Welcome to the Bahamas

Do you have a coin form the Bahamas Island and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Continuing with some decent looking coins from the bag I bought is some from the Bahamas.

While half of the coins were normal circulated types they did include some proofs. Which is not all that great because the circulating issues were actual rarer then the proof. For example the 1972 10 Cents had 11,000 coins minted while the proofs numbered 35,000. It's harder to find a brilliant uncirculated than an untouched proof.

Obverse above.

Reverse below.
These coins were made by the Franklin Mint in the U.S.A. in matte, special uncirculated, and proof. The little stylized F on the reverse is the mark of the Franklin Mint. Matte is basically the circulated coins, special uncirculated is like proof but all completely mirrored. Proof has the background mirrored and frosted designs.

Starting from right to left.
Here are the stats for these Bahamas coins...
Type/Country: 10 Cents Proof/Bahamas
Year: 1972
Mint: Franklin Mint
Mintage: 35,000
Metal: Copper-Nickel
Value: $1.00 if untouched

Type/Country: 25 Cents Proof/Bahamas
Year: 1971
Mint: Franklin Mint
Mintage: 31,000
Metal: Nickel
Value: $1.50 if untouched

Type/Country: 50 Cents Proof/Bahamas
Year: 1973
Mint: Franklin Mint
Mintage: 35,000
Metal: 80% Silver
Value: $7.00 if untouched($1.00 in crease since 2008)

These were sold in sets but if they were less then perfect they were cut out and put into circulation by collectors.

Do you have a coin form the Bahamas Island and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Many fakes exist, some of these are also worth their weight in metal content.

That said if real about $7,600,000 but currently they are illegal to own and no company would grade it.

I can not say what to do next since it has too many legal problems but if you suspect that it may be real contact a lawyer first.

Hi,

What is the present market value of 1969 uganda 6 coin silver proof set (Pope visit) in original case with certificate and all the papers ? It cointains 5.91 oz ASW and the bullion value of the set is approximately $230. What is a fair price for this set? Is it very rare and collectible item? Thanks

Man said...

1969 uganda 6 coin silver proof set (Pope visit) in original case with certificate and all the papers

Currently the silver value is out pacing the collectors value. So about $250.00 is the current rate based mostly on silver content.

About 6,070 were made so they are scarce but not rare. The 10-coin set is rarer and worth the most.

Your blog has been of utmost help to me to refer to the value of some of the coins held by me and I am sure that it has helped a number of budding collectors.

I was browsing through ebay with regard to coins listed by various sellers and my eye fell on the 1970 6 coin South Korea Silver set consisting of 50,100,200,250,500 and 1000 won in original case with COA. To my astonishment it was priced at a starting price of about 1000$ by a couple of sellers and a Buy it Now price of 1400$ by one seller. Any particular reason why this set and each of these coins are highly valued because going through the Krause catalog I found out that each of these coins has a mintage of approximately 4200 which is small but not scarce and the set is valued at 1100$ in the catalog. Don't you believe these are highly overvalued by collector's and in the Krause catalog?

I am just asking this question so that you can enlighten me with respect to how the value of a coin/set is determined in Krause as there are many coins/set in Krause with a mintage of less than 1000 which is quite scarce still they are undervalued in the catalog.

What according to you should be the present market value of this set? Also it would be of great help if you can tell me the present market value of the following sets some of which I own and some which I am interested in purchasing:-

1969 3 coin Jordan set

1970 4 coin sharjah set

1993 3 coin uganda wildlife set consisting of 5000 schillings (16oz) , 10000 schillings (32oz)and a silver coin in a wooden case

1992 Equatorial guinea 4 coin wildlife set consisting of 7000 Francos gold and silver(16oz) coins and 15000 Francos gold and silver(27 oz) coin set. These are listed in Krause separately but not as a set.

