2015-D Homestead Quarter

The Denver version of the Homestead quarter. Took a while to find one especially since a change of jobs means no more easy coin finds.

Bag damage on the front where Washington's wig meets his neck. Bag damage refers to the time after a coin is minted and it gets dumped into carts, crates, and bags to get shipped. This damage is unwanted but for circulating coins does not affect value even on rare pieces.

Damage made outside the mint of by accident does lower value. Bag damage is part of the process but ideally you want a circulating coin to not have any for maximum value and appeal.

2013-D Great Basin Quarter

Took a while to get the Denver version of this common America the Beautiful quarter but that is because I am on the far east coast.

More of the Denver version of this coin was minted mainly because there was more demand for it. The western portion of America has a largely population mostly because of California. The largely population uses more coins so when bank on the west side of the country run low on any type of coin they order more from the the closest Federal Reserve which in this case it is the Denver mint.

I may have skipped some steps on how local banks get new money from mints but it basically is there.

2011-D Gettysburg Quarter

It took six years to get this Denver version of the Gettysburg coin in my change and still it is worth just a quarter.

Gettysburg is more than a great speech it is the site that saw the pro-slavery south meet their defeat at the hands of the pro-land north. General Lee, not the cool car, started strong but July 4th was running away after a huge loss of cavalry.

The statue is that of the 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry Monument found on High Water Mark at Cemetery Ridge. The High Water Mark is the deepest the Confederate forces went that day of the battle.

2012-D Chaco Culture Quarter

Chaco Culture National Historical Park is in New Mexico. It is a historical site once used by Puebloan Indians about 1,200 years ago.

On the reverse is the Chetro Ketl complex which has two kivas. Kivas are ceremonial buildings. The were completely enclosed but over time they collapsed leaving a round outline. Everything built seemed to be aligned to the stars and seasons so many think this was a worship site not necessarily a place where people lived all year long.

2011-P Vicksburg Quarter

Vicksburg National Military Park quarter honors the battle to defend Vicksburg which led to the sinking of the U.S.S. Cairo. The site is a military park that has exhibits, monuments, a national cemetery, and replicas.

Pictured is the U.S.S. Cairo on the Yazoo river. The warship was destroyed by a torpedo that launched electronically mark a new type of naval warfare.

2014-P Everglades Quarter

This quarter honors the Everglades which is a huge watery national park that is currently losing its water. The thick luscious wetlands that was the Everglades is slowing shrinking and burning away. Projects to save it are currently underway. 

Instead of using rare Floridian animals they chose the more common roseate spoonbill and anhinga birds. The mix of water and plants are also seen in the background.

2014-P Great Sand Dunes Quarter

This is not a repeat from yesterday it is the Philly version of the Great Sand Dunes quarter. Of the two quarters this is the less common, although both are common, I found them on the same day.

I have been getting a lot of quarters lately, mostly because I stop paying with exact change.These quarters still have no extra value but collecting them is getting more difficult because there are so many.

2014-D Great Sand Dunes Quarter

I never heard of the Great Sand Dunes National Park before finding this quarter. Apparently this Colorado park has huge sand dunes, wetlands, tundra, and more typical park sites. Sandboarding is a thing and I assume it is huge there.

On the reverse is a father and son enjoying water and sand. In the background are the sand dunes and a mountain behind them.

2015-P Homestead Quarter

First 2015 coin. The 2015-P Homestead quarter is the first of the American the Beautiful series for this year. Released on February 9, 2015 it took almost two months before I found one in my change from a local fast food joint, cannot remember which one.

The Heritage Center in the Homestead National Monument of America of Nebraska is dedicated to honor the Homestead Act of 1862. That Act allowed certain people get land for free. The design features a period home, a pump for water, and grains.

2014-D Arches Quarter

Found the Philly version of this coin within a few weeks of its initial release. The Denver version took me half a year and this is the more common mint mark.

Both mint marks had large productions so they will likely never be rare or valuable from circulation. I honestly do not know what the newer quarters look like so I have not found any. So many have been made since the first state quarters in 1999 that I can no longer keep up with the latest designs.

2013-D Mount Rushmore Quarter

I have yet to find a full year's worth of America the Beautiful National Parks Quarters. Ignoring the S mint marks there are five P and five D mintmarks to look for each year. Seven of the possible ten for 2013 is the closest I got to finish a year.

