2006 Guatemala 10 Centavos

First Guatemalan coin in years. Guatemala is one of those countries that has so many problems that coins and currency do not travel far. Severe droughts and rampant drug cartels are wrecking the economy and displacing locals. Money at this point is a second thought.

The monolith of Quiriguá is the largest old world stela in the new world. Made as a historical document for the natives in this area of Guatemala made dozens of them. The site is now a tourist attraction and more antiquities are still being uncovered that tell the story of the ancient builders.
