Continuing with some decent looking coins from the bag I bought is some from the Bahamas.
While half of the coins were normal circulated types they did include some proofs. Which is not all that great because the circulating issues were actual rarer then the proof. For example the 1972 10 Cents had 11,000 coins minted while the proofs numbered 35,000. It's harder to find a brilliant uncirculated than an untouched proof.

My friend was in urgent need of money so he sold 2 of his silver coins (father's collection) for 100$ to me. He said that he did not know the silver present in the coins but said its value should be more than what I paid him. On one coin there is a picture of pope and church and on top Republic Dominicana is written. The date inscribed is 1979 The words Visita De S.S. Juan Pablo II is inscribed below. on the other side Periodo Presidential Antonio Guzman is inscribed at the top with 25 pesos written below on the left corner plata fina 60.13 grs is written and on bottom right ley.925 is there.The coin has lot of black spots and scratches on surface.

Not rare but not often seen on the market.
At $109 it is slightly high but that is assume it is not graded and if this grades higher than MS-64 it maybe worth more.
It is too close to call, it depends on how much you are willing to spend, I do expect these large silvers to gain value for the next few years.

Good pictures but I'm still stumped.
This is a $1 dollar Bahamas from 1966 but it seems to be made of another material.
This is a Presentation coin, so it may not have been meant for the public. That said 4 postage stamps from that conference and sell for $1.00 in mint condition.
I tried some research but found nothing, it may be plated but it does not look like it.
At this point the only way to find out is to contact the Bahamas Consulate, as they hosted it 1968, and try to proceed from their. Attach the last clear image to an email request.

The reason for going for this set is I found it better value for money as the price I paid for the set is closer to bullion value. Also a some posts back you had mentioned to a query that the value of this set is about 75$.
But now I am having buyer's remorse Should I have bought the costa rica coin for 57$ or Have I made the right decision by going for this set? Which coin/set would appreciate in value in the future? How is the value of a coin determined ? How much premium over the bullion value is justifiable?
I can still return this set and buy Costa rica 25 colones coin but I am not sure whether it is worth paying 25$ premium over the bullion value. Affordability is not a question as I can afford both the coins/set. Which makes better economic and investment sense? Again $80 is just an estimate plus or minus $20 is a good range, just try to make sure the quality and condition are high.

Well that is the problem with collecting, everyone will over pay for coins. I overpaid for a cent by $10 over 15 years ago and it still sells for cheaper.
I use to buy bulk silver dimes and some I got for less but most I overpaid by 10%.
Collecting as investment is not worth it unless you are spending $10,000 or more per coin. Join any serious forum and those guys are trading $20,000 coins and laugh at people who buy stuff ungraded.
Collect for fun or wait until you can afford the "real" coins, me I have stopped buying and just collect from my change.

The weight it right for gold coins but again no RMS Douro bullion coins are listed.

I'm from Germany and due to the death of my grandfather I came into possession of an 1992 100$ silver coin from the Bahamas.
As there is no place on the web, that even showed a picture of that coin, I wanted to ask if anybody ever heard of a 1Kilogramm .999 silver coin from the Bahamas, for the 500year celebration of the discovery of the new world.

I have taken collecting silver foreign coins as a hobby and the first thing that I have done is bought a Krause catalog for my reference. After going through the book I am bamboozled by some information. It would be very helpful if you can provide your insights and views on some of the things.
First of all How is the value of a coin arrived at? I thought the main criteria should be the metal content (gold, silver platinum etc),the mint (private,Govt) and the mintage (especially the serial numbered ones). So as per my logic a coin having the same content say 1 ounce silver but there is a difference in mintage like 1 coin has a mintage of 70000 and the other has mintage of 1000. Then in such a scenario the coin which has a lower mintage should be valued higher.
But in the Krause catalogue I have come across lot of coins which do not follow this logic. Just as a point in case there are many coins which are valued at a price lower than the bullion value. I understand that it is not possible to have the current bullion value in the books as their value differs from time to time but how often are the values revised in newer editions. I have a 2010 krause catalog.
While buying silver coins what things should I keep in mind as I believe the value listed in the Krause is just a reference and not gospel.
I am interested in purchasing 1971 Haiti proof set of 9 coins 10 Gourdes with faces of Indian chiefs. I know their catalog price i.e about $35 each and $315 for the set. But I believe they are highly undervalued as the mintage of each coin is only 3000 odd pieces. So what is a good price for the whole set according to you?
I would also like to purchase the 1970 Costa Rica 1970 5 coin silver proof set consisting of 25,20,10,5 and 2 Colones? What is the value for the whole set? I could not find the value of 20 colones coin in my Krause as it is not listed.

