Do you have an error coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.
Generally I look over all my coins but recently I've been really eyeing them like a collector. I here of so many types of coins that at first I ignored them and just collected by year. Now though I'm checking for any little variance.
Towards the end of December I found this dime in my piggy-bank(not actually in the shape of a pig).Notice the arrows are pointing at some raised metal that forms a crack or lightning bolt shape.Upon closer inspection there are actually two cracks.
This is an authentic error.
It is called a die crack because the die used to press the coin cracked and transfered the results on this and probably thousands of others before a mint inspector noticed.
The error coin book classifies this as II-D-1 Die Crack (W), the W stand for "wear" meaning that is how the mistake was formed. This classification is for three or less cracks that don't span the coin.
This particular error is not rare so the value is only twice the face value with only these minor cracks.
Here's the stats...
Type: 10 Cents / II-D-1 Die Crack /2 "light" cracks(1 from rim to center)
Year: 1983-P
Mintage: 647,025,000
Metal: 75% copper 25% nickel(Outer Layers), 100% copper(Inner Core)
Value: EF-40 $0.50
Because the coin is in quite a nice state it may be worth $0.25 and double it for the die crack for a grand total of $0.50. Not much but the first error of this type I recognized and kept.

Hi! I stumble upon a 1905 one cent piece and I was wondering it's value?
1905--$1.75 in good, which has no "LIBERTY" visible on the headdress in the front.
If "LIBERTY" is completely visible it's $3.50
Hi! I have obtained a "1989 D" dime that has something embedded in it. It clearly shows on both sides and I was hoping you could give me an estimate on it.
Hi! I just posted about the dime. I also have an image. http://imageigloo.com/images/1454scan0001-1.JPG
Defective Planchet is the offical name
Bubbled plating---
These planchets have gases trapped between the core material and the plating.
Yours is not in great shape plus these aren't really big amongst collectors.
It is only about $2.00, I'd hang on to it because the error coin market goes up and down fast.
okay,Thanks!
Have a 1970 dime with bubbles on both front (pencil eraser size), and back, (apple seed size), wondering what the value may be. Send answer to amldoc69@yahoo.com. Thank you,
Arlene
1970 dime with bubbles
If the bubbles are small the are caused by dirt. If the bubble is big it is caused by heat.
The problem is that anyone with a blowtorch can fake this coin error. Either way it is worth at most $2.00 but most likely it does not any extra value. Sorry.
Hi I found a 2002p dime with the face side appearing to be all copper and the back silver. Could this be worth something?
2002-P dime
This is a full missing clad layer on one side error.
In mint state(no scratches, no wear, nice luster) it would be about $75.00.
This is a nice error and commonly sold on eBay for $100 if professionally certified.

On average if you mean the 1928 notes it is C they're about $1,500.00 in low grades, but other rare ones exist in 1928.
dime has copper on the top and around the edges.i have one that is a year 1966.
On the edges it's normal but on the face of the coin is a plating error worth less then $25 unless it is full-copper face.
A little copper showing through is not rare.

Searching through my penny collection this a.m. I found this 2000 penny not in the best of condition, but it definitely has an extra 0 and 8 printed up above the 2000 mark. Is this a coin with value?

It's not a good photo but from what I can see it is not anything significant.
As for the 2007 error it sounds the same. No extra value.
Maybe it is some kind of doubling but it is not a true error.
I own nine 1928 series D two dollar bills a red seal on the left and five two dollars with no letter that have the seal on the right.

