i have a wheat penny from 1909 not in the greatest shape it is still readable. i also have a 1942 wheat coin in better shape but nowhere near new.
Well there are five different types of circulating 1909 wheat cents so knowing which type is half the solution. On a certain amount of 1909 wheat pennies there is a V.D.B. on the reverse, also only two mint marks exist blank=Philadelphia or S= San Francisco located underneath the date on the front. The least it can be worth is $3.50 for a 1909 at G-4( G= good everything worn but the date). The most it can be worth is $825.00 for a 1909S V.D.B. also at G-4. A Mint state(MS-60) 1909S V.D.B. can be worth $1,700 or more if it has a good luster.
Here's the stat for all 1909 wheat cents....
Year: 1909 V.D.B.
Metal: 95% copper 5% tin and zinc
Mintage: 27,995,000
Value: G-4 $11.00
Year: 1909S V.D.B.
Metal: 95% copper 5% tin and zinc
Mintage: 484,000
Value: G-4 $825.00
Year: 1909
Metal: 95% copper 5% tin and zinc
Mintage: 72,702,618
Value: G-4 $3.50
Year: 1909S
Metal: 95% copper 5% tin and zinc
Mintage: 1,825,000
Value: G-4 $100.00
Year: 1909S S over horizontal S (an error coin)
Metal: 95% copper 5% tin and zinc
Mintage: Amount unknown.
Value: G-4 $110.00
As for the 1942 penny it's worth significantly less and comes in three mint marks blank, S, and D = Denver. In EF-40( extremely fine condition slight wear and sharp details) it's about $0.50 for P and D example and $1.25 for S.
Here's the stat for 1942 pennies....
Year: 1942
Metal: 95% copper 5% tin and zinc
Mintage: 657,796,000
Value: G-4 $0.15
Year: 1942D
Metal: 95% copper 5% tin and zinc
Mintage: 206,698,000
Value: G-4 $0.15
Year: 1942S
Metal: 95% copper 5% tin and zinc
Mintage: 85,590,000
Value: G-4 $0.20

I have a 1930, a 1941 s and a 1950 wheat penny, I can't seem to find any info and would like to know if they are worh keeping?
Thanks for your help
1930 $0.10
1941S $0.10
1950 $0.10
They may change the design for the penny in 2009 so these prices will go higher.
Older U.S. coins are getting harder to find, they don't take up space so keep them.
I have a collection of "wheats" I know there is a 1926, 1945 and 1930-are they worth saving?
Female
1926 about $0.15
1930 about $0.10
1945 about $0.10
The 1930's or earlier are worth saving but anything after 1944 is just a little above face value.
I have a 1909 V.D.B. wheat penny and I'd like to know if it's worth anything. It doesn't have any mint marking under the date so it's Phil. right? It is in pretty good condition. Everything is readable. Thanks for your help.
1909 VDB in fine is now $5.50.
Fine has all details but it worn.
AU-50 is slightly worn but all details are sharp may be a bit discolored it has a value of $9.00.
It is Philadelphia.

This is either a silver-plated coin so then it has no real value.
Or it is an error which could be worth thousands.

I have found some info stating that 2 or 3 experimental coins struck in white metal variations are known to exist. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. grhill69@yahoo.com

1942 Candian penny with only one side of it stamped as normal, the Canadian maple leafs, the other side completely blank.whats the value?
To be more precise, one day I was rolling up some pennies with my wife, and lo and behold I happened to pick up this penny with only one side stamped as normal, the other,as Ive explained above has no markings, like a blank slug.
Their are no obvious signs of filing down one side,as I first momentarily suspected.
Man,can you please tell me the value of this coin,?
My wifes advise at the time when I found it was to "make sure I roll it up it the center" that way it wont be noticed.Lol.I didnt take her advise.