1970 Indonesia 5 coin silver set in original case.

Thank you - Richard

I am sorry I forgot to add a couple of other sets which I wanted to add to my collection

1970 Ethiopia 5 coin proof set
1990 Republic of Niue 6 coin $50 set
1970 UMM AL QAIWAIN PROOF SET
1970 Ras al khaima 8 coin silver Gold set
1970 5 coin Iran set
1971 Haiti 9 coin silver set of Indian chiefs

I understand that you must be very busy and might not be in a position to answer my queries promptly. Take your own sweet time to answer my queries if possible and I really appreciate you for taking some of your valuable time to answer my queies.

One more thing I wanted to know is how to calculate the present market value of a coin/set as I could not find the silver and gold value used as a reference by Krause to list the values of the coin/set in the catalog. If you are aware of the bullion value used by Krause (2010)to determine values please inform me about the same and also steps I need to take to determine the present MV based on it as I would not like to disturb you every time I need to calculate the MV of a coin/set I require.

Thanks - Richard

Korea is one of those countries that rarely made proof coins 1970 was the first and for the 20th century the made 10 proof sets.
Rarity has to place in context so although some countries make less than 150 coins they make them every year for 50 years.
I would say $1,200.00 is average.

Bullion Value for that catalog...(page 1)
$1,200 per ounce for platinum
$850 - $950 per ounce for gold
$200 - $225 per ounce for palladium
$12.50 - $15.00 per ounce for silver

1970 Ras al khaima 8 coin silver Gold set about $8,000.00
1970 5 coin Iran set??? Either 1971 or 1969
1971 Haiti 9 coin silver set of Indian chiefs about $400.00

These prices are all an estimate at present metal values which are dominating collectors values.
32oz an 16oz coins have been selling at ridiculous prices since everyone is under the impression by December silver will be $100 an ounce.

Thanks for the information.

The 1972 Ethiopia 5 coin set has a mintage of 50000 still in the catalog it is valued at $250. Any reasons for the same? What is it's present MV?

1971 Iran 5 coin set

1970 UMM AL QAIWAIN Silver PROOF SET PS1

The way the bullion prices have increased over the past 1 year or so ( almost 130% increase in silver) do you think that the values listed in the Krause catalog won't be relevant for reference in the present scenario as the bullion value has overtaken the collector value of the sets in many instances as mentioned by you? Any ideas When Krause will release the next edition of this book and will they revise the bullion value for reference and also the collector value of the coins/set accordingly?

How do you calculate the MV of any coin/set taking into account the bullion value used as a reference in Krause?

It is mindboggling the way the prices of gold and silver have increased in such a short span of time. Would you recommend investing in Gold and Silver coins considering their melt value and also a numismatic premium and as a safe bet compared to other investment options or Do you believe this bubble can break at any time? Thanks

I just wanted to add that you have indicated that the market value of 1971 Haiti 9 coin set is approximately $400 but it contains about 13.6 ASW which works out to approximately $550 (bullion value). So my submission to you would be if I get the set for $550 is it good and should I dive in or should I stick to the collector value?

As mentioned by you the bullion value has overtaken the catalog value of the coins/set in many instances and I am no longer able to make any sense of the values given in Krause and am thoroughly baffled and confused.

My bad I was going by old Heritage auction values, on these scarce sets I bypass the books and look for actual sales. Join Heritage for free to see old sales.

But yes always go by the Metal Value when they begin to outpace the collectors.
What Krause might do is give values like BV+5% or BV+20% because it is the market is changing to fast.

Man said...

1972 Ethiopia 5 coin set about $350.00

1971 Iran 5 coin set about $35.00

1970 UMM AL QAIWAIN Silver PROOF SET PS1 about $500.00

By the way the sets you picked are very unique, for instance anything from Iran is going up and down with the constant threat of war and revolution.

True for all Arabic coins.

--Jun 29, 2011 and like I said they should do BV + % but then again they are always a bit slow.

How do you calculate the MV of any coin/set taking into account the bullion value used as a reference in Krause?
--I use auctions I let recent sales speak for themselves.

Would you recommend investing in Gold and Silver coins considering their melt value and also a numismatic premium and as a safe bet compared to other investment options or Do you believe this bubble can break at any time?
--I do not invest in coins, but if I did I would go for metal value.
And yes all bubbles burst it is their nature.

No such thing Bahamas did not make coins before 1966.

