2000 Ecuador 5 Centavos

The last of the Ecuadorian coins I found last year. They seem to be common and circulating well. They made 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 centavos coins and luckily I have found one of each. There are other newer years than 2000 but those are harder to find.

On the coin is Juan Montalvo an author and champion of Ecuadorian democracy. He was exiled to France after critiquing some political leaders in Ecuador. He died out of country but after his death he was honored and remembered as a national hero.

2000 Ecuador 50 Centavos

I think I found every 2000 Ecuadorian coin in my change this year. Like my great readers have pointed out this was a one time run while they made U.S. coins and currency the standard for all of Ecuador.

Eloy Alfaro is on the coin he was Ecuador's first president. The coin is simple and virtually identical in size and weight as a U.S. half dollar. While they continued to make some of the smaller denominations this half seems like a one time minting. No mintage figures have been found.

2000 Ecuador 1 Centavo

Like I said a few days ago the Ecuadorians use U.S. money but still issue a few coins for circulation. Most were minted once in 2000 but this cent was minted several  different years. This is the first year of issue and I assume the most common.

I do like the back map on the back it has the Americas all the way from Canada to Chile. It says Republic Del Ecuador, Luz De America or Republic of Ecuador, Light of America. Not a truthful statement but sounds nice.

2000 Ecuador 10 Centavos

Not the first time I found this coin and there seems to be only one type with one year. Ecuador made U.S. currency legal so they have two currencies in circulation. This makes coin production a low priority.

As far as I can tell they only made one diez (10) centavos coin and it was dated 2000. They put Eugenio Espejo or Eugene Mirror if you like translating names. He was a scientist and writer and helped usher Ecuador into a more modern world.

"Just to clear things, they don't use 2 currencies. The only currency is the US dollar. It's just at first they made their own version of the coins because transporting american dollar coins is expensive and takes time."

1983 Ecuador 20 Sucres Note

Have an Ecuadorian note and want to know its value?

This one is a bit tricky for dating even though it was clearly dated Abril 20 de 1983 (April 20, 1983). Technically it is from the 1957-1971 series and overlapped with later issues. To add to the confusion Ecuador no longer issues notes or bills of any kind.

Like most new world currency the Ecuadorian sucre was meant to look and feel like U.S. currency. Their government set a fixed exchange rate to tie the sucre to the U.S. dollar in the 1930s. Unfortunately the people who controlled the monetary units kept devaluing the sucre until early in the year 2000 when it fell to 25,000 sucres per 1 U.S. dollar. The leaders of Ecuador announced the end of the sucre notes by September 11, 2000 and the permanent adoption of the U.S. dollar as Ecuador's national currency.

The American influence guided their money and now replaced it. As a whole the last time the average person could exchange sucres into dollars was 2001, there are always exception but it is not worth it unless you had millions of sucres. Ecuador still issues their own sucre coins up to 50 cents.

Ecuadorian coins can be found in change and in coin lots mostly because they often have little value and become obsolete. Designs tends to be simple and dull. Add to that they use steel most often and you have a perfect storm of low collectors value.

José Joaquín de Olmedo y Maruri  is the guy on the front and former President of Ecuador. Apparently he always looks that intense. Still a nice piece from my vault but a bit scratched as most steel coins get when placed in a box filled with coins.

Tropic Winter

Winter is here and the year is almost over so that means more foreign finds. These were not high in quality but they were given at the same time and were unexpected.

 

I think this is my first Ecuadorian find since starting the blog. Although there is a large Ecuadorian community in this area the coins are considered worthless in there country and are not kept or used often. Many young Ecuadorians I have met have never even seen most older coins of their countries. The centavos were devalued and by 2000 they reformed and the centavos got their value back but people were slow to accept the change. The bills were even worse off.
