New Historical Figures on U.S. Cash

Some quick coin and currency news.

First New Hampshire senators have proposed a bill to make a commemorative coin featuring Astronaut/Teacher Christa McAuliffe who died in 1986 on the space shuttle Challenger. Proceeds for the sale would support Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) causes.

Second there are changes coming to the $20, $10, and $5 bills. Notable the addition to Harriet Tubman to the front of the $20 bill and moving Andrew Jackson to the back.

On the $10 bill the back will feature Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Coffin Mott, Alice Paul, and Isabella "Sojourner Truth" Baumfree.

On the back of $5 bill will be Marian Anderson, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

With the exception of Marian Anderson I see these all as great historical figures to ass alongside of the founding fathers. Of course like the founding fathers none of them were perfect but they all made America a greater country.

Nothing against Marian Anderson but I think it sets a precedent for entertainers to be on regular currency. it then becomes a popularity contest.

There is less and less money to find and here are some reasons why. Old coins are being smashed, new coins are virtual, and my finds are headed towards the vault.

The art of Coin Craft is just some artist smashing a few dollars of silver coin into tools then selling them for thousands. The tragic coin loss is part of the final cost.

Read this great article in New York Magazine and here is the less glossy version called A Fistful of Lindens. It explores alternate currencies including local money like Berkshares, time exchange like Ithaca Hours, and video game money like Linden Dollars.

Found a 2013-D Perry quarter that will never circulate again because I will hold on to it forever.

What is it worth? What could it be worth? And did I just get scammed? The trio of links this week will have you thinking about cash for now and hopefully for the future.

Scotland will decide what national currency to adopt. Will it be the Euro? Maybe a Sterling? Or the tried and true Scot-Dollar?

That famed 1913 nickel was sold for over $3 million and will stay in the United States.

I got slugged for a quarter.

A nice summary of past and future coins this week. The Bitcoin is just getting started while the lonely pound is 30 years old.

PC Mag has a nice summary about Bitcoins except a proper explanation of how this e-currency is made. 

The British pound coin marks 30 years of a solo career after replacing the pound note in April of 1983.

I had nothing that new or old so I just wrote about the $5 bill from 1995.

Coin mistakes abound and even I made one. No pictures today because of my silly mistake.

A limited edition coin featuring James Joyce was misquoted and minted. They will give full refunds but that would a waste of an error/variety coin.

Went to Yankees stadium recently.
Passed by the penny squishing machines.
Made a mental note to get some.
Left the stadium and completely forget to get some.

Coin Update has a wonderful article about a new collectors coin from Poland that is oddly thick. More like a tube or cylinder of silver than a typical coin.

Starting April 11, 2013 you can start submitting your design for the new U.S. baseball coin.

British people are saving more small change in jars than in banks. It makes sense when you need to buy milk or anything else small but I think this is normal and having bank accounts for every small purchase is ridiculous.

I found a 2013 cent in 2013!. That was fast seeing how I find less coins everyday.

Quiet week for coin news as this slow spring continues to unfold.

Pocket Change started as a virtual currency and is now more of a reward program. Their app is now on Android and iOS. They are basically giving the virtual currency away through sponsorship as a way to flood the market and make it a real currency.

NGC, the coin grading company, is changing their fees and Coin Update sorts things out.

All I found was a 1960-D nickel making the week extra long and boring.

The St. Patrick Day's week long celebration is just about over and I did not find any pots of gold. Instead we can look elsewhere for some coin related news.

The Federal Reserve has a Flickr account with all photos free for fair use. There is no cash posted just a bunch of people at their jobs.

NYC dog ate $1.11 worth of pennies. The dog was licking bagel crumbs over a box of pennies and ate the pennies. The zinc and the huge amount of coins could have killed the doggie but after emergency procedures he is doing fine. (Note to purist pennies and cents are the same thing.)

A Chinese coin from the 1400s was found in Kenya, Africa. If real and buried at the time this will add to the history of African-Chinese trade. 

I found an Acadia park quarter that reminded me I have not been in the great outdoors.

Trending or more like trendy is making your own coins. Of course coins are redeemable for trades and services but these are more like medals. Here are a few examples recently to hit the country. Also some first and last of kind real coins are also here.

Redondo Beach is having their annual "coin" design contest.

The City of Rocks National Reserve is also making a "coin" for a limited run to celebrate 25 years of rocking on.

Australia is honoring military engineers with a special $1 coin.

The last penny roll from Canada sold for $6,600, that is 13,200 times face value.

I found a Canadian cent and an older U.S. nickel, unfortunately they remain just a few cents above face value.

All events eventually comes back to coins, okay maybe not but the following stories did so read and enjoy.

Sede Vacante or Vacant Seat is the time when there is no Pope, Vatican City issues special coins with this crest. They are allowed to make special Euro coins during this rare time and yes Sede Vacante coins are rare, sell out fast, and are hoarded. 2 Euro coin limited to 125,000, 5 Euro coin limited to 10,000 in silver, and 10 Euro coin limited to 5,000.

The world's least valuable coin is from Uzbekistan, 1 Tiyin is worth 1,999 U.S. cents. Despite that fact most countries want these small change to keep inflation low and help charities.

Libya is slowly replacing their old notes with new ones, lots of change but the lack of Muammar Gaddafi.

New coins, old coins, and current coins are disappearing and reappearing everywhere. Well maybe not everywhere but in certain locations so read on and find out where you get to join in on the fun.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe is minting the first ever Sioux Nation dollar coin and you can help design it. Contest March 15, 2013 so if you are a coin designer I suggest you give it a try.