Either post pictures somewhere or describe in detail both sides.

What is the present market value of this item

Country: Haiti

Year: 1973

Mint/ Proof: 1 Proof, 1 Mint.

Condition:Sealed with Leatherette case and Certificate. 1. Serie Proof & 1. Serie Fleurs de Coins

Case/ Holder: The case is in fair to good condition.

I checked the Krause catalog and came across this

KM# Date Mintage Identification I.P M.V

PS13 1973 (4) 3,500 KM#102-105 60.00 50.00

What does serie Proof and serie Fleurs de coins mean? The krause does not list any 8 coin set being made 1 proof set and 1 mint set ? Both the sets come in a case with certificate.

Proof is with a mirror finish.
Fleurs are just uncirculated with a normal or satin finish.

The krause does not list any 8 coin set being made 1 proof set and 1 mint set ?
It does.
MS2 1973 (8) — KM#102, 104, 105, 107-111 60.00 37.50
PS12 1973 (8) 1,250 KM#102-105, 107-109, 111 830.00 600.00

Because of metal values these should be at least 20% more.

What year Krause are you using?

Anonymous said...

I understand that Krause lists 2 8 coin set but this set which I am referring to contains coins listed in Krause as KM#102-105 and only one 4 coin set of 25 and 50 gourdes is listed in Krause as mentioned below.

KM# Date Mintage Identification I.P M.V
PS13 1973 (4) 3,500 KM#102-105 60.00 50.00

Did haiti release KM#102-105 in 2 versions proof and uncirculated with normal finish and as one package consisting of 8 coins with 4 coins in each plastic sleeve? Do both these versions contain silver coins or only the proof version? what is the ASW, mintage and market value of both these sets?

Your explanation is confusing.

--Yes both have silver.

what is the ASW, mintage and market value of both these sets?
If you have the book just look up the ASW since I'm still confused what you may have.
Market value about $150.00 or 20% above silver which ever is currently higher.

Just for metal value alone it is $480+ to an honest jeweler. Gold is rising everyday by December it may be worth twice the value.
0.9170 Gold 0.3219 oz. AGW
Gold $1506.50/oz as of today that is $484.94 of gold in your coin.

If you can't find an honest jeweler or coin dealer then try eBay.

I just wanted to update you with regard to my query on 1975 Nicaragua Silver Proof set. I was not sure of it's value or how much it was worth and I had asked a question to you whether it was worth 105$ which I was willing to pay for? To which you had replied that at that price it was a bargain as it's vallue was about 200$.

I won this set for a paltry sum of 80$ which was the starting price and I am extremely excited by this. The reason I believe I got this for a steal was because the seller had listed it under a different category. Another seller who had a similar set for sale had listed it under the right category and that set sold for about 265$.

I would like to thank you for sparing your valuable time and giving me your advice. Many times we just take somebody's help but forget to thank them after their help. Take care and God Bless you.

Only the special proofs and uncirculated would have the "stylized F" all circulating coin did not have the mark.
If a regular coin it may just be scratched or maybe they reused a proof die on a regular issue.
I suspect damage, no extra value either way.

1968 5 cents pineapple reverse about $0.15 in very-fine.

All are copper-nickel, no silver.

Were this XF I would say $150+ is about right.
And if you think it would grade XF then it's a good buy.

VF+ should be at most $100, but if this is just VF you'll lose. Also assume you may want to have it graded and that will cost $50 so getting cheaper will be better.

Also assuming this is not the Proof or Restrike version that are worth more.

Hi,
I have a Bermudan $25 cupro-nickel Uncirculated coin celebrating a Royal Visit in 1975. The coin is sealed in original plastic/card cover. I know that the minting for these was way below the other $25 silver proof for the same visit (1,293 v 14,709) because the Franklin Mint forgot to offer it to collectors. Two years later it was changing hands for $100. Has it gone up in value or down?

About $60.00 the reason it went down is that the few minted were saved and graded, most have high grades lowering the value.

Also 1,193 were made in Uncirculated.
100 were made in Matte Finish and are worth less since all of them are near perfect ($45.00).

