1967 Washington Quarter

50th anniversary of the 1967 quarter. Yet after this much time still no extra value, especially since it has been circulated.

This is a clad quarter meaning it has a copper core and a reverse and and obverse layer of copper-nickel mix. From a manufacturing point of view coins should last long enough to survive heavy circulation yet can be made relatively cheaply. Seeing how this 1967 coin has been around for fifty years it was designed correctly.

2013-D Great Basin Quarter

Took a while to get the Denver version of this common America the Beautiful quarter but that is because I am on the far east coast.

More of the Denver version of this coin was minted mainly because there was more demand for it. The western portion of America has a largely population mostly because of California. The largely population uses more coins so when bank on the west side of the country run low on any type of coin they order more from the the closest Federal Reserve which in this case it is the Denver mint.

I may have skipped some steps on how local banks get new money from mints but it basically is there.

2011-D Gettysburg Quarter

It took six years to get this Denver version of the Gettysburg coin in my change and still it is worth just a quarter.

Gettysburg is more than a great speech it is the site that saw the pro-slavery south meet their defeat at the hands of the pro-land north. General Lee, not the cool car, started strong but July 4th was running away after a huge loss of cavalry.

The statue is that of the 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry Monument found on High Water Mark at Cemetery Ridge. The High Water Mark is the deepest the Confederate forces went that day of the battle.

1965 Washington Quarter

The first clad quarter.
Issued at a time when mint marks were not used.
The most common quarter with over 1.8 billion made.

If you recall I am trying to collect every unique coin I come across. I only post newer ones or those from the U.S. that are 50 years or older.

By 1964 they stopped issuing circulating silver coins. 1965 was the first of circulating clad coins. Clad is when they cover one metal with another. These coins have a pure copper core and it is bonded to a 75% copper - 25% nickel outer layer on both sides. The guy who invented this clad process eventually went on to found All-Clad cookware which I also use.

Despite small outrage that only precious metal was real money most people accepted the money. Now that even these metals are going up in value the false outrage about changing it to a cheaper metal has begun.

2012-D Chaco Culture Quarter

Chaco Culture National Historical Park is in New Mexico. It is a historical site once used by Puebloan Indians about 1,200 years ago.

On the reverse is the Chetro Ketl complex which has two kivas. Kivas are ceremonial buildings. The were completely enclosed but over time they collapsed leaving a round outline. Everything built seemed to be aligned to the stars and seasons so many think this was a worship site not necessarily a place where people lived all year long.

2011-P Vicksburg Quarter

Vicksburg National Military Park quarter honors the battle to defend Vicksburg which led to the sinking of the U.S.S. Cairo. The site is a military park that has exhibits, monuments, a national cemetery, and replicas.

Pictured is the U.S.S. Cairo on the Yazoo river. The warship was destroyed by a torpedo that launched electronically mark a new type of naval warfare.

2014-P Everglades Quarter

This quarter honors the Everglades which is a huge watery national park that is currently losing its water. The thick luscious wetlands that was the Everglades is slowing shrinking and burning away. Projects to save it are currently underway. 

Instead of using rare Floridian animals they chose the more common roseate spoonbill and anhinga birds. The mix of water and plants are also seen in the background.

1999-P New Jersey Quarter

It seems like yesterday that I was waiting for the first state quarters but it has been 16 years. I am not actively pulling them from my change but occasionally I do keep one or two.

Maybe if this summer gets slow I will try and get all 1000 state quarters that are officially circulating. Well not all 100 since I have posted about 9 so far. Just 91 more to go.

2014-P Great Sand Dunes Quarter

This is not a repeat from yesterday it is the Philly version of the Great Sand Dunes quarter. Of the two quarters this is the less common, although both are common, I found them on the same day.

I have been getting a lot of quarters lately, mostly because I stop paying with exact change.These quarters still have no extra value but collecting them is getting more difficult because there are so many.

2014-D Great Sand Dunes Quarter

I never heard of the Great Sand Dunes National Park before finding this quarter. Apparently this Colorado park has huge sand dunes, wetlands, tundra, and more typical park sites. Sandboarding is a thing and I assume it is huge there.

On the reverse is a father and son enjoying water and sand. In the background are the sand dunes and a mountain behind them.

2015-P Homestead Quarter

First 2015 coin. The 2015-P Homestead quarter is the first of the American the Beautiful series for this year. Released on February 9, 2015 it took almost two months before I found one in my change from a local fast food joint, cannot remember which one.

The Heritage Center in the Homestead National Monument of America of Nebraska is dedicated to honor the Homestead Act of 1862. That Act allowed certain people get land for free. The design features a period home, a pump for water, and grains.