There are many such instances where coins which have less than 5000 mintage does not command a premium price and are undervalued as per the catalog but many coins which are in abundance are higly overpriced.

No. Many coins with low mintage of 50 coins or less are only metal value because they all exist in the same grade and are available on the market frequently or never. So the value is frozen.
1,000 mintage is considered low but not rare.
Krause sets its value on the market, if no one is buying Haitian coins then the market drops and the reflect that price at publishing time.
If suddenly everyone wants a Haitian coin the market gets inflated and the book looks wrong.
Silver is hard to track because in a single year the value doubles so again a good rule is find out the books I think they used $11.50 while today it's $17.71.

These coins have about $240 in silver and the general rule is about 33% for semi-low mintage which would make it $319 so that is about right.
The key is market where else can you buy these, if no ebay or Heritage listing exist you may have to pay double silver value but this would be way overpriced at $480.

For the set about $250.00 although I have seen them sell for half that. Again the semi-low mintage is not impacting instead the silver value is dominant.

These are 5oz coins and they are very collectible. More people want the 5oz coin than the 5 Pound 1oz coin which may have a lower mintage.
Because it is market driven, large coins, odd shapes, and cool designs often sell higher than the mintage indicates.
Am I missing something?
Lastly, with the overpriced items just check online or in forums to see if they are going for less.
With the undervalue be aware that it is about popularity, availability, and grade. If only 10 coins were made but all are perfect and owned by one person they have little market value.
Some coins like 1983 U.S. quarters are very common but few of them achieved high grades so they command a 10x higher value.

Is it worth investing in a coin/coin set if it is available for a higher price as compared to the market value of the coin/coin set mentioned in Krause catalog but the price is equal to the bullion value (gold/silver). I am intersted in collecting only gold or silver foreign coins. Can I go wrong if I buy or purchase a coin / coin set for the price equal or less than the bullion value irrespective of the catalogue value? For Eg Recently I won the following 4 coin/sets
1976 Maurituius 2 coin proof set 25 and 50 rupees 1.88oz asw for $30

True but I'm a coin collector and the idea of melting coins rare, proof, or mint set coins seems wrong.I don't believe in coins as a long term investment.
That said it is possible to lose money if bullion value drops low which may happens soon.

My friend won the 1967 Haiti 3 coin set on ebay for $90 in original box and COA but the coins were handled and there are minor scratches on all the 3 coins.
Did I pay a fair price or overpaid for my set or Did my friend won the item for a good price. What is the present value of these 2 sets? Does the value depreciate if the coins are handled or there are scratches on the coins as compared to ones which are blemish free? Thanks

The scratched coins should have sold for $50 or whatever the melt value was.

I also believed that the coins lose their value if they are handled and there are scratches on the coins. But the Funny thing in this case is I checked the metal content in Krause catalogue today and Both the 1967 and 1968 Haiti 3 coin set contain 6.04 ASW which brings the melt value of the coins in each set to approx 110$ as per today's bullion rate which is more than the catalogue value of the pristine sets and the price $90 which my friend paid. So in effect it looks like my friend won the set at a bargain price because he has in effect paid less than the present silver value in the set even though there are scratches on the coins. It's quite hilarious but so true. Thanks for your input.

Yes that old silver melt value, which in theory sounds good.
Remember that even people who buy silver need to make a profit so $110 in silver will sell for less. In Jan 2010 silver was about $19 then by Feb it was about $15.
In my tiny opinion I would sell the scratched coins the second I could get a decent profit.

