2008 Panama 1/4 Balboa

As far as I can tell this is the last 1/4 Balboa from Panama. Only four years were minted in the series from 1996-2008.

This one has environmental damage. It looks like it got wet and has spots and verdigris damage that is permanent.

There also several commemorative coins for 2008 but those seem to be more difficult to find.

2001 Panama 1/10 Balboa

Un Decimo means one dime and just like a U.S. dime this one is a clad coin. If I am correct this one was minted in Canada and was only one of three decimos since 1996.

1996, 2001, and 2008 were the only years minted recently. Panama has a long issue with stable governments and because of that their coins are affected. Most of their circulating coins are composition and size copy of American coins. This makes it seem that they are more stable by copying a more stable country.

With little use for small change because of inflation and the growing stability of the euro expect future Panamanian coins to look more European. The already issued 1 and 2 balboa coins that are bi-metallic.

1993 Panama 1/4 Balboa

Basically a quarter, the Balboa is the official currency and everything is a fraction of it. So Un Cuatro is the same as One Forth. I have found several in my change and there is a rumor that they were able to fool certain vending machines back in the day. Of course I never tested this but now that is gone since machines are much more sophisticated.

On the obverse is the National Coat of Arms under the REPVPLICA - DE - PANAMA along with nine stars and wreath around the 1993 date,

The reverse has VN CVARTO DE BALBOA and the armored bust of Balboa. Notice they used the old fashioned V for U. This is a style choice and not a mistake or error.

So far this has been my only change find for December. Apparently gift cards and debit cards will be the down fall of this blog. Well at least I still have a box full of old coins to share.

The ninth Panamanian coin I found most of them are common. All modern coins from Panama are a fraction of the Balboa. So this one is 1/100th of a Balboa.

Two weeks left in the year and if all I find is more Panamanian coins I am fine with that. Still there is one foreign coin I need to make my yearly list complete but let me not speak of it until the year is over.

1996 Panama Dime

Maybe it is not technically a dime but close enough.

Un decimo de Balboa is also better translated to One Tenth of a Balboa.

Only my second Panama find since I started this blog. Apparently last time I did not even write about. It was a 1982 Un decimo de Balboa. Nothing to special about 1/10 Balboas but there gaps between minting years. They go from 1985 to 1996 to 2001. I guess they are not that popular.

On the obverse is the national coat of arms under the REPUBLIC DE PANAMA and above the date.
On the reverse is an armored bust of Vasco Núñez de Balboa facing left VN DECIMO DE BALBOA around.

I always find it weird when the bust side of the coin is not the head.
