1973 Netherlands 25 Cents

It has been a while since I found a non-Euro coin from the Netherlands. Pre-Euro coins have not gone up in value much, maybe a few cents, even though the are rare to find in your change. Still they were in the billions overall so they are common.

On the front of the coin you have former Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, it is written as JULIANA KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN. While on the back is 25 CENT is dividing the year 1973. There are two marks are privy and mint marks, a rooster and some other symbol I cannot identify.

2005 Netherlands 5 Euro Cents

This is a common Netherlands euro coin. In 2010 they reduced the production but even those have little extra value in high grade. 

Nothing new to report about The Netherlands or their currency. Again euros tend to be boring, I feared that would be the case as most euro commemorative coins are of higher denominations. I may never find a special euro coin but there is always a slim chance.

2006 Netherlands 5 Euro Cents

The Netherlands is facing the bird flu, insensitive Christmas costumes, and worse of all a love of soccer. That may be why some have come to visit our land and drop some euros as pennies. 

I think they have updated the picture on the front to the current monarch but I have yet to receive one. These older ones have not gone up in value and probably will not for the next couple of decades.

2001 Netherlands 10 Euro Cents

Apparently The Netherlands has a good chance of winning the World Cup at this point. From what I hear that is a soccer trophy that non-Americans care about. While they fight over that let me show this Netherlands euro coin I found recently.

The most common of all the Netherlands 10 euro cent coins it has the typical BEATRIX KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN and date found on most Netherlands coins. The head is surrounded by stars and dots.

Now I remember why I did not originally take close up shots of certain coins yet I still posted them. The reason is mostly because they were hazy and my close up camera skill does not help the overall look.

Like I said back in 2006 this was a stranger find,. Often when you see a tourist struggling with change if you offer to help you can always gently ask/hint if they want to trade some of their native money.

The obverse has twelve star in the outer ring and the Utrecht privy mark of wine tendril with grapes. BEATRIX KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN 2001 or Beatrix Queen Of The Netherlands with her profile.

The edge has GOD * ZIJ * MET * ONS * or GOD * BE * WITH * US * incused on the reeded surface.

The reverse has 2 EURO and the first Euro Zone map with stars and a little LL for the designer Luc Lucyx.

Stickers on U.S. coins have been mainly used for commercial advertizing, like the Silver Surfer quarter or the Cici's Pizza cent. With this comes legal issues about using money in an illegal way. American companies use stickers to go around the law but we are not the only country that uses this loophole.

The Netherlands, I believe, has similar laws. I found this sticker-coin in a lot that I bought years ago. When I first got the coin I did not know if the sticker was anti-drugs or pro-needle exchange. At the time in NYC there was a big advertising campaign for clean needle exchanges for drug users. I thought The Netherlands had a similar campaign but some research showed otherwise.

The sticker says drugs gebruiken, is jezelf misbruiken which means drug use, is self abuse. It has a needle and what looks to be a user. I have seen this on Netherlands coins before but in blue font and white background. I do not know if this was a government or non-profit organization campaign. So unless something was lost in translation the message is that all drugs are bad for you.

The coin itself is very scratched and has Netherlands gum, I have seen that gum on other Netherlands coins, stuck to it in places. Still the sticker is flattened enough to see the date of 1969 and the fish mintmark. It could have been the older fish mintmark or the later cοck( rooster ) although both are from the Utrecht Mint.

Crazy Foreigners

Back in April I met a lady from the Netherlands I said never been there but I do collect coins from that place. She then graciously offered me some coins and a bill that she couldn't use in New York.

Apparently she is traveling the world. Here are the ones she gave me plus a Canadian and American coin I found in my change.
