I am looking for information on an 1842 proof penny, caondition unknown & info unknown. Thank You.

Man said...

I got it up and sent you the email hope it helped.

Anonymous said...

Apparently I have one of the "wheat" pennies just as the one you have pictured. The only difference is the year is '1955.' Is this of any real value? either way, I will hold on to it.

Man said...

1955
$0.10 in Very fine
$0.75 in MS-65(near perfect)

Anonymous said...

Could you value the following:
1913, 1936, 1956 wheat penny's, Mr Man?
You mentioned that the 36 was an error year....could you get more detailed?

thank you

Man said...

1913 $0.75 in Good.
1936 $0.10 in Good.
1956 $0.10 in Very Fine.

1936 error consist of a doubling on the date or letters in the front of the penny.

It is most easily seen on the "36" and would look like if the date was stamped twice showing a slight ovelapping. This rare error is seen on Fine or better examples and starts at $55.00.

Thanks for the visit, it's just Man.

You stated that penny errors, are any of these coins worth more than $.01. I have a 1946S Wheat Penny. Is it worth more than $.01? I have several coins I have been collecting for years, but I don't know what they are worth, if anything. I collect them because I like them. I don't even know if they are old enough to be worth anything. How can I find out? Here?

Man said...

Hey freckles,
This blog is just for me to share my finds or purchases and hopefully give a little info.

1946S penny is $0.10 the error 1946S/D is worth at least$25.00.

As for more info try the Red Book by Yeoman, online PCGS.com
There forum and site are great but the prices are too high and not realistic in most cases.

I am curious to find out if a winged 1858 is worth any thing Thanks RS

Man said...

A winged 1858 what?
If you meant cent it starts at $20.00 in good condition(all but date is worn).

Anonymous said...

Why are you saying the wheat penny in 1909 is worth bucks. Brenner didn't start designing pennies with initials on them until 1941. Can you explain that?

Man said...

You obviously did not follow this link 1909
but that's ok basically some 1909 pennies were minted with the initials VDB and are worth hundreds more then a 1909 without VDB on the reverse.

There are 5 versions of the 1909 Lincoln cent and the VDB cents were only made in a short time. A

Is the 1941 wheat penny with initals worth anything? What about indian head pennies from 1901-1907?

Anonymous said...

I was wondering what a collection of morgan silver dollars from 1878-1904 would be worth in today's market? Condition on all are exceptional.

Man said...

1941 cent are only worth $0.15 in fine.
1901-1907 are $2.50 in fine.

An entire 1878-1904 Morgan series in MS-60 start at $10,000 if you have no errors or the 1893S or a few other key dates.

The VAM collecters(a group that collects every tiny variety of Morgans) may pay more.

What is a 1947 lincoln weat penny worth? How would I get the money for the penny?

Man said...

1947 cent is worth about $1.00 in MS-63 = Choice Uncirculated, No trace of wear, slight blemishes some original red color.

The only way you can make money is by having it graded by PCGS or ANACS(it will cost up to $20.00) and if good enough sell it to other collectors on eBay or to a coin shop.

To make a profit you would have to get it graded MS-66 or higher or sell a hundred of them raw.

Personally I bought as little as five raw pennies on eBay from the 1920s for $0.99.

Today while cleaning out some old drawers I came across a 1883 Penny with a woman's head which looks like she is wearing a crown with the other side showing a large V in the middle and latin under the United States of American. How much do you think this coin is worth. My e-mail is lbg50dalla@aol.com

Man said...

1883 nickel latin under the United States of America

It is not a penny it is a nickel it is the Variety 1 1883 Liberty Head Nickel.

Variety 1 has E PLURIBUS UNUM on the reverse while Variety 2 has CENTS. The second variety is worth more.

Your coin is about $8.00 in fine.

Anonymous said...

i have a 1858 penny with a bird (eagle?) on the front looks like a weat is this worth anything Thanks

Man said...

1858 penny

This is known as the Flying Eagle made from 1856-1858.

There many varieties for the 1858 but the average about $24.00 in good(G-4).
In mint state(MS-60) it is about $320.00.

Depending on grade you may have a very special coin.

My son told me to look for 1977 pennies, also I have a 1936 circulated, unclean wheat head.

Man said...

1977 pennies
Are not special and in circulated it is only $0.03 for metal content and just $0.01 for collectors.