3 Silver proof coins from Kenya in original Royal Mint boxes for sale on ebay with a starting bid of $45
The coins are as follows:

I researched for the value of these coins in the Krause catalogue and I was shocked to see the Catalogue value of each of these coins:-
$350 plus $375 plus $500 = $1225 which looks absolutely crazy in my opinion. I couldn't believe my eyes.
Can you please shed some light on what is so special about these coins and why are these coins so highly valued in Krause. Their mintages are unknown. What is the maximum price you would be willing to shell out for these coins? Would any person be able to fetch the price of their catalogue value in the open market? Thank you

These coins are thought to have a very low mintage. Add to that in Kenya most were melted for the silver content. They are seldom seen in auction and all African proofs have a premium because of the instability of each country.
All that said when these are sold the average sale is half the book value.

It is a 1976 set, the 1973 is just part of the design not the year of the coin.

I calibrated my scale and checked other coins -- all good. Have others found the tolerance high on these coins?

True on silver coins tolerance should not be over 0.05 grams for each 10 grams.
That said these are low value coins and I never heard of any fakes.
It could be oxidation or something else at the time of minting but I do not suspect fakes.

What I suspect is they were re-plated.
Meaning they got ugly, someone cleaned them and then plated them in silver to get a higher grade.
It adds some weight and would only be detected with a high power microscope and some metallurgy background.
Interesting, thanks. I mistyped on the $5 coin: it's actually over by 1.6 grams. I'm fairly new to silver, but these coins look like proofs to me, including the frosting. And they are not perfect proofs -- some minor signs of wear. Would a re-plater be able to get that frosted effect? In any case, re-plating would at least ensure silver value.

It is possible, frosting is easy enough to do.
But to go through all that trouble seems odd.
There are so many techniques to plate coins and also the 1970s were not known for producing perfect coins so it is difficult to pinpoint.
You can try going to a jeweler and see if they can verify silver content (in a non-destructive way).
Or try to find the specific gravity of the coin to then scientifically breakdown it's content, I'm an engineer by trade and even this is a bit difficult.
I would accept them as slightly heavy and keep them aside in case other ever get reported.
I weighed ten more 1974-75 Franklin Mint coins last night (I have a Lighthouse scale). Most of the coins were from the Bahamas. I also compared my measurements to other world coins -- Canada, Germany, Netherlands, etc. It seems clear to me that the tolerance on these Franklin Mint coins is much higher than most coins. One 1975 50c piece was .75 grams too light, while the 1975 $1 coin was 1.03 grams too heavy! A few others fell into 0.5-1 gram off range, though on the heavy side, and some were very close. They just bounced around more than one would expect. However, they all look and sound authentic, rims and other details look perfect to me; some were starting to tone. My guess is the Franklin Mint did not care that much about the variances.

True I would think once they got the correct amount of silver whatever fill metal they used, copper at 1-2%, they just added it until the blank stayed stable.

I am very new to this hobby of collecting only silver coins. I wanted to clarify and clear some things so I will be putting across my queries in paragraph form so that it would be easier for you to answer them.
After how many months or years does toning start to occur on silver coins? Does it occur on all silver coins (.999 , .90 , sterling etc)? If the coins are sealed in the original sealed plastic case of issue or plastic capsule would toning still occur? What temperature or climate affects toning? Is toning good on the coins or bad? Should the coins which are toned be cleaned or left alone? Would the value of the coins depreciate because of toning?
I had recently won some coin sets on ebay. In the case of British Virgin Island 1985 Twenty Five coin set, the coins are not sealed but just placed on some velvet lined coin slots in the case, still there are no visible signs of toning on them and coins are very lustrous. On the other hand a 1968 3 coin Haiti set in original case which I had won has some noticeable toning starting to occur on the edges of the coins.
I recently also won a 1973 haiti 4 coin set for $36. It was sealed in an original plastic sleeve but it did not come with outer black case and COA. Also there is no tarnishing whatsoever on the coins and it has a white lustre. How can I check whether the coins are authentic or counterfeit? Should I remove them from their original sealed plastic sleeve? Are there any instances of counterfeits of these coins? Also I am now seeing another seller selling similar coins which are sealed but in this case the coins have noticeable tarnishing.
One more thing I wanted to be sure of are Did the 1973 Haiti 4 coin set come with 2 different types of packaging as on One sellers plastic sleeve IC is embossed at 2 ends while a set which another seller is selling there is no such embossing on the ends. The set which I won also does not have this 'IC' embossing.