Some sort of state Medallion, they should be brass or bronze but I've never heard of a silver one.

Unfortunately I have no verifiable info, most of these are just worth there weight in metal. I suggest try going to a coin shop or jeweler to see if it is silver.

Sorry I could not be more help but medals are tough.

About 10% over current metal values.

As you may suspect gold values are outpacing collectors value. Collectors are know using percentage instead of a definite value for the low mintage sets (1,250 made).

5,578 were made so often they go for $125 if no tarnishing or hazing is seen.

1992 Vanuata 50 Vatu about $21.00
1993 Vanuata 50 Vatu about $21.00

Where can I sell this set and what price can I expect to fetch for the same?

I would like to buy 1974 CAYMAN ISLANDS 25 DOLLAR AND TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS 20 CROWN .925 SILVER COIN SET (Churchill) in original wooden case with COA's and in pristine condition. What is the market value of this set and what fair offer can I make to the seller for buying this set? Regards John

About $60.00 I do not believe this is an official set, but both coins are real just from different sets.

Different countries generally do not mix coins.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. After a bit of digging, This is what i found while searching on the net. Thought it will help you as well as fellow coin collectors:-

http://books.google.co.in/books?id=a0PgB-pvfaoC&lpg=PP1&pg=PA381#v=onepage&q&f=false

You can refer to page no 381 where it is mentioned that 4300 sets were issued in proof by these 2 nations at an issue price of $80.

http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/world-coin-prices.aspx?category=48269&worldcoinid=132595

http://churchill-collector.com/for-sale-churchill-centenary-cayman-is-25-coin-turks-caicos-20-crowns-proof/

What will be the present market price now taking into consideration the set is almost 40 years old as I find it hard to believe that the value of the set $60 has depreciated by $20 after 40 years.

Thanks for your help.

--Correct I overlooked that and should have read twice.

I remember the individual ones sold on blue cards by the RCM. They did sell proofs in cases which I forgot about.

A quick auction search on Heritage and eBay shows current value at $60.00 - $80.00, although $80 is overpaying.

ebay current auction:
On sale $59.99

Sold listing $80.00

I cannot link the Heritage auctions as they require membership.

Just because coins are sold at $80 does not mean the value will go up over the years.

The 2005-S 11-piece US Proof cent sold for $22.95 and is now worth $12.00.

Thanks for the detailed information as well as the links provided by you for the 2 coin set. I bid on the ebay link provided by you and won the set for $61 which I sincerely hope I won for a good price and have not overpaid for this set. I hope it's value will accelerate in the future as the present bullion (melt) value of the set itself is $58. Also many thanks to you for opening my eyes with regard to the value of a coin/set. I was under the wrong impression that the value of any coin/coin set ( gold, silver, platinum) 30 to 50 years old would appreciate under all the circumstances due to the rarity, limited mintage as well as increase in the intrinsic value of the precious metals over a period of 40 years. But after going through your comment it seems that my assumption is not always true as the issue price in many cases is far more than the actual/market price of the coin/set in many cases due to the premium charged by the mint at the time of the issue of the coin/set as well as it is based on demand and supply.

That is your best bet, these sets seem to only have a little above melt value.

Good buy, even is hazy or less than perfect it is a great deal.

I have won the below coin recently on ebay

http://www.ebay.com/itm/190924944285?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

I have found out that the coin is 1985 China 10 yuan coin Decade for Women from other sources. What is the present value and market price for this coin as I have won the coin for $50. The mintage I found it to be 4000. Are there 2 varieties of this coin i.e straight hair and accented hair? which one have I won and is there a difference in value between the 2 types? I have seen the coin listed from $499 (Graded) to above $1500 ungraded on ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/350902663778?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

http://www.ebay.com/itm/181233132145?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Also while researching the coin on the net I have come across a couple of articles where it is mentioned that there are high grade counterfeits of this coin circulating in the market. How do I distinguish between a genuine coin and a counterfeit? I would like to sell this coin on ebay but being ungraded I am a bit apprehensive about the coin being switched by an unscrupulous buyer? How do I take care of my interest and also to avoid claims that the coin I have shipped is a counterfeit? I would appreciate a detailed explanation from your side with regard to my queries to take care of my interest. Thanks

...1985 China 10 yuan coin Decade for Women...
--Actually it is a 1984 coin with no date, it is often labeled as 1985 by NGC not PGCS.
In MS-65 about $250.00 anything less about $60.00.

