While I'm happy so many people are finding star notes it has been a while since I got one. Mostly since I hardly use cash anymore.
Then on September 25 I got this bill in my change. It is a 2003A F-Atlanta series star note.
The back is normal as you can tell.
The star note is a replacement note used by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing when a defect or error is found on the regular run of notes. There is no replacement of specific serial number instead they replace blocks of notes with the newest star notes. Since less then 1% of notes need replacement star notes are scarce.Still they are not rare since they are printed by the hundred thousand or million. They are printed in runs of a specific amount and the lower the run the more it is worth to collectors.
- Less than 320,000 printed is lowest.
- Exactly 320,000 printed is very-low.
- Between 320,000 and 640,000 is low.
- Exactly 640,000 is medium.
- More than 640,000 is high and normal.

It has plenty of folds and is probably worth less then listed, but that is true with most collectibles.

I have a 1991 P quarter with a date of only "91". I noticed it as I was depositing my quarters in to a coin operated washing machine. Is this worth anything or should I just use it next time I need to do laundry? :-)
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like it was struck through grease. While it is a true error it is very common and does not bring any extra value.
ReplyDeleteI have several 2$ bills that my grandad gave me years ago. they have been kept in a plastic bag since then so they are in perfect condition (they actually stick together because they are so new).

If it is crisp-uncirculated it is about $35.00. The low serial number and repeating digits may bring more to some collectors but those guys are hard to find.
Don't feel bad if you have to use it but if you can you may want to save it for a few years until the new $20 comes out.

Any price range between $112-$225 is fair.

Few bills after 1950 are worth anything significant unless they are in Choice Crisp-Uncirculated(CH-CU).
Still a nice start.

ReplyDeleteYes this is an Overprint On Back error. It is about $450.00 in extra-fine. There is a famous 1985 version that is in all the error currency books.

In the condition you describe they are about $15.00 each. There are no valuable serials, unless the number is real low or repeating or some other cool pattern then add about $5.00 more.
63,360,000 were made they were the last red seals and are often found in high grades.
If you can confirm a grade of CH-CU then it would be $30.00 each.

ReplyDeleteMy husband gave me a stack of money that his grandfather had been saving. A handful are as new as 1963, the rest are between 1934-1950. I was stuck in a bind, as I just got to NY from overseas on Sunday, and I spent a 1963 $20, two 1963 $1 and a 1950 $5 at a CVS in Soho on Sunday 16 December... Maybe you'll get lucky and find them! Nonetheless, I have the rest of the stack left and sorted into order. I'd like to know where I can sell these, and what the best way is. I am in New York now. I would list them here, but I have about $400 worth of 1, 5, 10, 20 notes, and it's too many to list... Most are VF, some have consecutive serial numbers, a few 'almost' uncirculated (because it's clear he got them from the bank then kept them). Thanks for your help.

These can be very valuable.

Unless in near perfect condition you did not lose anything special.
Selling them is difficult in NY I tried and failed. Also since eBay many of the places I knew of are now closed.
Your best bet is eBay or a currency show or join a forum that sells among the members.
Coin shops will give you 20%-40% less then the resell value. But eBay charges listing fees.
Before all that you need to find the approximate values of each bill.

$10 1934B Blue seal is one that may be worth grading before selling PCGS is a grading service that can help. A high grade will double the value.
Any other I valued over $50 is worth a holding on to as these tend to grow in price. The rest you can sell as a collection expect to get anywhere from 20% above or below there value.

Printing appears off center on both sides (but image is not cropped on either side - comes to about 1/16" from image to paper edge on top and left, 1/8" bot 1/4" right) on front, with visible crop/cut marks on bottom and right corner. J225 front, 1648 back) that's higher than the high value ones you listed. Same for the other note, $5 1934D T 92132293 A BLUE which has a front of A2101 and back of 1992.
Is PCGS the most reputable currency grading service? I will send the $10 to them for grading, and will return the ones you listed above $50 to the safe...
The rest of the collection I guess I will photograph and sell as a collection-- would you suggest the best place as e-bay to sell as a collection, or...?

PCGS has a forum with many currency collectors if your email is working you should join first and ask them more since they have experience sending stuff to grade.
I assumed this note was near perfect.
Here is a site selling notes SELLER
a note similar to yours is listed second, they have a picture of it. It's a good judge on what a graded notes look like.
If you hook up with a forum they can buy some notes but eBay is always a safe bet.
PMG does have a list of "approved" note dealers. Maybe one is in your area.
You also may want to scan/photograph the 1934B $10 note for your records also to show other because with a good picture you can estimate a grade online.