Not possible this is damage, no extra value.
I also have a silver looking 1942 D penny that sticks to a magnet. I see where you told someone it could be a fake or an off-metal error and to weigh it to see what it is. What would the weight for an off-metal error be vs. a fake? Thanks you
silver looking 1942 D penny that sticks to a magnet. I see where you told someone it could be a fake or an off-metal error and to weigh it to see what it is. What would the weight for an off-metal error be vs. a fake?
If fake it would weigh around 3.11 grams plus or minus 0.11 grams.
If an off-metal error the weight helps us find a possible explanation. There is a list of foreign coins the U.S made and they have weights we can compare for a match.
Hi,
I've been buying unsearched wheat pennies for years now. Just last week I found, what appeared to be a 1943 Zinc by looks but when I looked at it closer it's a 1942 Wheat Penny without a mint mark. Being in the sheet metal industry for about 18 years now, I'm not aware of any copper being magnetic. I stuck a magnet to it and it sticks, but not like a 1943 Zinc. The 1942 is attracted to the magnet but isn't drawn to the magnet as forcefully as a 1943. I also weighed the coin as suggested above.
First weighing a 1943 S Zinc penny which weighed 2.7 grams.
Second was a 1942 D copper penny which weighed 3.1 Grams.
Third, I weighed the 1942 (No Mint Mark) Zinc looking Wheat penny that I'd recently discovered which weighed 3.1 grams.
Just to be sure I didn't get the coins mixed up, I rechecked the weight on each coin and wrote it down.
I've searched and searched the web over the past week trying to find some information on this coin and the only information I can find is in This forum.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
the 1942 (No Mint Mark) Zinc looking Wheat penny that I'd recently discovered which weighed 3.1 grams.
You did everything correct and what you have is Steel-Plated or Nickel-Plated cent that was done as a fake.
The weight shows it just a copper cent someone tried to fake to look like an error, sorry.
As you noted a real Zinc cent weighs 2.7 grams even adding 0.15 for tolerance it still can never be close to 3.11 grams.
I checked the foreign production list for 1942 and the US did not make any magnetic coins close to that weight so I must finally conclude it is a plated fake.
You can always have a coin dealer look at in hand maybe weigh with a scale of 0.01 accuracy to be certain.

how much is a 1916 wheat penny worth with no mint mark?
silver one pound 1996 with queen elizabeth face on it
Assuming British about $37.50 if silver it is proof and very shiny.
There is a common circulated version that is what most people have, it's about $3.50 in high grades.
1916 wheat penny worth with no mint mark about 0.30

It is considered damaged, it sounds like someone drilled a hole to make into a pendant.
Although extra-fine it lost most of the value when turned into jewelery, about $5.00 or less.
I have a 1942 penny with no D marks, how much is it worth?

What country?
It doesn't say but there are 12 stars around the borders in the back and theres a leaf thingy, also in the front there's a globe.
2-cent euro penny and it sticks to a magnet, ...theres a leaf thingy,...
Sounds like from Germany about $0.05 it is copper-plated steel so it is magnetic, it's all normal.
Hello, I was wondering how much a 1939 wheat penny that I have is worth. It has somewhat of a luster to it. You can barely just see the "v" on the mint mark. But my real concern is that it has a hole drilled in it right through Abraham Lincoln's head.

Hi,I'm a student doing an interview for my thesis project. Can I ask you a few questions?
1)When did you become interested in the coin collecting business?
2)Why are some U.S coins more unique than others?
3)What are some coins you have been collecting/collected?
4)Why did you begin this blog?
1)When did you become interested in the coin collecting business?
--As a business in 1997 when the announcement for the state quarters came out. As a hobby ever since I was little kid finding wheat cents.
2)Why are some U.S coins more unique than others?
--Rarity is based on how many coins were issued and the amount that are found in high grades. 1933 $20 coins were never released but some people have them making them very unique. While certain 1980s quarters are common they were made so poorly that finding them in high near perfect grades is rare.
Also errors are uncommon and the limited numbers make them special.
3)What are some coins you have been collecting/collected?
--All I have no preferences, sets from the mints, world coins, etc. Basically every coin from every time and place.
4)Why did you begin this blog?
--Because at the time (2005) there were no good resources for low grade coin collectors. This hobby attracts people who want to turn profits of thousands of dollars, I just want to relax and find coins from my change.
Finding an odd coin is cool but when searching the web at the time you get dismissive comments since their value was little. I hope to bring the joy back to finding that odd coin with positive information.
Oh plus it helps me keep track of what I found.
A) Question for you. Can you tell me more about this thesis project?
How much is a 1942 penny with no mint mark and nothing on the back?

Hi, i have a 1942 wheat penny and is made of some sort of white metal. If i give the edges of the coin a little sqweez with my fingures it starts to bend almost like it is made of lead or some other soft metal. Ive seen older posts on the same penny year and color. Also i can take my fingure nail and scratch the metal very easily. I havent gotten a whieght on it yet but if it were a soft metal like copper or softer would it whiegh about the same? And is it possible it is a late 1942 cent that was a prototype metal or something? Thanks for any help that you can give.

1942 patterns were made of several types of metals and plastic except the design was completely different and not made at the mint.
So this type of error is not possible. It should be weighed because it may be another type of error.
But I suspect some kind of fake. Coins of any type should never bend.
Thnks for the help i think the same thing about fake on the 1942 cent.

I have a 1942 penny that looks to be double struck. It has weird designs struck into both sides of the penny and a crease around the outside edge like it has two layers. It also bulges out on the edge where the weird designs are so it is not perfectly round. The wear and tarnish seem to be pretty even so I am thinking striking error or damage shortly after mint.

