2002 Italy 10 Euro Cent

There are three varieties of this coin with different sizes for the designers initials on the front. I only own one and cannot find information on the other two so I cannot say what the true difference looks like.

As far as I know the varieties all have the same value. I guess with over a billion made they are common. The first of Italian euro coins it was made in huge amounts. I am guessing the dies were repunched several times resulting in varieties.

2008 Italy Euro Cent

Featuring the Castel del Monte this Italian euro cent continues the use of historical architectural sites on euro coins. The Castel del Monte was built around 1240 and was not quite defense ready but used for different things over the last 800 years.
 

I like how the 5 euro cent is twice as big as the euro cent yet I still get both in my change as a penny. I guees to some people all copper coins are the same.

As the year draws to a close I am still finding funny money in my change. Meanwhile Europe is still struggling with the global economic crisis and Italy has the duel issue of a large economy but also large debt. None of the Euro countries will seriously do away with Euro money but they keep it as a back pocket threat.

 

Notice something odd about the mint mark? Could it be repunched?

The mint mark for Italian coins is the R for Rome. It has been on coins for many year and tends to be ignored since it is usually the only mint mark used.

Repunched mintmark (RPM) means that the die had a faded or weak mint mark and they needed to strengthen or redo it. Done right and you would not notice. The coin would just look sharper and more detailed. Sometimes the new mint mark is slightly off and a doubling occurs. The more off its original mark the more value.

Then again the mintmark is slightly flat and it could be simple hub doubling. I cannot honestly tell the difference in this case and I have no other Euro RPM coins to check against. Opinions or links are welcomed in solving this mini mystery.

2005 Italy 2 Euro Cent

Found two Italian euros which is a good sign for the euro because they are starting to travel out of country. Yesterday the euro hit a seven week high based on Italy and Spain possible lowering of their borrowing cost. Yeah I know more speculating and less real life feedback.

The building is the tower of Turin, famous for something. The edge is listed as plain but it is a security edge that has a little trench or incuse all around. It also helps to distinguish it from the one euro cent which has the true plain edge.

So she is looking in her purse for change. I said do not worry I got some. She insists because she has to clean out her purse anyway. Then she finds this Italian one Euro cent and said she kept it for some reason but forgot why then of course I said it cannot be lucky or special and I should have it. Well thanks to my form of logic I got a new Euro.

This has been a weird week for coin finds but who am I to complain. These coins are more or less useless in Europe because of there small value. With all the new austerity measures in the Euro zone I wonder will these make a comeback or die off completely.

2002 Italy 50 Euro Cents

As Italy talks earthquakes, eurobonds, and other disasters we can reflect on the first fifty euro cent they made. Like other 2002 Euros this is the most common of its type. Made in the billions they quickly dropped to less then five million a year by 2004. Look I am not saying the Euro is dead but gravely ill is not a stretch.

Almost a year to the day I found my last Italian euro find. This one was found on the floor in front of a Coinstar machine. Apparently many people tried to pass it through until someone got so upset they threw it on the ground with furious anger. I may have exaggerated the details for effect.

The third most common euro coin behind the Italian 20 Cents and 1 Cent coins of the same year. I guess Italy wanted to go all in when they switched to euros. Recently I have read no one uses the 1, 2, or 5 euros cents much in Europe so it is getting rejected everywhere.

Notice a dark blob on the coin. Again this is guess but I think it is ink. People often carry pens and coins in the same place so it could possibly be a leaky pen. This is a case where pure acetone wold help since it is a low value coin it may be worth the experiment one day.

Italian Euro Cent

This little Euro is one of several I found over a month ago then the finds stopped. Not sure what happened but it seems that my area has exhausted the current "funny money" supply. Starting in December the tourist will swarm the city and start leaving more impressive coins...I hope.

Still this little Euro is nice and I will stretch the few finds I have over the next weeks.

 

This is the second most common of all Euro coins with a mintage over 1.3 billion. The obverse has the Castle del Monte, a famed 13th century castle on top of a mountain. The small R is for the Rome mint and the small E over D is for Eugenio Drutti the designer of the obverse.

The reverse has the value and the typical Euro design created by Luc Luycx with his initials next to the globe.

A Slice of Sicilian

I got this coin and it's my first non-English ancient coin, thanks Kiefer. Here is a quick scan because my photo skills gets worse each day.

The top image is of a cross pattée with pellets at end of each serif and the edge has written, +•SICILIE•.

The bottom image is of the letter M and the edge has written, +•AyNFR’REX.


I'm not that familiar with coins that are 750 years old but I've been trying. I got a Spinks book for my English coins but nothing for this Sicilian type. I know that it's about 16mm and 0.61 grams.

This is a Mandfredi type because Manfred was crowned the ruler of the kingdom of Sicily on August 11, 1258 and died in battle on February 26, 1266.

They are more proof that I anything can be found on your change. Although the trend lately has been much more foreign coins then old U.S.A. coins. It has been quite a while since I've added anything good to my U.S. collection from my change alone.

Those were back in November and then yesterday I found a 1942 Canadian Cent in my change at Starbucks.

I said a few months back that I was starting to find more foreign coins then old U.S. coins. It has come to the point that I haven't found an old U.S. coin in months. I am also finding stranger and higher denomination foriegn coins, not just pennies but 20 cent, dollars and stuff with 250 on them.
