1999-D Susan B. Anthony Dollar

With this 1999-D dollar I finally found all the Susan B. Anthony dollars that were issued for circulation, including the wide and narrow rim varieties. All were change finds so I just got them for face value.

1999 dollar coin were issued in response to a shortage of coins for vending machines that became to expensive to use small change and accepted bills larger than a dollar.  Golden dollars were set to be issued but that was still a year away. Pressure from cities like New York City forced the Federal Reserve to empty their vaults of dollar coins and a quick reissue of the Susan B. Anthony dollars.

It took me 15 years to find this one because less than 12 million were made. They are the least common circulating Susan B. Anthony dollars, of course the 1981 series had less but they were not issued for circulation.

To meet the demands of vending machines throughout America but in particular New York City the government authorized a one year minting of the Susan B. Anthony dollar.

Just like the version issued twenty years earlier these dollars have Susan B. Anthony on the front and an eagle, the moon, and the Earth-rise.

Despite never being popular they are still used daily in cities with transit vending machines. Oddly enough you can get a dozen of these as change in a Metrocard machine but try to use them in a store above most subway stations and you may get a dirty look or even a rejection. The Anthony dollars in particular with there quarter size tends to give cashiers problems.

The more boring of the 1979-P dollar coins but it has been a while since I found any Susan B. Anthonys I might as well post it. Now that I have gone all electronic paycheck I have less change coming through.

 

Kind of scratchy and dull. Not much else to say.

I found these in my change a while ago and only now have I had enough time to post about them.

Obverse and reverse.

Nothing particularly grand but still something nice to find. Most are Canadian but I did find some older American coins. I also found two star notes, a one dollar note and a twenty dollar note but neither were rare. The Susan B. Anthony dollar was from my change but I believe I used, I can't find it.

The difference with a 2003P and a 2003 is core used to apply the plating. A 2003 was a copper plated zinc coin while the 2003P was a copper plated steel coin. As a result all Canadian coins with a P should be magnetic

Dollar coins are not rare to come across, vending machines are good for spitting out Susan B. Anthonys or Sacagaweas especially. I watched a C-Span report with Henrietta Holsman Fore the 37th Director of the United States Mint talking of the "failure" of the golden dollar and she defended it by pointing out that New York City was so desperate for dollar coins for subway vending machines that the mint had to send them rat feces covered coins that sat in old vaults since the 1980's.
So while not popular they do have a demand. From one of those subway machines I've found almost all circulating small dollars.

The picture above has 1979P,D,S & 1980P,D,S & 1999P & 2000P & 2001P.

I'm missing 1999D, 2000D & 2001D.

You may notice two 1979P dollars one is a narrow rim and the other wide rim. Basically wide rim has the rim nearly touching the date while narrow rim has the rim far from the date.

Note that the metal content for the Sacagaweas dollars are for outer layers only that are bonded to an inner layer of pure copper. This is a more accurate metal content; 88.5% Copper, 6% Zinc, 3.5% Manganese, and 2% Nickel.

Other small dollar coins were issued but not released for circulation instead they were sold as collectors items or released in limited quantities. If you suspect you have one of these not listed just leave a comment/question and I'll do my best to figure it out. A note for the "Golden" dollar they don't stay golden for long and a real ugly example is not worth anything except face value.