I have a question about mercury dime and its value. I have a mercury dime "1943 with w shape". I don't know what w shape stands for, but is embedded on a right side of lady. I hope it is in a good condition. I have an image of my mercury dime taken in: http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/2909/mercurydimemd4.jpg
Thanks for your time.
"1943 with w shape". I don't know what w shape stands for, but is embedded on a right side of lady. I hope it is in a good condition.
The "W shape" is actual an A over W.
They're the coin designer's monogram, Adolph A. Weinman.
You're coin looks about VF-20 or very-fine it's about $1.60.
I have a 1921 Morgan Dollar that has several die cracks in it. I was told this is EXTREMELY rare. Total of 7 "cracks" I beleive.
Does anyone know anything about this?
1921 Morgan Dollar that has several die cracks in it. I was told this is EXTREMELY rare. Total of 7 "cracks"
Not rare but very wanted. Nearly every Morgan is being attributed using VAM letters.
Go to this website...http://www.vamworld.com/
And either search Morgan's by date or post a picture in the forum.
These collectors are very passionate and can help better than I could.
I found a 1935J dollar also known as a silver certificate. Notice the seal is blue instead of green.
1935J dollar also known as a silver certificate
No such thing as a 1935-J. The highest is 1935 H.
There are so many varieties that without a serial number it is hard to say the start at $2.50 and go up from there.
Hi
I have a question I have a 1935-H silver certificate
E76563512A (blue) in fair condition
Treasurer of the us signed by what it looks like M.A. Sueiau ?? and the Secretay Henry Morgenthau JR. also it does not have the "In God We Trust" on the back. The seal is blue and on the right bottom corner it has the H and really small #s 343 would you be able to help me find out how much its worth or point me the right direction? thank you
1935-H silver certificate
E76563512A (blue) in fair condition
This cannot be a 1935-H
it must be a 1935 which has the signature W. A. Julian and Henry Morgenthau JR.
The H you describe does not go with the serial number. It is the facility mark.
It's about $5.00.
so, the H then series next to it i was mistake? Or am i just looking at it wrong?!
Sorry to bother you again thank you for all your help by the way.

1989 D dime and it is missing the e in dime on the backside..says ONE DIM
This is a weak strike or struck through grease error, no extra value.
I have a 2000 dime that I have a question about. On the front, just under the chin, is a "bubble". All the printing is readable. On the back, it is the same. The bubbles do not line up and are not the same size. I can get pictures taken if you think I should. Also, the dime is dark, and needs cleaning. Should I clean it and if so, with what? Thanks, Richard
By the way. Any idea if it's worth anything. LOL
2000 dime that I have a question about. On the front, just under the chin, is a "bubble"...the dime is dark, and needs cleaning.
This is done by heating the coin it is considered damage. The dark dirty appearance is a giveaway someone cooked this coin, no value.

My Dad is going thru coins he has collected for very many years. He came across a Indian Head Buffalo Nickel that is the size of an pencil eraser. It is so small even with a magnifying glass you can only make out the Indian head on the front and the buffalo on the back. Was curious what the value of it is if any?

