2000 Barbados Cent

Just three weeks since my last Barbados cent find and here is another. They are nearly identical to U.S. cents in material, size, and weight I can see getting these in your change for a long time to come.

There is still no data about the mintage of any of the 1991-2006 copper-plated zinc cents. Since then they have switched metals to copper-plated steel, still without any mintage figures. The new cents are magnetic and tend not to circulate well in the states since most counting machines will reject them.

2005 Barbados Cent

Told y'all I have been getting a lot of Caribbean coins. The main feature of this coin is the trident. It has two small ones on the front and one large one on the back.

The coat of arms is full of odd and cool images. A pelican, a fish that can hug, a fist with sugarcane, and a banner with pride and industry among other things. The committee meeting to choose the coat arms must have been awesome, imagine what got rejected.

Back to the vaults since I have been sick and unable to use or find money outside. One of the reasons I like this coin is that it is seven sided. Not the most popular shape for a coin but not uncommon. By giving a high denomination coin an odd shape you can keep it small and distinct.

Flying fish above ONE DOLLAR, above the fish are cool stylized clouds, I like small details like that.

Normally these coins would weigh 9.90 grams but between 1988 and 1998 they reduced the weight. At 6.30 grams this thinner coin looks and works the same, just a bit lighter. For some reason they went back to the thicker and heavier planchet in 2000. I can only assume it had to do with metal values.

I thought that I found more Barbados coins but a quick search of my recent records proved otherwise. This is only the second coin from Barbados I found since starting this blog. I guess in my mind I group all the Caribbean coins together.

Still none of these coins are rare but the grouping was odd. I got them in  change from the same place, from a person who knew I collected and graciously set them aside.

Barbados Vacation

I wish. Apparently someone who went there on vacation came back and used a penny from that country in our change.


It is my first Barbados find in years. I usually find Bermuda or Trinidad & Tobago coins although in the distant past I found a few Barbados coins.

This coin is interesting because it was the last bronze 1 Cent coins issued for Barbados starting in 1992 the switched to copper-plated zinc. The obverse(front) has a the Neptune symbolic trident over the value. The reverse has the Barbados National Arms that divide the date.
