have a few other interesting coins, I'm a cashier at a local gas station, so I run across interesting coins pretty regularly.

I have a 2003 P state quarter from Missouri that shows no copper on the edges of the coin. I picked it out from a coin stack thinking it was a pre '65 silver quarter oh well, The coin seems to weigh the same as a regular quarter though I haven't confirmed this with a scale yet. I think it is just plated but I cannot say without the weight.
I have a 1967 quarter. At the top where it says liberty between the e and the r it id indented. From half way through the R to the top of the quarter the indent is probably one forth through the coin and on the back side the writng is smeared only on the little part. Does this affect the value? Thanks
1967 quarter. At the top where it says liberty between the e and the r it id indented...
This damage will lower the value to just face value.
I have a 1936 quarter. It is is very poor codition. How much do you think it is worth

Hi. I found in change a Kentucky state quarter. Its color is greenish brown. It appears to be missing clad layer. It has no ribbing on the edge and clearly only one color on edge. No way to photo or weigh it yet.lightly circulated. Range of value please.

If a real Missing Clad error...
In Mint State about $150.00
In low grade with green $5.00 or less
I have a 2006 Colorado quarter that appears to be missing the top layer on the head side. It looks like copper. Tail side is normal. The coin seems to be thinner than a regular quarter and weighs 4 grams instead of 6. Wondering if this is worth anything?
2006 Colorado quarter that appears to be missing the top layer on the head side. It looks like copper. Tail side is normal. The coin seems to be thinner than a regular quarter and weighs 4 grams
Possible Missing Clad error the weight is in the correct range, 4.20 grams is average.
About $150.00 but should be verified and graded.
I have a Washington State quarter that came apart in three pieces (front, back & middle). What is it worth?
Washington State quarter that came apart in three pieces (front, back & middle).
Possible “separation-after-strike” although it can happen during minting there is no way to tell and has no extra value.
Freezing and heating a coin can make this happen.
I posted a comment but didn't see it show up so I'm trying again.
See if you can identify this one.

Just damage, a piece of tape covered the silver part and wither water or acid got on the other part.
Thanks. My wife was right. Doh!
Again thanks for your time.
i have a virginia state quarter 2000 year looks like all copper even the edge looks solid copper. let me know thanks.
virginia state quarter 2000 year looks like all copper even the edge looks solid copper
Possibly Missing Clad error, it needs to be weighed.
Also check the surface it should have luster and be smooth. If bumpy or washed out and not sharp then it could be acid damage.
If real about $1,000 but again these are easily faked.
I have a 2007 Wyoming State quarter that is extremly shiny, very refelctive like a mirror. Its edge is normal other than the fact it shiny as well, no clad. The most unsual aspect is that there are two small holes in the rim, 180degrees apart and with a depth of about a 16th of an inch each. One hole is about even with the U on the face side and the other is about even with "GOD WE". It's almost like someone stood the coin on edge and drill into it. Any insights concerning this coin? Thanks.

If the coin has an S mintmark it is a silver coin, if P or D it is a plated clad.
The 2 small holes sound like it placed in a pendant for jewelry, it should not affect the value much if not perfect.
It has a D. Oh well. Thanks again.
Hi I have a 25 cent coin one side has the queen and the other side has the "canada" on top, "25 cents 2007" on the botom but the rest is blank there is no image. does this have an extra value
coin one side has the queen and the other side has the "canada" on top, "25 cents 2007" on the botom but the rest is blank there is no image.
This is one of the 2007 Hockey Series coin, released for collectors with a colorized hockey team logo in that "blank" space.
The problem is the paint used on the coin starts to flake off and fall. This makes the coin worth less the $25.00 mint value.
With no sign of what team it used to be I would guess about $0.50. Only because so few were made.
My brother found a quarter, its 1967 and its slightly bent, lighter than other quarters, the "In God We Trust has no spaces (I don't even know if it should), and on one side its thiker than the othor side. Is it valuble?

Damaged, no extra value.
Probably run over but there is little chance this is a true error since the bent coins do not leave the mint.
Hi, I have a South Carolina D quarter that is noticeably thicker than other quarters (state or not) and has smooth sides. I thought it would be wear and tear but it is nearly perfectly smooth, and for it to be thicker just doesn't seem possible. Any ideas? Thank you in advance :) Also it is a bit lighter than all the other quarters.

Sounds like a spooned quarter.
Spooning is when someone pounds the edge of coin with a spoon or hammer in order to make a ring.
This of course is damage and has no extra value.
I have a 1977 quarter that is not 2 layered. It is super light weight and copper colored around the rim side. It has the reeds too. I can take pic if needed. It's sides are silver colored. Did the clad combination default? Would it be valuble? Never seen one like this before. Thanks!

Possible Missing Clad Layer error average is $50.00 but it needs to be verified in hand.
I have a 1988 US quarter. The 'IN' on 'IN GOD WE TRUST' is a glob, not readable. And the 'T' on 'Trust' appears smashed a little. The last 'A' on 'AMERICA' is almost all the way filled in.

