2013 South Africa 20 Cents, Venda Legend

Got this African coin at the same time I got the last coin. Not in the best shape it has strike damage and is a bit worn. 

Afurika Tshipembe is South Africa in the Venda language. About 2% of the population of South Africa speaks this language but that is enough to make it an official language. There are 11 official languages in all.

On the other side of coin is a King Protea flower which looks as fantastical in person.

2002 South Africa 2 Rand

For a while there during the early 2000s South Africa kept changing their national arms. Not sure why but that made for coin series that only lasted a year like this one. Most are still common.

iNingizimu Afrika - uMzantsi Afrika

Given to me as a quarter in my change I think this coin is one of the few foreign coins that has a decent exchange value. It is about $0.17 but that is closer than most other countries.

2000 South African 1 Rand, Old National Coat of Arms

This was the last year of the the old national arms as the South African introduced the new arms the same year. Both are common and finding either one is still easy.

They changed the arms but the Springbok (deer) and SOLI DEO GLORIA motto remains the same. It is a nickel plated copper coin and that may change since the coin is losing value and metal prices will likely rise again.

1996 South Africa 5 Cents

Found this on the floor in construction zone at work, also found a bunch of American change. Construction areas, renovations, and moving of furniture are great times to search for lost money. Many times foreign coins are tossed in areas like this on purpose.

AFRIKA-DZONGA is South Africa in the Tsonga language and was added in 1996. The other side has a Blue Crane and the value of 5 c. South African coins features native animals and the national coat of arms. They are pretty common and the copper plating is on steel so it will have little value for now.

1989 South Africa 2 Rand

I would prefer a Krugerrand but this worn 2 rand is the highest face value South African coin I own. Although this little coin seems a bit suspicious. It is a bit warped and some design elements are missing. Could it be a fake?
 

It weighs 5.45 grams which is 0.05 grams lighter than normal. Still this is within normal range especially if worn. Would it even be worth faking? It is equivalent to a U.S. quarter even back in 1989 I doubt it had a stronger purchasing power.

The front says SUID-AFRIKA 1989 SOUTH AFRICA and the banner in the arms should read EX UNITATE VIRES. The ALS initials are there.

The back has an impala and 2 RAND but the ALS initials are not there. The bulging back has made the details less than sharp. Poor impala has no eye, it is kind of creepy.

The edge seems like a normal alternating segmented 2 Rand even has a coppery hue to it when angled right. So I am leaning towards real because there is nothing conclusive that it is a fake.

2007 South Africa Rand

The last of the trio of coins given to me by the nice African tourist, it is a shame I never found out which country she was from. This is a South African rand not to be confused with the famed gold Krugerrand, now that would be a great change find. Each rand is about $0.12 in currency exchange value. Compare that to Krugerrands that always have bullion value plus five percent.

African and Middle Eastern coins are among the most difficult to come by casually for me. They are often worth little and they are minted on odd, sometimes unknown, schedules. Still they are very cool to see since they travel so far when they reach these shores.
