1993 Ireland 5 Pence (Pingin)

Now this is a real Irish coin, not some Euro cover. Pre-Euro coins are still floating around in change because billions were made and are still considered common. They have low value and will continue to for many years.

The front has the harp with designs on it that is till used on modern Irish euros. The metal is copper-nickel which gives it some value over face.

The reverse features a bull over the 5P which is 5 pence or pingin in Irish. Previous versions has the bull facing right and the coin itself was larger. It was reduced by 1993 to save on metal costs but they did not issue the coin every year only when circulating coins were running out.

2008 Ireland 1 Euro Cent

Irish euro cents are the smallest change I find lately. Smaller than the average cent it is also copper plated steel so it will have a low value for years.

Coins from Ireland have always been tough to find in my American change. Irish tourist do come around but they tend to use cards or travelers checks. Since this coin was made in 2008 they have reduced production. The cost of things and the use of electronic transaction is making Irish coins less important for daily life.

2002 Ireland 20 Euro Cent

The most common Euro coins will most likely always be from 2002 and this Irish 20 euro cent is no different. It is common and has the same design as every other Irish euro coin.

The harp design and éire Irish name for Ireland has been used on coins for a long time. I think this coin has the most simple design among all the original euro coins.

2002 Ireland 10 Euro Cents

Although I have talked a little about this one back when I found it in 2009 it deserves its own post. Mainly because Ireland imposed some strict austerity measures and just as they are starting to economically recover the Euro may crash and burn.

For those not in the loop coin-wise Greece may refuse to place an extreme austerity measure and then vote to leave the Euro Zone dropping the Euro coins and currency by default. If Greece drops the Euro then Spain may be force to do the same since they are also prideful and in trouble. After that Ireland is next in this domino toppling of the Euro.

Germany and France will hold strong to the Euro as well as the smaller Slovakia and Slovenia. In all there are fourteen Euro producing countries and five more official Euro users. Plus many countries are Euro-dependent. Still it is possible for the Euro to cease majority or even complete production.

That said as a collector it would be neat to see the end of the Euro and either the start of a new system or the reintroduction of the old currency. Like other European coins that went obsolete the value probably will double but since they were common the are still worth little.

On this Thanksgiving I'm thankful for family and friends and this wee rest period before finals.

Still busy, still trying to post more consistently, and still trying to make change as much as possible.

A Canadian and American nickel and dime from Ireland, 10 Euro cents if you want to be precise.

To make this boring shot more lively I tried to use the scanners enhancement features. I think they got overexposed. Not much of problem as many homes on turkey day will deal with overcooked items.

Again nothing too special about each coin...serious deja vu.

I'm trying to post the coins I find or buy faster so with that in mind I found this Irish Euro coin in my change two days ago and don't want to leave it wandering on my desk for months.

Ireland (Eire) has been using Euros since 2002 and each year they mint less and less. Take the 2 Euro cent in 2002 the made 354,643,386 by 2006 they only made 26,628,597 which is a big drop.
Note the 2009 Standard Catalog of World Coins 2001-Date has a 2005 mintage of 72,600. This is completely wrong someone left out the extra numbers.

The coins edge has a smooth edge with a groove, I couldn't get a good picture so here is an image from the great and awful Wikipedia.

I got the biggest three from Hodgepodge and the other two were found in change. Recently I've been finding more foreign coins then U.S. coins. I did find a 1946 penny and some modern state quarters and new nickels but nothing in good shape or special.
