Finally I Got A Star

Do you have an star note and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

While I'm happy so many people are finding star notes it has been a while since I got one. Mostly since I hardly use cash anymore.

Then on September 25 I got this bill in my change. It is a 2003A F-Atlanta series star note.

The back is normal as you can tell.

The star note is a replacement note used by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing when a defect or error is found on the regular run of notes. There is no replacement of specific serial number instead they replace blocks of notes with the newest star notes. Since less then 1% of notes need replacement star notes are scarce.

Still they are not rare since they are printed by the hundred thousand or million. They are printed in runs of a specific amount and the lower the run the more it is worth to collectors.
  • Less than 320,000 printed is lowest.
  • Exactly 320,000 printed is very-low.
  • Between 320,000 and 640,000 is low.
  • Exactly 640,000 is medium.
  • More than 640,000 is high and normal.

Type/Country: 1 Dollar/United States
Year: 2003A
Printings: 3,200,000
Run: 4th from F09600001* - F12800000*
Value: $2.50 in VF

It has plenty of folds and is probably worth less then listed, but that is true with most collectibles.

Do you have currency and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

1663 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

I have a $20 2006 IF04978148* and a $100 2001 CF04095852* both in very fine condition. I would love to hear what they are worth! Also where might one go to sell at such a price? Thanks!

Man said...

both in very fine condition
$20 2006 IF04978148* about $22.00
$100 2001 CF04095852* about $115.00

Both are very common and unless you are good at eBay it would be better to either save them and wait for 30 years. Or just use them to buy silver or gold or just food.

Hi,
I have 6 2006 series $100 star notes in sequential order serial numbers HL16451701* through HL16451706*

Curious as to what if any extra value they have.
Thanks

In regards to above post, they are all in crisp uncirculated condition. The backs of some show some ink smudging along the bottom edge as well as some bleed through of ink from the front printing.

Thanks.

The Minor Offset Transfer errors should not change value, although it does depend on eye appeal I'm assuming it's very minor not 50%-100% offset.

About $160.00 each.

When you estimate a value, does your value include face value or the value above face value? ie: if you say a dollar bill is worth $1.50 is that $1.50 total or $1.50 + $1.00?

It includes face value.
So a dollar bill that is worth $1.50 total.

Hello again. I love that I found your site.
I also have the following silver dollars:
1902
1900 (smooth)
1883 (mostly smooth)
1889

Also, a 1937 five-cent piece that is the size of a silver dollar - with a Native American on the head and a buffalo on the tail side.

Any idea of the value of any of these coins?

Additionally, I have a handful of change that seems to be made out of real silver.
1948 quarter
1964 quarter
1989 quarter (possibly not silver, but has a different feel to it than regular quarters)

1964 dime
1965 nickel
2000 nickel (again, not sure if silver, but feels/sounds different)
1961 nickel
1964 nickel

would love to know value, if any, of these coins as well.

Thanks!!!

Honestly the library or bookstore.

Dealers and shops will give you the lowest value for obvious reasons.

Pick up Standard Guide to Small-Size U.S. Paper Money 10th edition is current.

If you want you can list them here just need the denomination, year, serial number.
For example:
$10 1934-C green X48889292A
$2 1963 red *000194341A
$5 1934 blue R948258208A

I suggest buy the book this way you have a real reference guide with you all the time.

--It indicates a change in design.
No letter means the design is the first in a series the if there is a minor change a letter is added, A, B, C...
If a major change is is added in the design the just use the current year, 2003, 2003-A, 2006, 2009.

For 2003-A Treasurer Anna Escobedo replaced the Rosario Marin signature.

Hi there...
I have a 1934 B series $10.00 bill. It is flat crisp with no folds but has the yellow marker line from a cashier making sure it was not fake. The front is miscut so that the very bottom frame line is touching the edge but no part of the design is actually cut off. The design is just slightly angled up with the right side higher. Back is aligned. #E16496201B green seal. E seal says Richmond Virginia Was just curious if it was worth more than $10? Thanks so very much for your time.

If I was looking to sell it how would I go about it?

You can try auction sites like Heritage.

Coin forums are a good place to sell to private dealers.

Some online companies buy and sell notes... http://usrarecurrency.com and http://www.iccurrency.com/index.html

This could be a very valuable note, the best bet is to have it graded by PCGS for a fee. During that time it takes for grading just visit and email as many different places to see who will give you the most for this note.

If all that sounds like too much toss it up on eBay with great pictures and set a reasonably high value.

2006 new york star notes with the mismatched serial numbers?
its serial on the left side is B06713925* and the right side is B26713925*

These are known and to quote one site "many (likely all) of the notes with serials B 067 00001 * through B 067 20000 * are mismatched serial errors: In the right-hand serial number, the first digit '0' is replaced by a '2'."

So initially they were going for $2,500+
As more have been found they are $1,000+ depending on grade.

Oh about the mismatched serials there may be up to 20,000 of this error.

thank you for the two estimates you gave me about my 2 $100 star bills, can I ask, which I am sure this is answered somewhere in this blog, but how do you get to your price?

Is there a general rule of thumb?

Thanks again!

Sort of, star notes have the most value if they were printed in 320,000 or less.

640,000 or more means it is common so these are generally 10% above face value.

Value depends on how many were printed, graded notes listed by companies, and current auctions. Average these out and you get a good estimate.

And how do you know how many were printed?

Or does it go by Serial number?

Say if it was HB00050502 would that mean that less than 320,000 were printed?

And would HB0456599 mean that more than 320,000 were made?

Thanks Again!

--The government releases production figures every month. It's online on the Treasury website.

Or does it go by Serial number?
--Not really, they often skip numbers.

Say if it was HB00050502 would that mean that less than 320,000 were printed?
--No this run could have 6,400,000.

And would HB0456599 mean that more than 320,000 were made?
--Not always, sometimes a short run is E03200001* to E03520000* and this short run would have extra value. While E00000001*-E03200000* is common.

Recheck serial number and can you give year? 2003? 2003-A?