Currently it is snowing on Mount Rushmore and frozen across most of America. I expect no change in change finds around here. Most travelers are from Europe and slowdowns are rare in NYC so circulating cash is always at high levels.

2014-D Shenandoah Quarter

Six months after its launch I finally got a Denver version of the Shenandoah Quarter. Got the Philly version back in May so I am done with this Park if you do not count any San Francisco minted quarters.

Not bad for a new quarter, it usually takes a year or two to find one. Next up is the Grans Dunes which is already out. The Everglades National Park is being launched in November so that is another great one to look for before the year ends.

2010-D Yosemite Quarter

Four years after first being minted and it looks better than the Philly Yosemite quarter I found back then.

Great design on the Yosemite quarter. You have the huge granite rock rock known as El Capitan, the forest around it, and a fallen tree. The design makes me feel that I am looking at an ancient place.

2012-D Hawai'i Volcanoes Quarter

Just a week after finding the Pennsylvanian version of this quarter I now found the Denver one.  Even though the Denver version is more common it is almost always a later find. Still both are pretty common and you can find them for free too.

It seems rather appropriate that after the 4th of July we have are showing a coin that has natural explosions or maybe it was just coincidental.

I always forget that since the Denver Mint serves California that it needs more coins because of there larger populations. The first 4 to 6 months of coin production is estimated and then usually a call for more circulating coins comes pushing the last 3 quarters in the America the Beautiful series to higher numbers. At the end the quantities for both mints end up near even for all coins in total.

2014-P Arches Quarter

Found this one on June 28 less than 20 days after its official release on June 9, 2014. It features Arches National Park in Utah. On the front is Delicate Arch, a 65-foot natural arch that is among 2,000 other as well as other great rock formations.

The Arches National Park quarter is the third one this year like the others they seem to be circulating well and in greater quantities. While making a quarter dedicated to rocks seems silly the actual park is colorful and one the most photographic and filmed places in America.

2013-P Perry's Victory Quarter

Over a year after finding the Denver version of this coin I finally get the Philly one. Neither is one was made in low numbers but the Philadelphia version was minted in a slightly lower quantity.

These last few change finds have all been from local grocery stores and not my usual city lunch time finds. The 2013 national park quarters have 10 circulating coins and I am just 4 away from completing the set. It is the closest I got from any of these quarters. The low mintage of the first three years makes them tough to find.

2012-P Hawai'i Volcanoes Quarter

Yes it is Hawai'i not Hawaii. I especially love people over pronouncing it on TV and movies. Back to one of the coolest quarters of the America the Beautiful series. It has a volcano erupting and should be colorized for maximum effect.

The famed Kilauea Volcano is on the back erupting from its eastern rift. The coin has a great shower of lava in form of dots and rivers of lava coming down the slopes that would brilliant in person.

2014-P Shenandoah Quarter

This quarter was launched on April 4 and released en masse on April 7 and I found one in my change on April 30. That is another quick pick up and strong circulation for a modern coin.

I only know about Shenandoah the movie with James Stewart but apparently it is also a park outside of D.C. The Shenandoah National Park was established in 1935 and was desegregated by the 1950s. The park is famous for its Skyline drive which is a road along the mountain ridge. Fall leaf watchers go there watch the amazing scenes from atop.

The quarter has a hiker looking from Little Stony Man summit with views of the mountain ridges and the road.

2013-P Mount Rushmore Quarter

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is in South Dakota and was conceived as a tourist trap. There many controversies, myths, and stories surrounding Mt. Rushmore but at the end it is just another tourist site.

The coin depicts the years it took carving the Six Grandfathers, (original Lakota name) mountain into the place to remember the founding fathers. Of course the original design was modified because of cracks in the rock. Plus they were meant to have bodies but that never happened due to lack of funding during WW II.

Although Mt. Rushmore is now a symbol of America and very popular it is one of the national sites that I do not have on my list to see. If I see it it will probably be spectacular but not as great as the other side that is still natural.

2011-D Glacier Quarter

Glacier National Park was known for two things its glaciers and mountains goats. Currently most of the 150 glaciers are disappearing or already gone. Thanks to large predators keeping nature in balance the goats are still common.

This coin is a bit hazy especially for only being three years old. Even with the slightly lower mintage it has no extra value.
