Going to change my habits for a while. I will take out some money from the ATM and use it to pay bills in person. Let us see if the ups my chances of finding more coins of interest.
Until then back to the vault with this East Caribbean States dollar. While most of their are not unusual to find in U.S. change the dollar has an odd shape and was from a coin lot.
QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND |
EAST CARIBBEAN STATES 1998 1 ONE DOLLAR 1 (Sir Francis Drake’s Golden Hind at sea) |
Decagonal Coin
This is a ten-sided coin which is kind of unusual for circulating coin. The more sides you put on a coin the more difficult it becomes to mint. Coin blanks should flow smoothly in a radial pattern when pressed but if slightly uneven a circular collar will keep the coins shape. Not as true for other coins.
Coins of lower denominations are almost always circles since they are hardly ever faked. For large denominations like one dollar or more having difficult and odd shape helps prevent counterfeiting. For added security this East Caribbean States dollar also has a fully reeded edge.
Here are the stats for this coin...
Type / Country: 1 Dollar / East Caribbean States
Year: 1998
Mintage: Not known.
Metal: Copper-Nickel
Value: $0.50 in VF (it has a big dent on the Queen's neck)

I do have a Canadian nickel with 10-sided. Is that rare?
It would be since older Canadian nickels are 12-sided, try counting the sides again.
From 1942-1962 they were 12-sided.
I have a question about us currency. Im on the west coast and I've noticed that most of the bills around here are from the fort worth BEP facility. Do you, on the east coast, get mostly DC printed notes? Is this similar to the Denver vs. Philadelphia mint thing? thanks

Just looking at the ten bills I have 6 are FW and 4 are not.
It seems 50/50 to me. Logically we should get lots of NY notes and most are printed in DC. So we should see DC notes more but bills circulate more in NYC so it is almost always even.
Yes, it is 12 sided.Do you know why they made the nickels like that?
Canada needed nickel for WWII so they changed these coins to a metal known a Tombac.
Tombac can tarnish and look like old brown copper, so to stand out against pennies the changed the shape to 12-sided. Know if the 5-cent goes brown you can feel it is not a 1-cent.
After the war the kept the tradition until 1963. At this point it was getting too expensive, since round collars are cheaper and last longer they switched back.

1998 $1 east carribean state 10 sided coin
This is from a 1989-2000 featuring the younger portrait of the queen. Previously it was a round coin they changed it to make it easier to tell from other coins and harder to counterfeit. It's copper-nickel and has the "Golden Hind" ship of Sir Francis Drake.
Value is about $0.50