It is hard to imagine.
Can you take good pictures and put them online somewhere and then drop a link here.
It could be an error called Broadstrike but it could also be damage.
Well, I hope this will do. it is the best I am capable of right now.

Maybe a pendant or belt buckle but this is clearly damage done outside the mint.
Sorry no extra value, plus it was harshly cleaned so even if an error it lost all value.

Sounds damaged, only worth its weight in silver.
It is not possible for a coin only to get stamped on one side.
Hi there,
I have a 1942 penny, which I know normally wouldn't be worth much. However, I believe it's an error coin. On the back, there is no AM in the word America. You can almost make out the letters, as if they had been worn down... but there are no marks of wearing down. I've searched the net and have not been able to find it. I have a picture if you are interested. What are your thoughts on this?

It sounds like a Struck Through Grease error where dirt gets on the die while being pressed.
Very common and no extra value.

I found a wheat penny as a kid stuck in asphalt. I'm sitting here now and I realize it says 1909, but it is in bad shape with a black coating and it looks slightly bent (like if you put half of it in a vice and barely bent it sideways). I'm almost positive there is no VDB but the rim is covered with a black hard material. I'm assuming it isn't worth anything, what should I do with it?

This would be labeled damaged and unless you see an S under the date you are correct it has almost no value, about $0.03.
Only an 1909-S would have extra value even if damaged.
I do not know how to safely take off tar but maybe a dip in pure acetone and gently scraping with a wet toothpick.
found a 1982 penny but this one may be an error it has the copper of the top ridge inwards covering the VDB initials on Lincolns right shoulder its about 4 millimeters across
found a 1982 penny but this one may be an error it has the copper of the top ridge inwards covering the VDB initials on Lincolns right shoulder its about 4 millimeters across
Sounds like a die break or Cud error about $1.00 in extra-fine.
Hi,
Recently when going though an old collection of wheat pennies, I found a 1942 penny that is bright/golden in color. The color is interesting though as it is clearly not just a copper color plated with a silver metal. I checked to see if it is magnetic and it is but much less so than a 1943 steel penny I have. It sounds like from earlier posts on this blog that others have described also having this same coin. Do you have any addition information about these or a recommendation about where I could find more information?
Thanks

Sounds plated and nearly all the others turn out to be plated.
That said you need to weigh it with a 0.01 gram scale.
Until you can get an accurate weight their is little information to estimate error or value.
I have a 1942D wheat penny that looks to be double stamped, where it says liberty on the left side underneath you can see the 4 and the 2 stamped backwards. On the right side above 1942 is stamped liberty backwards. What is that called? What do you think it's worth? Thanks.

This is called a Die Clash error where the reverse is stamped on the die and then transferred backwards to the front of the coin.
This is a common error and has no extra value.
I think I rephrased that incorrectly. On the front of my 1942D wheat penny above the year is liberty stamped backwards. Also on the front below the word liberty you can see 1942 stamped backwards. And there are circular grooves on the front of the coin (like the coin or die spun). Thanks.
I think I rephrased that incorrectly.
No you phrased it correctly.
Sounds like a Die Clash.
You can research these types and compare but unless you share an image link I can only say Die Clash.
I found a few here is one...
Die Clash Dime
Is a die clash transferring something from the back to the front or front to back? Because my liberty is stamped on the front 180 degrees. Also I see your images of the die clash but that's not what we have. Would I be able to email pictures of the coin to you. Thanks.
Would I be able to email pictures of the coin to you.
You can provide an email address and I will respond or put it up online somewhere and I will look.

Hello, i have a lot of coins and various war medals that i am curious on value. is there any way to contact you via phone?
No.
I know little about war medal values and your best bet is searching eBay or other auctions sites.
Also books at the library of book stores is also easier since you sit and take your time.
Eventually you are going to have to make a list of what you have and most online appraiser will ask for one. You make one on Excel or in google Docs and post on line for free to share.

Not really possible it may have been altered for jewelry.
I would have to see clear images of both sides but as for now, no extra value.
I have a 1909 wheat penny in fairly good shape not unc or anything like that but the unique thing about this coin is the reverse side of the coin is completely blank to me it doesn't look like it has been altered but was wondering if u had any info on it. I can provide pics if needed

This was altered to fit in a pendant.
It is not possible to have a coin with a blank side that is not warped.
So no extra value.

I have a "World Coin Library" Dansco Lincoln penny album, on the inside back cover it lists all the pennies up to the year 2000.
Beside the 1942 penny it list the amount minted and in parenthesis, before the total(of 657,828,600 it has a figure of (32600).
What does that represent?

An overstamp, fairly common no extra value.
That said some coin collectors do sell or trade them usually just a few dollars/ Since anyone can overstamp a coin it has no actual value.
