Die Crack On Dime

Do you have an error coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Generally I look over all my coins but recently I've been really eyeing them like a collector. I here of so many types of coins that at first I ignored them and just collected by year. Now though I'm checking for any little variance.

Towards the end of December I found this dime in my piggy-bank(not actually in the shape of a pig).Notice the arrows are pointing at some raised metal that forms a crack or lightning bolt shape.Upon closer inspection there are actually two cracks.

This is an authentic error.

It is called a die crack because the die used to press the coin cracked and transfered the results on this and probably thousands of others before a mint inspector noticed.

The error coin book classifies this as II-D-1 Die Crack (W), the W stand for "wear" meaning that is how the mistake was formed. This classification is for three or less cracks that don't span the coin.

This particular error is not rare so the value is only twice the face value with only these minor cracks.

Here's the stats...
Type: 10 Cents / II-D-1 Die Crack /2 "light" cracks(1 from rim to center)
Year: 1983-P
Mintage: 647,025,000
Metal: 75% copper 25% nickel(Outer Layers), 100% copper(Inner Core)
Value: EF-40 $0.50

Because the coin is in quite a nice state it may be worth $0.25 and double it for the die crack for a grand total of $0.50. Not much but the first error of this type I recognized and kept.

Do you have an odd coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

268 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

Hello, I think I may be in the right place, finally XD

I found a funky dime today 1985 most of the surface is dark/black yet all the raised areas are clean and shiny. There is a raised circular mark on the front over the 'in god we trust' and on the back at the top of the torch and slightly to the left.

Here's a link to a photo

Curiosity drives me to pester you XD I'd just like to know what's up with this coin ^^

Shot.
Your coin got shot probably by a small gun or high powered pellet gun.

I've seen many shot coins that look lke this, no extra value since it is damaged.

Hi, would you be able to tell me what kind of damage this is on this1985 dime?

How about this one? I've seen it once before. Looks like it could have be damaged by machinery in the mint itself. Guessing by looks maybe by a vaccuum head.

It is damage but probably not from the mint, they do no use vacuum heads.

This is common damage from vending machines or counting machines probably at a bank. Even if this was damaged at the mint it would hold no extra value.

I have a 1980 d dime. The edges are smooth like a penny with line around it(no silver visible on edge). Also very little silver on front and back giving it a greenish brown color like dirty lake water. Can you give me your feedback on it and an approximate value? Thank you.

Damaged normal dime, it sounds like the dime was left in water or buried in the dirt.
No extra value.

This is not a Missing clad error because if one side was missing it would weigh 1.8 grams.

This could be a Improper Annealing error but only an expert can tell.

Sounds like the zinc core is showing through.

If damage no extra value.

If this is results of an Partial Missing Clad Layer error about $1.00 depending on eye appeal.

Spooning is when the edge is smashed in order to make a ring.

This is damaged and has no extra value.

Of course this type of error is not possible, sounds like an altered coin. No extra value.

That said it could be a Die Clash or Multiple Struck error but it needs to be seen to verify.

If you can post pictures online somewhere and link it here that may help.

They average about $5.00 but a lot depends on eye appeal.

Could be a Die Break or Struck Through Grease error but without a clear picture I suspect a bubble formed between the clad layers.

No extra value unless you can prove Die Break. Still not much for that either.

I have a 1954 Dime with a die break on the reverse, olive branch top flower. I would call it a CUD, but from what I've heard a CUD relates to the edge of the coins. This is just fills in the top leaves. AND I have 2 1964 D dimes that possible show a progression is a die crack. Remember the "cracked skull" pennies, this seems to be a cracked skull dime. One crack is a fainter and smaller version of the other. Can either of these solicit a premium?