Passing through Baltimore then stop by the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo, March 14 – 17, 2013 and see one of the famous 1913 Liberty V nickels.

South Africa has stopped minting nickels or 5 cents pieces not because of cost but it seems that the market is flooded with them. As predicted the public and private community is getting stuff confused and is banning, rejecting, and not using them causing other problems.

New at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City is the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Hall and you can buy the souvenir medal too.

Outside the U.S. Egypt is being overwhelmed by people wanting the stable U.S. dollar over other currency because of Egypt's recent political problems. 

Angola is try hard to keep both coins and the new currency, Kwanza notes, without causing a crash.

Coined For Money: Round-Up Feb. 4-10, 2013

Let us see if how the internet is supporting coins. First they link to wonderful articles, then they create coins that will never exist, and finally they created a great infograph that fools you into thinking you are not being cheated.

Coin Update's Roundup has links confirming that the 2013 White Mountain quarter is being minted in higher numbers. They also kindly linked to my recent find and I greatly appreciate it.

Amazon is introducing Amazon Coins which will be 1 Amazon coin to 1 U.S. cent. Only for the app-store but it may join other private virtual currencies that are trying to take over the internet.

The Canadian cent is still legal but so is rounding.
Basically...

• $0.01 and $0.02 gets you $0.00; 
• then $0.03, $0.04 gets you $0.05;
• next $0.06, $0.07 gets you $0.05;
• last $0.08, $0.09 gets you $0.10;

How much you want to bet someone will try to turn in 3 cents for a nickel. What will happen is that all products will be adjusted to end in  $0.01, $0.02, $0.06, and $0.07 this will cost you a few cents but will reap millions to certain large chain stores.

Auctions and donations all start with a few cents and can grow beyond expectation. This week let us see how we can wisely spend some money.

In April that rare 1913 nickel is up for auction, estimates have it at $2 million or more.

A 1794 dollar coin is now the most valuable/expensive coin ever sold. At $10,016,875 it is just out of my price range but congrats to whatever corporation that bought it.

The world is issuing lots of stuff and these are the most interesting items I found this week.

Dr. Who is turning 50 and the New Zealand mint has issued a limited amount of silver legal Island of Niue $2 dollar coins. They are 1 ounce 0.999 fine silver coin limited to 10,000 so nerds be aware. This is one coin that will likely outpace numismatic value due to Doctor Whovians collector value.

The bank of Zambia is successfully withdrawing their old currency for the new one which is just a rebased form of an older currency. Confused well no one in Zambia is because no cases of fraud occurred and tellers are reporting a 50% conversion headed to 90% soon. Not all is well as people are complaining that the new coins are too small and feel less "real".

Coined For Money: Round-Up Jan. 14-20, 2013

Customizable is this week's keyword. I made this blog to talk about the low value coins I often find. Now the world is catching up with ATMs that dispense more than just $20s and popular shows talking about small change. Before all that goodness I made a custom heat map of my world coins finds which I hope to upload for everyone to use, eventually.

Heat map of coins I own, the darker green shows the most and white means none or less than 1% were found.

Heat map not including the U.S. or Canada, the percentages change so more countries are visible. Still Africa has the most gaps.

A Chloropeth map is a shaded map that shows the most and least of stuff. In my case I used Microsoft Excelto alter an existing map with the amount of coins I own.Since the amount of U.S. and Canadian coins are so large it throws off the map so removing them properly shows every country in my collection. A useful visual tool I hope to perfect and share.

Finally the banks are rolling out ATMs that give out $1 and $5 bills and soon will also give out coins. I have been needing this for years and hopefully this will improve my currency finds.

No theme this week just some coin stories I found interesting.

Oh no the new Fiji coins are confusing since they $1 and $2 coins look very similar but when dirty and worn look exactly the same.

A 1792 nickel sells for $1.41 million dollars, do not expect to find this one in your change.

Final words from the U.S. treasury, 'We will not mint a trillion dollar coin'. So enough about that junk already.

New coins are cool. Getting, making, and using these new coins may not be as easy as it sounds. Here are a few stories about new coins to make you think twice.

I tried to avoid this story but it will not die. Here is the best article I could find about the myths surrounding the making of a trillion dollar coin. Basically it is legal, but probably will cause a lawsuit, and it will only temporarily solve the debt ceiling problem.

The new commemorative 1 Dirham coin from United Arab Emirates is being rejected from parking meters in Abu Dhabi, also Dubai reportedly. It is slightly lighter and the machines are not properly updated to accept old and new coins.

A young coin collector is the first to get 2013 coins down in Australia. He camped out for 4 days and also got the last 2012 coins minted.

The power of coins to influence is strong. Still that does not mean printing money will stop anytime soon.

For 2 weeks girls and boys competed to raise money at a school. Coins were collected and counted but any bill would take away from the final total. Clever coin drive with interesting results as the girls raised less but won.

It might cost Canada about $40 million to redeem those cents over the next 6 years. You can multiply that number by at least 100 if you try to do the same for the U.S. cents.

Coin vs Dollar debate round 211: Making coin dollars will bring jobs to America not to mention the delivery and distribution jobs. It also makes it less efficient assuming the price of gas will continue to rise.

New alloys are being tested at the U.S. Mint for future coins.

The world did not end and to celebrate we enjoyed a silver Mexican coin.