ReplyDeletethanks for your information. i will check these out. the note on the site looks a lot like one i have, but a little less perfect around the edges because of how it was stored. i do have some that are more 'near perfect', like the sequential notes, but since i am not familiar with different grades, i couldn't tell you what state it's in. it has no stain, the one in the picture is stained by the upper right number on the front. there is that faint line on the front of mine (but nothing on the back, so it hasn't been folded or creased, nor has it been steamed or anything). i will read through your suggestions and see what i come up with and report back to you, for curiosity sake. i see that the seller still has his listed at $2150... mine should not be less than very fine, but i understand that a lot of factors go into the grading, not just whether it's pristine... so

If the back number is 585 or higher it is about $50.00.
If the back number is 584 or lower it is about $150.00.

Unfortunately these are not special, just the opposite they are the most common $100 note ever.
2,325,600,000 were printed which is why that letter goes A to X even to Y.
So even a slight fold would make this worth only $100.

This is common and unless the serial number completely covers the signature it won't be worth anything extra.

In crisp-uncirculated it is about $325.00.
According to the book the highest found was H00516252* yours would be a new high number and may bring extra value in certain auctions if certified.

Second I'm assuming a Misaligned Overprint which means the serial numbers and seal are off center.
If you mean the entire note is too close to the edge but the design is not cut-off then it's just $35.00.

As you may know only 9,600 were made so it will become more sort after.
I would get them if I could afford them, but don't expect the book value to catch up for another ten years. Some buyers only buy using book prices.
This one is an exception but usually it is better to go for the highest grade.

ReplyDeleteActually it is known as a Mule where the back number is a different size then the front number. Usually a small print back number and a larger print front number.
For this series the back number has to be 585 or higher.
Yours should be a series 1934 Light Vivid Yellow-Green Seal and in very fine it's about $20.00.

Dates are tracked by the government but it can be deciphered by the serial number and signatures.
Your bill has a back number higher than 588 so it had a "new back" which started July 27, 1948 and ended in May 1949.
The state should be on the seal with the big B, New York.
The green seal says THESAUR AMER. SEPTENT SIGIL which means The Seal of the Treasury of North America.

ReplyDeleteYes but for grading purpose uncirculated means the status of the paper.
Your bill it was printed in October of 2006 and needs to be perfect, well-centered, no stains, and no folds or corner folds. They come out of the brick like this.
I did a quick eBay search for '$100 star note 2003a' and there only 2 up there in less then ideal shape for less then $200 with no bids.
It might take a few years before they realize their full value.

It will probably never go over $110 because of the folds. Plus of the DK-* this is the most common. With a run of 1,280,000.
Small runs of 320,000 are the ones that go up in value. But if you can afford to keep it fine but no big loss if you want to use it.

In crisp-uncirculated they're about $100.00 each.
Selling them is a problem since they're a common star note. A coin dealer may give you $60-$80 per note if near perfect.
Your best chance is eBay or join a coin forum and sell them to someone who is looking for these particular notes.

I have a 1963 series one dollar bill, A 00004474 * fair condition. I don't know how to grade condition but it has creases, slight fraying on the top and bottom edges and it looks like it may have been ironed.

I'm a cashier... would it be wise to buy currency with unique numbers when I'm working with new bank currency?

both are crisp and clean - no folds.
These would be odd number notes and may bring extra value to the right collector but generally are not fancy enough for most.
Fancy number notes that are crisp do well for example an $1 F88888888A sold for $2,000.00.
Ebay is a good indicator on what's selling. So if you have the money to buy it from your register and are good at selling then go for it.

ReplyDelete1) I have two $100 bills with the star note. One of them is series 2001 and numbered CE00992961*. The second is series 2003 and numbered DK01109629*.
ReplyDelete2) I have a $20 bill with a number of: EA88553388E. All the numbers can mathmatically equal 8's.
3) I have a third $100 bill which has what looks like a small fruit stamp on the right side. The ink is similar in color to the ink of the bill as also does not bleed through to the opposite side of the bill.
Any thoughts to the values of these bills?

This is a counter stamp used in other countries to verify that the U.S. bill is real. No extra value.
I have a 1935F $1 Silver Certificate with a * before the serial number. It has "P" mint (I think) can you give me any information?
