I'm checking all the blogs that link to this in the hope of reading something interesting while in class. Then low and behold the first linker was another New York blogger who was doing a little experiment.
He decided to pick up every coin he saw on the streets for a few months. Along the way he found plenty of pennies, a 1944 cent and a $5.00 bill, twice.
I commented to him that I doing the same only around my college and found 37¢, but the same day while on the subway I found two 1 dollar bills in a bundle on the platform. Now I don't know if it was luck or just that reading his blog made me hyper-aware.
I did spot a penny on the platform a couple feet away but I have my limits and left it there for some braver soul to pick up.
Just thinking about this I must have passed up hundreds of dollars in street money throughout the years. Is this just a New York thing?
Do you have a coin/bill and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.
95 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:
i guess subway platforms are the hottest places to find pennies
I have a 1958 Denver Wheatback Penny that is in pretty good shape. I would like to know the value if you can tell me.
Even in great condition a 1958D cent is only worth $0.20.
Unless it has been graded by a professional company at MS-69 or higher it is currently not worth much above face.
How about a 1951D cent? It hasn't been graded, nor would I know where to get it graded. It's dark dark brown in some places and looks a little scratched, but all of the letters/numbers are clear and Linc isn't really worn ...
The scratches even if only tiny kill all value so just for the copper value it's $0.03.
hello my name is EJ and i live in Ontario, Canada and i have a delama! i have a 1945 nickel with a, V and a tourch in the middle on the reverse, and on the other side it says, georgivs VI-D:Grex et ind:imp: at it has his picture. i was woundering how much it is worth.

Type/Country: 5 Cents/Canada
Year: 1945
Mintages: 18,893,216
Metal: Steel with nickel and chromium plating
Value: $1.00-Canadian Dollar or $0.80-US Dollar in EF-40
This victory design nickel is common and in Mint State condition it is worth $4.00 if graded highly by a professional it may fetch $75.00 otherwise only a few bucks.
I have a 1945 Penny. I have heard that if you find old pennies they are worth good money. I would like to know the value, can you tell me?
Sorry a 1945 penny is not very valuable unless it is perfect, new and red. Even perfect it is only a few bucks.
The average 1945 penny is worth $0.10.
Old pennies to look out for are pre-1930's or any one with errors.
I have a number of Canadian five cent pieces with the Sudbury Nickel Smelter on them. Dated 1751 - 1951.
Can you tell me what they are worth today?
Canadian Sudbury Nickel Dated 1751-1951.
In fine condition only $0.25.
hi there i'm not sure whether or not this is the right place to post this but i've recently come across a 1976 penny that is not copper. it has queen elizabeth 2 on one side and maple leafs on the other side...can you tell me anything about this penny?
It's a Canadian cent worth about $0.02 in average condition.
701,122,890 were minted so it is quite common.
i found a copper 1944 penny...whats it worth?????
1944 penny
About $0.10 in very-fine or better.
Most though average $0.03.
Hi,
My daugther found a Canadian penny in her collection that has no date. It has the typical Queen Elizabeth photo on the other side and the maple leaf.
Do you have any info on these pennies?
Thanks,
Found a penny
Canadian penny in her collection that has no date
The only one that has a date on the Queen side is the 2002. It is blank on the Maple side but has 1952-2002 on the other side.
All coins must have dates but some times grease can block the date and this would be an error but only a minor one worth less then a quarter.
I'd have to see it to make sure.
I recently found a stack of money from US, among other countries, but the thing I'm the most interested in is a $20 bill dated September 2, 1861. I found yen, franks, money from Saudi Arabia, Korea, and one fairly large bill that is brown with a man wearing combat medals on it. The value says 10, and the wording looks almost Arabic. The US money I found includes a $2 from 1976, one from 1952, silver certificates from 1951,all in excellent condition. Can you help me out with the values of some of these?
$20 bill dated September 2, 1861
If Confederate about $1,000.00
If United States about $6,000.00
Many fakes exist.
The US money I found includes a
$2 from 1976, about $6.00
one from 1952, no such thing
silver certificates from 1951,no such thing
1950, 1953, 1957 are the years for most U.S. bills of that time.
The other notes from around the world average $10.00 in excellent if they are before 1944. After 1944 the are usually only a few cents.
Without detail descriptions or pictures it is hard to identify notes. Sorry.
I have a 1944D penny and i need to know the value to it and where i can find a buyer?
1944D penny and i need to know the value to it and where i can find a buyer?
In fine condition it is about $0.03 on eBay they hardly sell, no coin shop would buy it unless you had a hundred.
I found a coin in the garden that I can't find on the internet. It is VERY thin, somewhat worn, hard to read because it needs some serious cleaning though I'm not sure what to clean it with that wont cause damage. It has Queen Elizabeths head on both sides, facing different directions. There is no date and it says on both sides "QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND" rounding the edges of the coin.
Queen Elizabeths head on both sides, facing different directions.
There are to many Queen Elizabeths coins to guess.
Since it was in the dirt one way some coin collectors clean the coin is to place it in a potato.
Do a Google search for
'potato coin cleaning'
and you'll get some good advice from ebay.
I have a penny from 1930 with an S under the date. How much is it worth?
I also have a 20 dollar bill from 1951.
penny from 1930 with an S
About $0.20 in good.
20 dollar bill from 1951.
No such thing in the U.S. it has to be 1950 or some other date.
I have a 5 dollar bill made in 1951. I cant find my answer on the internet
5 dollar bill made in 1951
What country? What design?
I have a canadian nickel with 1751-1951 on it.Is it worth anything?
canadian nickel with 1751-1951 about $0.10
I found a 2005 Canadian Penny with a silvery alloy (nickel or steel I would presume) sandwiched in the outer ring but only visible from the coin faces - viewed laterally, there is no indication it is anything but an ordinary one cent piece.
2005 Canadian Penny with a silvery alloy (nickel or steel I would presume) sandwiched in the outer ring but only visible from the coin faces - viewed laterally, there is no indication it is anything but an ordinary one cent piece.
That is the steel core coming out, this is an error but so minor that it usually does not any extra value.
I would hold on to it and keep looking on eBay to see if these eventual become collectible.
My son and I were looking through a roll of new 2009 Lincoln cents. One coin caught our eye because it sparkled a lot more than all of the other brand new pennies. A scan shows a sort of stippling or spray of dots all over the front of the coin. Does something like the have the potential to be valuable some day? Thanks!