1936 circulated, unclean wheat head
About $0.20 there is a Doubled Die Error version that has doubling on the front, worth $50.00, very rare.

I have a penny from 1917. On the obverse side, the edge of the coin is shaped like a dodecagon. I have contacted many experts about this, but all they can say is that it is genuine and it was not modified to be that way. Somebody mentioned something about it being an extremely rare proof. Can you give me some kind of information about this?

Man said...

penny from 1917...dodecagon

Is this an American coin?

If it is US then no certified 1917 proof exist, the die was made but none were known to be pressed.

The edges are supposed to be "squared". Exactly what that means is unknown.

Seeing this coin won't help you may have to pay and submit it to PCGS or another coin grader.
Although the few 1917 proofs they seen they did not certify real or fake.

Allegedly one was in an ANACS holder but I never saw it. A buffalo does exist in ANACS.

Good Luck, this one will be tough.

Anonymous said...

I am 100% sure that the penny is from the United States. The edges look exactly like the edges of the Susan B. Anthony dollar. I made a mistake in the original question. The dodecagon shaped edges are on both sides, not just the obverse.

Man said...

That sounds right but as no picture of this coin exist I can only tell you to try and submit it to PCGS.

If you can get a good picture/scan of it because any other expert online would want to see it.

Also weigh it.

This would be one of the rarest coins ever and the more info you can give out the better. Still no one will give you an answer without holding it.

Anonymous said...

Where can a weigh something as light as a penny? Also, what is the correct weight?

Anonymous said...

On my previous post I ment to say where can I weigh something as light as a penny. Also, the coin is about VF condition.

Man said...

I bought a MY SCALE for that reason but if you have access to a scale that has a x0.01g accuracy. Try a school or lab or anywhere that has science scales and first test a pre-1982 cent then your 1917.

It should weigh 3.11 grams give or take .03 grams.

As for the condition it would usually make it hard to tell that it is a proof but the rim is "squared" so it makes no difference.

Anonymous said...

Is there anything else that I can do to see if it is authentic other than weighing it? I don't have access to a scale of that type, and I don't have credit cards to buy one online.

Man said...

A good picture or scan that can be seen by others online. Unfortunately you found one big problem with very rare coins. It will cost money to verify it. Even if you did get the weight it stills needs to be graded by a certified expert. That can cost up to $50 and take months.

Just hold on to it and keep it safe one day you will find a better solution.

Man said...

I found a copper dime I thought it was an error so I waited about 4 years until I bought the scale.

Finally I weighed it and it was normal, I was about to toss it back into circulation when an error expert said it could be a copper-wash error and the only way to find out is to submit it. I can't afford that yet so I just put it in a 2x2 holder and it is waiting for the day I have both the money and time to submit that coin.

Anonymous said...

Thank you greatly for the information. I contacted a coin grading service about the coin and the told me that it sounds just like the two other known proofs, but they would need to look at it to be sure. They also said that if it is a proof that it is worth about double the other two because of the D mintmark. (The other two don't have a mintmark.) I got an estimated price of what it would cost to grade the coin and it is very expensive!

Man said...

I think the two other proofs were from ANACS but none of the owners placed pictures online. Yeah I should have said at least $50 most likely more.

Good luck, I hope it is real.

Anonymous said...

I had success in getting the coin weighed. I explained the situation to the chemistry professor at the local college and he agreed to let me use his scale. The coin weighed 3.026 grams (+ or - 0.1 grams). The cheapest that I can get the coin graded is about $400. (Well, that is the cheapest that I have found so far.)

Man said...

That is a little light but well within the acceptable limits. Especially if it is VF.

Yes last night I looked up the PCGS fees and an Ultra-Rare coin would cost $500, LINK.

A coin show in your area is the last option you can bring the coin around to many dealers and big grading companies often do free appraisals at these shows.
Florida, California and Illinois are all having big shows soon so you may want to find out which is closet.

Anonymous said...

Do you have any idea when a coin show is going to be in the west Texas, southeastern New Mexico type area?

Man said...

Try here LINK COIN SHOWS

Anonymous said...

Is there any "safe" way to get my coin offically certified and graded? I don't live close enough to any coin service to bring it in personally. I also don't have the money to insure it so that I can mail it to a coin service.

Man said...

The only other way is to wait for a coin show that is big enough that a coin grading company will be there in person.
