It has been quite a few years since I found an American silver coin in my change. I found some Canadian silver dimes plus I bought a few silver coins but since October 2005 I have not found American silver.
That mini drought has ended with the most common of Mercury dimes or Winged Liberty Head if you want to be more accurate. This 1944 piece is from the war years but as with most war year coins it was produced in excess. Most Mercury dimes averaged 35 million minted per year, including all mintmarks. Occasionally they went above 50 million but starting in 1938 as World War II loomed the mint increased production reaching a peak in 1944 with over 250 million. They reached another peak in 1946 but those were in Roosevelt dimes.
Although mistaken for the god Mercury the obverse is actually Lady Liberty with a winged cap to symbolize liberty of thought.
Here's the stats for this dime...
Type/Country: 10 Cents / United States
Year: 1944
Mintage: 231,410,000
Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
Value: $2.66 in F-12 (a metal value of $2.66)

I'm not a collector - but I think I found an error dime. It appears to be a 1987 Copper Dime. Not sure how to tell, it is kind of dirty. It doesn't look to have the usual cladding line on the side of the coin, though.
Thoughts?
error dime. It appears to be a 1987 Copper Dime
You need to weigh it.
If it weighs anything other 2.27 grams it is a true error.
It my also very close to 2.27 grams which may be a Sintered Coin or Copper Wash but that can only be known by experts.
I tried to weight it - could the weight be as low as 2.3g???
I misread your weight. My scale doesn't have enough accuracy to know the true weight. It said 2.3g. No hundredths reading available.
It said 2.3g
The tolerance is + or - 0.09 grams so it is probably a normal coin.
That means the copper color may be due to Sintered Planchet but that can only be found by experts.
Here is an example 50 cent copper
That site is also a good place to email for more questions on grading and authentication.
Is that better or worse for value??
Is that better or worse for value??
Worse. If graded a MS-65 Statehood Quarter a Sintered coin goes for about $400.00 while a missing clad layer goes for $700.00.
Of course dimes are sold for less.
1939 dime like the picture above.
1939 dime
About $1.60 in fine.
i have a 1912 silver winged liberty mercury dime..i cannot find a value on it...all the places i have looked said 1916 was the starting date. Please help me find the value...
sorry...i have a 1939 winged liberty head and a 1912 barber head...my bad...
1939 winged liberty head about $1.50
1912 barber head about $2.50
For others to know the Winged Liberty dime did start in 1916 and could never have a earlier year since the design was not even selected until late 1915. This is true for nearly every coin when they change design.
Hi, I have a 2008 Canadian copper dime. Everything about it is exactly like a normal dime (size, sailboat, says "ten cents" etc..) but it's copper exactly like a penny.
Are errors like this of any value?
Thanks
2008 Canadian copper dime.
It may be an error but it needs to be weighed to see what type of error it is. Generally they start at $500.00 and may go up depending on type.
I have a 1941 dime just like the picture you have. Is it worth anything? Should I hang on to it?
1941 dime just like the picture you have
It is silver so it will always have a metal value.
Currently it is $1.03 in silver value.

gold zach taylor comendertive coin
has no year can't find one like it
The date should be on the edge.
If nothing is on the edge then it is a Missing Edge Lettering error and in circulated condition it's about $50.00.
Yesterday, I found a mercury dime while coin roll hunting. It is a 1916 mercury dime in good condition , but is very badly tarnished. I was wondering how much it's worth and if the tarnish brings the value down. The front is tarnished black and the back is tarnished around the edges. Thanks in advance.

For collectors tarnish is fine it does not affect value as long as it is not cleaned and all the details are still sharp.
It's about $3.00.
I work at a register and i get get a wheat penny or two and good finds almost every day. how much is a 1940 nickel that i found today? I was surprised because i thought the bank sorted them all out all the silver by weight.
What could a dime and nickel that both have a goldish tinge and slight fine rays coming out of the center be?
Also a dime with good chunks of copper shoowing on the face and back?
1940 nickel about $0.25
Only certain nickels from 1942-1945 contain silver.
Not all banks filter their change so there is plenty of silver still in circulations.

Struck Through grease error they have no extra value.
Also a dime with good chunks of copper shoowing on the face and back?
Partial Missing Clad error it would start at about $25.00 in very-fine.

1983-P quarter.....idk if its worth anything but a few websites ive been on said about $35
Yes and no.
In Mint State 63 or higher it is that valuable because they are hardly ever seen in Mint State most of 1983 quarters are weak and very unclear.
But if lower than Mint State it is just $0.25.

I have a 1923 Liberty dime that was given to me from my great grandfather. Granted, she's not is hip hop shape, her backside is almost flattened and semi "rubbed off", front has the normal filtered dirt in the outer rim and around the face. (I can send a photo direct if requested on both front and back) I have the coin by itself, in a plastic coin bag to prevent any further damage.
Reason I am asking you what the dime might be worth is, a coin collector near where I live, only appraised it at maybe .60, but was a bit "too eager" to his hands on it for that sort of bid. I don't plan on selling it either, just would like an honest quote on how much it may be worth please. After seeing some on your website, I have a sneaking idea it's worth more than .60 cent! Another guy selling coins in the same store suggested your site, and stated I made a good call not to sell it to the coin dealer for that price. Thanks and much appreciate your time and help!!

About $1.45 this is a common dime and only worth its silver content.
Dealers often offer 50% value or less. A coin with a lot of wear also has less silver.
I have a 1998 and a 2008 copper Roosevelt dime. How much are they worth?
I found the 1946 P Roosevelt Silver!....