This is a Missing Clad Layer error it's about $50.00 ungraded, it may go up to $150 if graded MS-64 or more.
hello, i acquired this coin in a grab bag type auction on ebay and have had no luck in identifying it anywhere.not even the person i got it from had a clue. the date side looks just like a chinese dragon coin, but the other has what almost looks like a circular maze in the middle, a sun on top, and a dragon up either side forming out from a swirl of smoke on the bottom. please help
he date side looks just like a chinese dragon coin, but the other has what almost looks like a circular maze in the middle, a sun on top, and a dragon up either side forming out from a swirl of smoke on the bottom.
I'm sorry but without a picture it's near impossible to say exactly.
It maybe some sort of China 10 Cash or maybe a Thailand piece but I still can't say.
i took some pics of the coin:
http://s673.photobucket.com/albums/vv94/87elky383
took some pics of the coin:
This is a Kwangtung Pattern coin from either 1889 or 1890 it seems to be the 1 dollar coin and is about $12,000.00.
The problems:
-Yours has been badly cleaned which ruins the value.
-Nearly all examples found are fakes. They weigh about 25.8 grams and are silver but counterfeiters have become so skilled that they can fake both of those. Cleaning a fake coin is a way of getting around detection.
Judging by the scratches, pits, and edge I think fake but you may want to verify first to see if it's silver then to see by a dealer if it is real or not.
Additonally Google "kwangtung pattern" without the quotes and in a coin community forum you'll see a good discussion about these pieces.
thank for your help. im not rich, but a fine copy i guess best they've seen in a while
Hi, I have found a coin from 1945 and it is so rusty I can not really read the writing on it. One side has a mans head with a short or normal mans haircut , looking leftwards and when I look on the otherside it has a ship with sails and underneath the ship is writing reading 1945
both sides have writing at the top going the hole way round the coin.
so i was wondering if you could find it's value and from which country it is from?
Hello can anyone help me?
please
1945 and it is so rusty I can not really read the writing on it. One side has a mans head with a short or normal mans haircut , looking leftwards and when I look on the otherside it has a ship with sails and underneath the ship is writing reading 1945
Without a better description or picture it's nearly impossible to say.
What metal? What size? What weight?
The only coin I know from 1945 with a ship on the back is a Canadian dime.
Any coin this damaged is worth only the metal content.
You can always use a free photo site to put up the image.
I have a 2008 dime with a copper back. I was wondering how much it would be worth?
2008 dime with a copper back
Reverse Clad Layer Missing is about $100.00 in mint state.
Thanks man
hi i recently found a a 1935 Canada Dollar, a 1938 "GEORGIVS VI" penny from great britain, a 1963 quenn elizabeth II penny with the same design, a Canadian dime from 1940, a canadian penny from 1942, a canadian quarter from 1953, and a 1996 US nickel with the tails side missing- perhaps it was just cut out by someone. Are any of these worth anything? Thanksa
and i 1950 us dime with a small "s" by the torch
1935 Canada Dollar about $13.00
1938 "GEORGIVS VI" penny from Great Britain about $0.20
1963 queen Elizabeth II penny with the same design about $0.10
Canadian dime from 1940 about $1.50
Canadian penny from 1942 about $0.10
Canadian quarter from 1953 about $2.75
1996 US nickel with the tails side missing- perhaps it was just cut out by someone, no extra value it sounds damaged. If it was some kind of error even a faint outline of either side would still be seen, never fully flat.
1950 us dime with a small "s" about $1.50
i have a 1998 dime and the edges on both sides are raised, if you look at it from the side it looks as thick as two dimes together but the center of the coin has the thickness of one...is this worth anything?
1998 dime and the edges on both sides are raised, if you look at it from the side it looks as thick as two dimes together but the center of the coin has the thickness of one.
Sounds like a finned rim or high fin.
Ungraded it's about $25 but these types need grading but can get damaged before grading.
They are very delicate if true finning and that is why they can sell for hundreds.
i recently found a 2002D nickel with Jefferson's on both side,,,, how can i tell if it is authentic and how much its worth
2002D nickel with Jefferson's on both side,
This type of error is not possible.
Under high magnification where the rim of the coin meets the field of the coin you will see a gap where someone drilled and glued two coin into one. These are magician's coins sold at toy stores, I own a few of these.
If you still suspect this is real take it to a coin dealer or coin club.
It would cost you $40 to have it graded and most likely it would be rejected as a fake.
thanks for the 411