2009-D Northern Mariana Islands Quarter

The Northern Mariana Islands are a commonwealth of the United States. They were honored with the last of the Territorial quarters back in 2009. Their six thousand year history is typical of remote island that encounters the western world.

On the quarter is the limestone latte used as the foundation for native housing. There is a canoe used by Carolinians, which were a group of local transported to the island after the natives died off. Flora and fauna include two white fairy terns and a Carolinian head lei with native plants.

The history of Northern Mariana Islands started with Asians making what is thought to be the longest canoe journey to an uninhabited island. Then 5,000 years later Spaniards landed claimed the island and sneezed. Most natives died and the Spaniards transported nearby Caroline Islands native to repopulate. After being turned over to Germany and taken by the Japanese eventually the U.S. occupied and made them a commonwealth.

Gold-Plated State Quarters

Plated coins fact.

• These are not made by the government.
• These have no extra value.
• Whatever gold is plating is on the coin is too small to have value and cannot be removed.

So how much gold is on these coins? Well about two cents or less per coin assuming it was 24 karat gold. They use electroplating which layers one atom layer at a time on the surface. It may be a few microns thick and so tightly bonded that taking it off is nearly impossible. Working one hour at a fast food joint would get you more money and free fries.

 

 

 

Statehood quarters were layered in platinum, silver, gold, and many types of materials as a novelty to amateur collectors. Statehood quarters were so new for U.S. coins that many companies tried to exploit the small frenzy and falsely claimed these were investment coins.

Collecting is an opinion. You should collect what you like but there are collecting communities who set guidelines. For coins the main limit is that a coin is collectible if it is issued by a government and any changes made outside the mint is considered Post Mint Damage (PMD).

1999-D New Jersey Quarter

Occasionally I miss a new coin that comes out or I misplace it. Looking over my state quarter collection I noticed I was missing the 1999 Denver version of the New Jersey quarter. It took a while to find another in my change but here it is, ignore the low grade I will upgrade if I can.

Perfect coin for this time of year as it depicts Washington crossing the Delaware River on December 25-26, 1776. Of course this is an image based n the famous painting and probably inaccurate. I mean who would stand on a small boat during a storm.

The people on the boat are meant to be a cross section of Americans and may secretly include a Scottish man, a man of African descent, and a woman in disguise among others.

2014-D Arches Quarter

Found the Philly version of this coin within a few weeks of its initial release. The Denver version took me half a year and this is the more common mint mark.

Both mint marks had large productions so they will likely never be rare or valuable from circulation. I honestly do not know what the newer quarters look like so I have not found any. So many have been made since the first state quarters in 1999 that I can no longer keep up with the latest designs.

2013-D Mount Rushmore Quarter

I have yet to find a full year's worth of America the Beautiful National Parks Quarters. Ignoring the S mint marks there are five P and five D mintmarks to look for each year. Seven of the possible ten for 2013 is the closest I got to finish a year.

Currently it is snowing on Mount Rushmore and frozen across most of America. I expect no change in change finds around here. Most travelers are from Europe and slowdowns are rare in NYC so circulating cash is always at high levels.

2009-P Guam Quarter

Even I admit that trying to find every coin ever made in my change can be overwhelming. I try and keep track of all them but many slip by. Most of the territorial quarters made in 2009 are some that I did not find. Finally I got one that escaped my grasp.

On the quarter is a relief map of Guam. It has a hand carved boat and a stone base for native homes. The natives known as the Chamorro have their language as the motto. Guahan I Tanó ManChamorro, which means Guam - Land of the Chamorro.

2014-D Shenandoah Quarter

Six months after its launch I finally got a Denver version of the Shenandoah Quarter. Got the Philly version back in May so I am done with this Park if you do not count any San Francisco minted quarters.

Not bad for a new quarter, it usually takes a year or two to find one. Next up is the Grans Dunes which is already out. The Everglades National Park is being launched in November so that is another great one to look for before the year ends.

2010-D Yosemite Quarter

Four years after first being minted and it looks better than the Philly Yosemite quarter I found back then.

Great design on the Yosemite quarter. You have the huge granite rock rock known as El Capitan, the forest around it, and a fallen tree. The design makes me feel that I am looking at an ancient place.

2012-D Hawai'i Volcanoes Quarter

Just a week after finding the Pennsylvanian version of this quarter I now found the Denver one.  Even though the Denver version is more common it is almost always a later find. Still both are pretty common and you can find them for free too.

It seems rather appropriate that after the 4th of July we have are showing a coin that has natural explosions or maybe it was just coincidental.

I always forget that since the Denver Mint serves California that it needs more coins because of there larger populations. The first 4 to 6 months of coin production is estimated and then usually a call for more circulating coins comes pushing the last 3 quarters in the America the Beautiful series to higher numbers. At the end the quantities for both mints end up near even for all coins in total.