Sounds like a Die Break error about $10.00 but eye appeal and grade makes a big difference.
I have a first flight state quarter. The head side of the quarter is normal. There is not a ridge around the side of it. The tail side shows copper-like color around the outer edge all the way around. Also, the picture is there, but the details of the picture are not present. It is the same size of a normal quarter, but slightly thinner. Would this be worth anything. Thank you.

Possible Mis-Aligned Die error it does not have extra value.
Most likely damage since the ridge is taken off.

I have a miss-print quarter that has tails on both front and back in very nice condition. would something like this be worth anything?
miss-print quarter that has tails on both front and back in very nice condition
This type of error is really not possible it is most likely a Magician's Coin. These are sold for $5.00 in magic shops and often end up in change, I found a few myself.
I HAVE A 1973 GOLD HALF DOLLAR. THE DATE AND WRITING ON THE FRONT AND BACK ARE INDENTED IN TO THE COIN INSTEAD OF RAISED FROM THE COIN LIKE ALL OTHER COINS. IS IT VALUABLE?
1973 GOLD HALF DOLLAR. THE DATE AND WRITING ON THE FRONT AND BACK ARE INDENTED IN TO THE COIN INSTEAD OF RAISED FROM THE COIN LIKE ALL OTHER COINS.
I have no idea, I need to know country and the exact writings on the coin.
A picture would also be helpful using a free photo site like imgur.
I have a 1979 washington quarter. From what i can tell it has no mint mark . It has black stuff on it. When its with other coins it sounds different. I thoght at first it was silver but it has the wrong date. What is my quarter?

Burned or filled with grease, either way no extra value.
I have a 1960 quarter that appears to be squeezed from all around making it appear to be indented on both sides of the quarter and seems as though it was done in error. Any cases of such?

Possible Die Cap error but without a picture I can only assume damage.
Have 1989 Quarter that looks like there was not enough material to cast the coin on two edges. Would like to know the approximate value, if any due to this. I do have photos to share. roger.hampel@gmail.com.
Thanks!
1989 Quarter that looks like there was not enough material to cast the coin on two edges
Sounds like a Clipped Planchet error about $5.00 if less than 15% missing.
I have a cent of 1965 with errors:

Below 9 and 6 other numbers are observed.
Reverse: Under "STATES" i see word "USA". Underneath the building a type of volcano is observed. Among the letters "C, A" of America a letter or number is observed.

No error, just damage.
Most of your coins have no errors just damage or Machine Doubling which doe not have any extra value.
Ok I have a 2001-P North Carolina quarter with approx. 20% copper wash on the front

Does not look like an error. Not to mention that a (1983-1907) coin is impossible.
At most it may be a Die Clash error but it is most likely damage from dirt.
I have money of 1/4 real one (1823 o 1821) copper, mint manila.
coined in the opposite direction in the date, word and lion.

Again I see no error but I am not a Real expert.
I have a 1995 quarter. Im not expecting it to be worth more than 25 cents but I thought it looked odd . The quarter doesn't look worn at all but the edges are smooth. But when you run you fingers over the face of the quarter the edges are raised. Was this an error? The edges look too perfect to be sanded down or caused by slot machines. zuriwillis@yahoo.com

Sounds like damage but it could be a Struck Through Grease error.
The edge/collar may have been filled with gunk when struck causing a perfectly smooth edge.
No extra value.
Even a Misaligned Die error is possible but that also has no extra value.
Again with respect, I am sending you a coin error, that within its capacity to be good enough to watch and comment.
For me it is important to know the opinion of someone who likes monedas.En errors in Mexico few have this hobby.
I hope you have patience to follow tolerating, Thanks.

This one looks like a Filled with Grease error or a Misaligned Die error. It causes the false doubling.
These are about $0.50 or less.
I send a coin "One Cent 1944" in which I would like your opinion on the "T" in "STATES". In my opinion are different unlike other.

watching closely.
There is doubling around the B in LIBERTY and also in the back. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST has some also.
They all look like Machine Doubling and are not listed in any error site.
Still the B in LIBERTY looks very clear as doubling, this may be a real error.
Quater dolar 1941
Obverse: On the date is observed on the right side of numero 1 "S" inclined or a number "9".
In the number "4" shows that was manipulated because the lines are much more than normal.

I found a quarter dated 1989. It looks like an oreo cookie from the side with the middle layer slightly smaller then the two outside layers. The whole quarter is ever so slightly smaller than the other quarters. The inside layer has ridges but the outside layers not so much. It is in circulated condition.

Sounds like damage anything that make a coin smaller is likely damage due to outside forces. True errors are generally the same size or larger.
One Dime 1942/1941 Error.
Front: This coin was doubled in numbers and letters shown in the date. Error is clearly seen in the date, a number 1 under 2 (gray with golden color). Clearly error in the neck.

This currency consider only the error.
I would appreciate if revised.

Sounds like and Off-Center Strike error it hold little extra value unless part of the design is missing.
So maybe $5.00 on eBay if ungraded.