HELLO,i have been going through my coins as well and believe i have found one of these, its a 1992 or 1998 dime,(cant quite tell what the last number is because of the edge), it has an unusual raised flat copper looking rim and appears as if a penny rim was placed over a dime but u can tell its one piece, the center is setting below the rim on both sides with a mint mark of P on it.
Im curious if you can tell me more about this and how to go about maybe selling it for an appropriate price and if so what that price might be for it. thanks
it has an unusual raised flat copper looking rim and appears as if a penny rim was placed over a dime but u can tell its one piece, the center is setting below the rim on both sides with a mint mark of P on it.
The copper is the core of the clad dime.
It sounds like a finned rimmed, possibly a braodstrike, but most likely some sort of Off-Center error either way I can't fully judge and most likely a dealer would need to see it in hand.
Around $20 if it's not damage more if you you can the error identified. Sorry i couldn't be more helpful but it's a hard error to imagine.
ok thanks, whats your email so i can send u some pictures, cant figure out how to post them here ?
whats your email so i can send u some pictures, cant figure out how to post them here ?
Just use Imageshack or someother free photo site and then drop a link here.
i dont understand why that site wont let me upload, i registered, uploadedthem, it showed me the upload bar, then afterwards it dont show anything and tells me i cant upload without subscribing or use the action window in right to do it, i tried that way and nothing...so i uploaded them to my myspace photos, heres a direct link http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.editAlbumPhotos&albumID=2844458
aww crude , i just tried that link a min ago now it dont work, but u should still be able to view them by going to my page then my photos ,in there is a folder marked weird coin www.myspace.com/dragonxfantasy
so i uploaded them to my myspace photos,
Your pic are very blurry. Is the edge smooth or ridged like a normal dime?
I can't see the edge but it looks like someone spooned the coin. This is when a person takes a spoon and smashes the edge in order to make a ring then later they drill out the center. Damaging it and leaving no value, except for a nice copper-nickel ring.
Nice buck.
no its smooth and slightly rounded, i had to use my cell phone to take the pics,it doesnt appear to be machined in any way
no its smooth and slightly rounded,
That is the definition of spooned.
A true Finned Rim would have the reeds. Any other type of in-collar error would not have rounded edges.
Here are 2 links on how to make a ring and the signs of a failed attempt like the one I believe you have.

If you still feel it is an error try getting better pictures or visiting a coin club or dealer in person.
Hi, I have a Dime from 1998 that the face in nickel and the seal is in cooper. How much its worth?
Dime from 1998 that the face in nickel and the seal is in cooper.
Sounds like a Missing Clad Layer error it's about $50.00 in low mint state.

2002 Canadian dime with a P under the Queen's head. I've heard that some of these can be quite valuable.
No it's just 10 cents.
The one with value is the 2000 P Quarter which is about $5,000.00 high grade.
I have a 1967 dime with a smooth rim. It is the same size as other dimes and does not appear that the ribbing has been rubbed off. It looks like the ribbing was never present. Any idea of how much it may be worth?
1967 dime with a smooth rim. It is the same size as other dimes and does not appear that the ribbing has been rubbed off
Missing Reeded edge is not really possible if the edge was not collared it would be wider than a normal dime.
Sorry but it is just a weak strike or faded
Hi i have a 2002 p dime it is thick all the way around the edge and it is copper color on the edges and smooth looks like the edge of a penny . is it worth anything
2002 p dime it is thick all the way around the edge and it is copper color on the edges and smooth looks like the edge of a penny
This could be a BroadStrike error but this sounds more like damage, no extra value.
it dosent look damaged its perfectly round and smooth
it dosent look damaged its perfectly round and smooth
That is what leads me to believe it is damaged as errors would not be perfectly round or smooth.
A Broadstrike error would be out of shape and tapered.
This sound like spooning, which is when someone smashes the edges usually with a spoon in order to make a ring.
I have a 1998 dime missing the 8. Its just a hair thicker on this edge than regular dimes. the 9 and IN and WE are both faded. Still has ridges, not spooned
I have a 1988 dime where the P is taller than the rest of the raised parts.
1998 dime missing the 8. Its just a hair thicker on this edge than regular dimes. the 9 and IN and WE are both faded
This is normal it is just a weak strike or deteriorated die. No extra value.
1988 dime where the P is taller than the rest of the raised parts.
Normal it probably a repunched mintmark it may have a little extra value but nothing significant.
I have a 1945 dime with the clear letter W on it. I just recently called a couple of credited coin collectors and they told me such coin cant exist. When i had done my research about 6-7 months back, i came upon a web page stating that the coin is very rare and is worth between 10-15 thousand dollars.
1945 dime with the clear letter W on it.
Between the date and the letter Y is the designer's monogram AW.
The AW is on top of each other like the NY Yankees logo, so it looks like a W.
This is common and is only $1.50.
Here is a picture of this common coin, LINK.
i have a 1967 quarter 100% face clad missing appears to be all copper is this worth anything, condition is fair to good, not mint
1967 quarter 100% face clad missing appears to be all copper is this worth anything, condition is fair to good,
About $100.00 in good but if genuine it should be graded to get the most value.
A grade of Almost-uncirculated would double the value.
I have a dime that I think has an error. The dates says 2003 P, but it looks like there's a zero under the 3. Is this an error? What's the value of the coin? Thanks for your help. If you need a photo of the coin, I can e-mail one to you (I don't know how to upload pics here).
2003 P, but it looks like there's a zero under the 3.
This kind of error is not possible.
Try uploading the picture on a free photo site and dropping a link here.
It sounds like damage or a die crack which has no extra value.