Never heard of fake for that set.
As for the coins in plastic occasionally some people take them out and then put in lesser grade coins then the reseal the plastic.
This paranoia of yours is justified because when getting eBay items you can never be sure.
With foreign coins they often have multiple package types so I can't say if one has been tampered with.

I did answer this, toning can take up to 50 years, if properly sealed and kept in low humidity then it may stay that way for centuries.

They should stay in the package and maybe looking under high magnification for bubbles or weak details. If not then they are most likely real, like you said why bother faking for low value coins.

Visit and join a few coin forums and from there you can make contacts that will sell directly.

Well it looks like bearing the 1974 Belize proof set, I have done pretty well with other purchases taking into account the catalogue value. Can you please explain the reason for the Belize set being so undervalued? It contains approx 3 plus ounces of silver which taking into account the price of silver which is close to $23 the bullion value of the set alone comes to about $70.

My bad there are 2 eight coin sets I looked at the wrong one the PS1 has no silver.
PS2 has the silver and it's about $80 on average.
I will add I'm listing the average low values from actual auctions. Meaning a lot of these coins are selling for twice the value.
Like the 2004 1.5 French Euro goes for $100 on eBay while a month ago it was $55, I tend to think it is lower because the price jumped to fast. I could be off. Good luck.

If you can hold on to them for a few years or if you know of radar collectors.
It is right on the edge of a good deal, there are so many uncirculated $2 packs floating around that they are losing value. If you can afford it go for it but in a few months it may be selling for the same price. Go with your gut is the best advice. Sorry if this was not too helpful.

If you have a bank account ask your bank if the exchange money.
Most money exchangers only deal in bills but you can call and ask.
Worst case scenario is sell them on eBay.

I recently purchased a pristine 1968 Haiti 3 coin set from ebay for $130 in original case and COA which even looked so in the photos. But when I received the set and on closer inspection I found out that the 10 Gourdes coin has a 2-3 inches long light hairline on it and the 25 Gourdes coin also has a couple of very small scratches on it.
I questioned the seller whether he had removed and handled the coins by taking them out of the original case and he replied in the negative saying that he had never removed them. He also offered to take back the set if I was not satisfied with it.
The problem is as follows:-
This set which contains approx 6 ounces of silver retails at a price between $150 to $200. I got the set at a very good price.
Is it possible that a hairline on a coin/coins is from the mint while manufacturing and/or packing the coins and not due to tampering by humans later?
It is a very light hairline on the 10 Gourdes coin which is only visible from some angles on closer inspection and not deep scratches or dent. The whole set looks gorgeous in general and has great eye appeal.
By how much value does the price of a set decrease due to the presence of such a hairline on the coin? I understand that the exact condition of the coin whether there is presence of hairline, scratches, dents etc determines its value.
How much importance should be given to the condition of the coins? If there is even a slight anamoly in the condition of the coin eg. light scratch should these coins be avoided? Do collectors only collect coins which are absolutely perfect free of any defects whatsoever.

Proofs are graded harshly with these types of scratches they will always grade low.
So they only have silver value but that is still high and by 2011 silver will go up sharply again so keep these coins.
I think these coins have been opened at least the ends and dirt has gotten inside. As a collectible these have little value since they are also the most common of the Haitian sets.
Still they're keepers.

I calcualted that to be current silver value (29.13 oz). Then I see an ad for 1974 set fr buy it now at $45. I think, is this a mistake? I can't believe it's a mistake. Then after finding you (on the 40th search effort), I read you say there were different sets issued each year, some silver, some not. So now I'm smarter.

The 1971 silver set does contain 9 coins some of them are silver your estimates are correct.
But the 1974 Mint set contains only nickel version.
But the 1974 Proof set contains silver versions.
It seems these sets are real and full just the lesser mint (nickel) version.

I have a 25 pence coin from great britian which was purchased by me about 8 years back from a coin shop. The coin dealer sold me the coin saying it contained silver. I took his word for granted and purchased the coin and kept it with me until now. I now plan on selling this coin on ebay and on doing research about this coin before selling I have found out that there are 2 versions of this coin one is the silver version and another is the copper nickel. How do I find out that the coin that I have is the silver version or not? I do not want to list the coin as silver without being 100% sure of it. The coin does not have a proof finish and looks uncirculated .Does the silver coin minted in this case have a proof finish? Could it be that I have a cupro nickel version?