Yours has tons of scratches on the plastic but I see some dark spots and tarnish and possibly scratches on the coin. Which would make it a $60-$75 at most. If more than 3 scratches and many spots then just twice metal value.

Are there 2 varieties of this coin i.e straight hair and accented hair?
--This is more like sharp versus not sharp. The "accented hair" just has more detail and strands visible in the hair of the 3rd woman. The first few coins are always the sharpest and have the most detail the rest become less detailed. Variety or not this kind of detail is for coins graded MS-66 or higher, plus only an expert can tell.

How do I distinguish between a genuine coin and a counterfeit?
Chinese fakes are amazing and often contain silver in the same weight, only a true expert can tell. Still you look for metal bubbles, non-sharp edges in the design, and wrong weight.

What concerns me the most is that your coin is listed as a Laos 3000 Kip Anticipation, which is worth exactly $50 in MS-65.

I am interested in purchasing the following coin/medal:-

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2003-SILVER-100-LEWIS-CLARK-EXPEDITION-PROOF-SHAWNEE-NATION-4-OZS-/300688900128?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item4602748020

2003 SILVER $100 LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITION PROOF SHAWNEE NATION 4 OZS

Is the above a legal tender coin or a medal as I am not able to find any reference in the Krause catalog with regard to the same.
Is the silver content mentioned correct? Also what is the present market value for this coin/medal as I am not sure whether $200 is fair or not. Thanks Bob

2003 SILVER $100 LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITION PROOF SHAWNEE NATION 4 OZS

These are technically medals. The tribe that issued these do not use a private currency so they are not legal on the reservation.

They sell for about $200.00 depending on the price of silver and 4oz is common.

The 4 large coins are silver and the 5 smaller coins are not.

$5 dollar coin is 0.9250 Silver 1.2526 oz.
$2 dollar coin is 0.9250 Silver
0.8862 oz.
$1 dollar coin is 0.8000 Silver 0.4666 oz.
50 cent coin is 0.8000 Silver 0.2667 oz.

25 cent is 100% nickel

15 cent is cupro-nickel
10 cent is cupro-nickel
5 cent is cupro-nickel

1 cent is brass

Thanks for your prompt revert. Are there chances of COA included with the coin/coin set being wrong? I referred to Krause catalog today which my friend has and the asw of the Zaire coin set is what you have mentioned. The COA for the Isle of Man 10 crowns set mentions 999 purity of 311 gms silver and 999.9 purity of 12.44 gms gold ( it claims that the 10 images of cat on the coin is pure gold and each image is 1/25. But the Krause catalog differs as it does not mention anything about the gold part as well as the asw is also different. In these instances how do we find out which is the correct information.

One more thing I wanted to ask you is you have said that Cook Islands 5 coin gold love angels fair value is USD 1400. Any specific reason for the value being so low. The montage of this set is 100 which I believe is pretty rare and it contains approx 1.08 oz gold which comes to around USD 1400 as melt value of this set. Doesn't this set have any numismatic value ?

Man said...

Thanks for your prompt revert. Are there chances of COA included with the coin/coin set being wrong?
--Possibly but the book tends not to have the most up to date info. I think the coins are exactly as the COA said but to test it the books would have to destroy the coin.

Doesn't this set have any numismatic value ?
--As far as I know all of them survived in high grade and that means they may have metal value + 10% but not much interest means they stay low.

I am interested in purchasing year 2000 Australia 1 Kilo .999 silver 30 Dollars Kookaburra coin in original capsule of issue. I had asked the seller to consider selling it for $700 but he has offered to sell it for $ 720. What is the fair price and value for this coin and also what is its mintage? The melt value works out to about $ 640 for the coin. Is paying a premium of $80 for this coin worth it?