Hi. I just copied the link info and typed it here~ hope this works; if not, how can I email you the pictures?
2000 or 2003 dime
I just copied the link info and typed it here~
Nice picture, but those are die cracks looks like it was a deteriorating die.
That has no extra value and is not considered an error.
Thanks for the info, 2003 dime

Hi, I found a 1988 p dime that appears to have 2 ridges around it on both sides of the coin. Would this be an error in the coin, and if so would there be any value in keeping it?

I do not know what company made this but I think it was issued from the 1950s - 1970s.
It's about $1.00 at most.
If I found out more info I will post it.
Hi I found a 1970 Dime with a P stamped right above the date. I was under the impression that this is Philly coin, but it is my understanding that they did not use the P stamp until later?? Can you enlighten me?
1970 Dime with a P stamped right above the date. I was under the impression that this is Philly coin, but it is my understanding that they did not use the P stamp until later?
You are correct the P was not added until 1980 so this is some type of out of mint altered coin.

I have no idea what this is, sorry.
It is not a coin it is most likely a medal or some private round.
Usually these only have metal value.

Sounds like a Missing Clad Layer error, about $15.00.
I have a 1967 roosevelt dime that appears to be all copper. It is in perfect condition, no wear on either side and is less than half the thickness of a regular dime. Can you tell me if you have seen one like it and what it might be worth?
I have a 1959 penny that shows very little or no wear on either side but is half as thick as a regular penny, is smaller in diameter than the regular penny missing most of the rim around the outside and the IN GOD WE TRUST on the face side is very close to the edge of the coin. Have seen one like it? Can you tell me if it has more value than a penny?

Yes, it sounds like a Missing Clad Layer error.
If real about $150.00

Sounds damaged, a coin can not get stamped without a rim, if not it would get bigger not smaller.
Only other option is to have an expert look at it in hand.
i hav a 1960 dime with a smooth edge is it rare if so whats it worth
1960 dime with a smooth edge
Just worn down silver tended to do that about $2.50.
I have a 1998 dime with an edge that's smooth, and it looks like the outside of a penny. The rest of it looks fairly normal (the edges might be a little risen). I'm guessing it isn't worth much, but I figured I would check! Thanks!

Can you tease out a value or shed some light as to what is going on with this coin? Thanks!
strange 2000D smooth edge dime.
It's a fake.
The bad design, the reverse has the wrong font, and the dimples all over indicate a cast coin.
I've seen a fake dime like this only once...
http://www.cointalk.com/t119340/
From what I understand there is a 2004 video out there showing people how to make counterfeit dimes.
Someone in Centre, Alabama made dozens of these and used them at local stores and they started circulation. Most 2000-D.
Check this out.
This is my favorite coin. Beautiful to my eyes. This is not a poor color quality photo. This is the color of the patina. I did not photograph the ridged edge but there is no cladding visible. This appears to be, and I'm asking for ideas here, that the copper core layer was unusually thick.