The coin does not have a proof finish and looks uncirculated.
And that is the problem as far as I know the silver version is always Proof.
There are 3 versions the 2 you listed and a specimen version also cupro-nickel it is not proof but slightly shinier but still uncirculated. It has a slightly higher value but not much. These are often confused with silver because they came in a fancy folder.
Again the silver version is proof and should be in a case. Weight is identical, silver does have a different look to some people.

Also I got the coin from the dealer without the case and the certificate so the case logic with the proof version is ruled out. Nothing that doesn't involve nitric acid.
I know silver coins by look.
Other people can hear the difference between silver coins when drop them on the ground.
Place a picture online and maybe other people (including myself) can tell if it is proof.
If your honest with your description that you simply do not know then your eBay buyers should be understanding.

I have 7 Bahamian Coins from 1966:
1, 5, 10, 15 Cent and
50 cent, 1 dollar and 2 dollar.
They were framed so they are tarnished and circulated. They were framed and attached with what I think is rubber cement since it peeled off very easily, I heated the backing with a dryer to get them off. Any idea of value and if it is advisable to try and clean them, and if yes on cleaning, anything I should try to use that is gentle just to get the remaining glue residue off.
7 Bahamian Coins from 1966:
1, 5, 10 about $0.05 each
15 Cent about $0.50
50 cent($8), 1 dollar($15) and 2 dollar($27) (all of these 92.5% silver)
They were framed so they are tarnished and circulated.
Tarnish is not a bad thing to collectors, bad cleaning is worse.
Since some are silver I would suggest not cleaning them at all but all are still common, they generally have just metal value which I listed.
Dipping them in pure acetone and rinsing with distilled water is the safest way.

Is this set not an official set as it comes in a wooden case with COA and booklet? By which mint was this set issued or Was it issued by a private mint? Also I borrowed a krause catalog from my friend and as mentioned by you there is no mention of the 4 crowns gold coin in the catalogue. What might be the possible reason for the same? Also I am happy that I was able to get the set for less than the bullion value. The catalogue value of this set as mentioned by you is above $700. But I find it weird that there is no mention of this set in the proof sets listed in Krause. Any reason why it was omitted? Are all proof sets normally listed or Is it possible for some sets to be not listed? The 3 Silver coloured coins are listed separately.

Souvenir sets are often not listed since they can be custom made by the mint to whomever sells them. (Which is also why mintage figures are often missing in coin books)
Meaning a zoo may order just the silver birds in separate cases for there less affluent customer.
While a museum may order all 3 plus a gold because they sell higher end items.
Back to your coins, yes the silver bird coins are real they came with the booklet whether you bought one or all three.
The one picture you have of the front of the gold coin is not clear.
That said Stacks sold one set in 2007 and they listed it as PS-18 and the gold coin as KM-137 which according to all my books do not exist.
Heritage sold a set also and the call the 4 crown "unlisted".
I can only guess the coins ere special orders.
Does the booklet mention the gold?

Two reasons
1. they made 1,500 and any unsold were melted without collecting the sets sold.
2. this was the 1st shipment and maybe they were so popular more were made at a later date.

I have just found a 1966 Bahama Islands quarter withe ship on the reverse side and Queen Elizabeth 11 on the other side, but doesn't say Commonwealth of the Bahama Islands, just Queen Elizabeth on left side and Bahama Islands on right side of Queen. I have come across a Bahama Islands 1966 quarter, which has the ship on one side and the Quenn on the other, however it doesnt look like the one you have pic of up above....mine says on left side of Queen her name and on right side of Queen Bahama Islands, NOT Commonwealth of the Bahama Islands like ones above do...just wondering if any info regarding this quarter ( How many made )...Value, History of this year pertaining to quarter.....Quarter in almost mint condition.

I have never found one of these quarters ever, just wondering the value of such quarter...good condition

About $200.00 this is mostly collectors value since the was a low 4,250.
The silver value is about $100 so recent auctions have been between $100 to $200.
The price of $135 is fair but I think it can sell for higher.
1969 Bahama nine piece proof set; Royal Mint; in a red case with felt inlay for coins. Coins are in a plastic wrapper which is torn in spots which in turn has caused a bit of discoloration on the largest coin. Otherwise the rest of the coins are in perfect shape. Value?
