East Carribean State Cent

IMG_0247
Found this lightweight little coin in my change yesterday. It was mistakenly given as a dime in my change.
IMG_0253
It's a penny from the East Caribbean States.

The East Carribean States only decided to start printing their own money in 1950. They have very few high valued coins. They mint money under the British currency and consist of at least twelve Caribbean countries including Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana. British Virgin Islands and others.

Here's the stat for this particular coin...
Type: 1 cent East Caribbean States
Year: 2002
Metal: Aluminum
Mintage: Not currently available.
Value: Unc $0.20

I opened up a roll of dimes today and thought a penny was in the roll! But it turned out to be a copper dime? Is it work anything? It looks completely copper, just like a penny but its a dime. It's date is 2005. Is it work nething? Im really interested to know cause its so weird looking.

Man said...

copper dime?

It may be real you need to weigh it, it should weigh 2.27 grams.

If not then it's a real error and worth a lot.

Even if it does weigh 2.27 grams it still may be an error but this kind can only be confirmed by an expert.

I've got a Two Dollar coin showing frontside Elizabeth II 2002 Eastern Caribbean States and on the backside The Duke of Wellington.

Is it any worth keeping this shiny coin?

Has anybody a clue from which metal (suppose gilt metal) is this made?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Man said...

Two Dollar coin showing frontside Elizabeth II 2002 Eastern Caribbean States and on the backside The Duke of Wellington

About $45.00 it is copper-nickel coin that was officially plated with gold.

It has too little gold to melt but only 10,000 were made so that is why you should keep it.

Anonymous said...

Hello,

thanks for the quick response.

Thanks again and greetings from Europe from an old Saxon (German).
This Caribbean coin hit me in my eyes and way. I bought it on an Antique Show for GBP 15,- (quid) near Manchester in U.K. a couple weeks ago. By the way I'm also collecting coins with railway motives.

Regards from North West England

I have a 2002 East Caribbean States 25cent piece. Queen Elizabeth The Second on heads, a ship on tails. The water has no waves(smooth finish)and there are only sails on the high part of the mast, no main sails. I believe this is a manufacturing defect. There is also a very tiny raised notch(spinal cord? lol) below the neckline of the Queen on heads side. Any ideas before I take it in? Thanks

Sounds like damage when one side is smooth and the other raised that is typical of someone smashing one side.

Even if this is not damage it could be a die break error which can cause a bump on one side leaving the other side less detailed.

Either way no extra value.

Big B said...

I thought of the die issue myself yes. Well thanks for your opinion.

I suspect it is just toned or plated, no extra value.
But weigh it to see if it's an error.