Looks more like a rusted dime or chemically damage.
That said it should be weighed to see if it is a Missing Clad error.
Hey Man,
Sounds like there are cues to determine why a coin may present differently. Do you know of a budget grade scale to weigh coins? What are the weight standards of coins to determine such differences. Love the science.
Thanks
Do you know of a budget grade scale to weigh coins?
--Amazon sells some I wrote about here...
http://coinedformoney.blogspot.com/2006/07/coin-scale.html
Hopefully they still selling them cheap.
What are the weight standards of coins to determine such differences.
--It should weigh 2.27grams +/- 0.05grams
Any other weight can be an error.
I found a 2002 copper dime and was wondering its value
2002 copper dime
First weigh it to see what type of error this may be.
Got a 1967 quarter, no reeding, raised rim, smaller and thicker than a normal quarter. No signs of spooning at all. The words and date are missing half their height. What is it and any value?
1967 quarter, no reeding, raised rim, smaller and thicker than a normal quarter. No signs of spooning at all. The words and date are missing half their height.
Sounds damaged, I know you're confident it's not spooning but you are describing it.
Any quarter pressed will have reeding and if no reeding-collar is present the coin would be thinner and larger.
Try weighing it, could be off-metal. Also try and get an image online and link here or at a coin forum for more precise opinions.
Take a look at this.
I'll put the link at the bottom.
By the way, thanks for this site. Most posters are like me; don't know much.
I have learned that this is a famous penny mint date and mint location for error; 1969-S.
Now this is not the pristine $100,000+ coin sold at auction (Go here: imageshack.us/photo/my-images/707/1969sdoubleddiepennycen.jpg ) with highly graphic errors, but, there are a number of obvious errors with this average looking circulated coin. That is how it caught my attention.
I'm interested in your take.
I've arrowed the most obvious things I see. What I see is three strikes. The arrow marked #1 is a very fine or soft strike. Number 2 and #3 are obvious. At the top of the coin, I pinpointed the top and bottom of the prominent rim. The top outer edge of the top of the coin drops back down to the depth thickness of the center of the coin.
From the eyes of a neophite, the other arrows show subtle signs of multiple strikes with in the rim of the coin; at least two strikes.

Take a look at this...1969S error?
Looks like a slightly Misaligned Strike error that has no extra value, added to that the damage all over the coin whatever value it could have is gone.
I did scan the coin at 98,000 dpi so you saw every flaw for sure!
Some of us who participate on your site are looking for information. Despite my reference to a valuable coin find, I really don't particularly care that much about the market value of a coin at a dollars and cents level. I'm not looking to win the lottery. I would love to possess an asset, but, for me, and many of us, I think we all enjoy recognizing subtleties; errors in the process.
If we see obvious errors and it's not considered an error, what is an error? Are three rim strikes that unusual? How does that happen? What is a damaged coin? What is it that damages coins? That's the kind of info I am interested in. When you have suggested weighing coins to for confirmation of silver content or lamination issues, that is extremely valuable objective information to all of us who love this.
I did scan the coin at 98,000 dpi so you saw every flaw for sure!
--Unfortunately the details are still very blurry. When coins for details size is most important if you can get a 600x600 image from a coin first then boost the dpi.
A camera is often better to see errors since you can play with the shadows to highlight the error while scanner washes out most details.
If we see obvious errors and it's not considered an error, what is an error?
Are three rim strikes that unusual?
How does that happen?
--Errors on coins are defined by an abnormal incident having occurred during the manufacturing of the coin leaving the coin different from the final normal coin.
That said not all errors are valuable or collectible.
Ex. Machine Doubling = when a coin gets struck additional shifting after the initial strike leaving a slight doubling.
Are three rim strikes that unusual?
--No, Machine Doubling means while the coin is getting struck it may move multiple times.
What is a damaged coin? What is it that damages coins?
--Anything that occurs after minting that alters the coin. Machine Doubling is not a true error since it happens after the initial good strike then it moves. Plus it is common.
Other forms of damage are
cleaning: the fiber in paper scratches the surface of coins.
heat: alters the surface hanging the luster
touching: acid in sweat eats the surface
water: ions and bonding with metal
Your coin may have some type of other error but with the image not being sharp I can only go by what I see and that isn't much.
Good luck with the searching and feel free to keep asking question but I defer to a better Lincoln cent error collector...

Very valuable information. Thank you for your conciseness.