If that is the same picture you have on your blog then this is damage.
It happens when dust gets pressed into the copper when the blank strips are plated.
It has no extra value.

do you have msn or something to webcam chat
No. If you post the pictures online just link them here.
well because its hard to take a good picture of them
Here is my coins http://www.yfrog.com/froggy.php?username=brandondostie there is 20 pics on each page
well because its hard to take a good picture of them
Most if not all of your pictures are too blurry to judge.
That said most of your coins seem common in circulated grades, nothing stands out.
If you are using a camera to take the pictures then you'll need a tripod or steady surface and try placing them from far away and using the zoom to get sharper image.
Strong light like the sun also helps.
but is my coin collection good because i just started last year
is my coin collection good because i just started last year
For your first year it is very good.
do you no the most valuable coin most people have?
do you no the most valuable coin most people have?
1933 U.S. double eagle for about $7.59 million dollars.
That said there are a dozen of million dollar coins and many more worth thousands.
do you think a (MS-70) 1608-2008 ville DE QUÉBEC CITY 2 dollars be worth more than 2 dollars after a couple of years?.... because i have one. when it came out i got it and i put it in a case.
(MS-70) 1608-2008 ville DE QUÉBEC CITY 2 dollars
If graded it would be about $400.00.
when is this going to be about $400
when is this going to be about $400
I don't understand the question.
If this coin was graded and reached a the level of MS-70 you would sell it at auction and would expect at least $400 possibly more.
all i know it's a 1608-2008 2 dollars canada i got it when it came out and its in a case and it still looks the same way as i got it. there is No marks or any thing on it and it is vary shiny .............i dont really know the grades but i read about them and yahh look like MS-70 to me
look like MS-70 to me
MS-70 is a rare grade because it means the coin is perfect, never handled by human hands.
That said only a grading company can confirm that grade.
I suspect it is most likely MS-65 which is just about $12.

I have a few coins i could use some help with.
I have a 1992 penny in AU condition.
The words "In God we Trust" are non existent, the 2 is still visible but very weak and the L in liberty is non existent and the i and y are very weak.
#2
I also have a 1995 in almost mint state condition that is a very good double die on "liberty" and also "in god we"
#3
1983 in VF condition with the "tes" in states on the reverse double struck
#4
2000 with "America" double struck on the reverse
#5
1960-D with the small D inside a big D. you can see the smaller D on the inside of the curved part
#6
This one is the one i am most interested in.
It is a 1969-S that is double struck very clearly on the 196 on the date and the "S" mint mark, also can be seen in parts of "Liberty" and "In God we Trust".
i do know that there are as few as 38 known examples of this coin in the population reports as i have read on numismatic sites and there is a - mark in my red book where the price is supposed to be. my question is should i drive to Florida from Massachusetts to NGC to get this coin graded to ensure it does not get "lost" or damaged if this were to be a real double die
#1 1992 penny in AU condition.
The words "In God we Trust" are non existent, the 2 is still visible but very weak and the L in liberty is non existent and the i and y are very weak.
Either a weak strike or stuck through grease error, either way no extra value.
#2 1995 in almost mint state condition that is a very good double die on "liberty" and also "in god we"
About $15.00
#3 1983 in VF condition with the "tes" in states on the reverse double struck
Never heard of this but about $4.00 if not machine doubling.
#4 2000 with "America" double struck on the reverse
Never heard of this but about $4.00 if not machine doubling.
#5 1960-D with the small D inside a big D. you can see the smaller D on the inside of the curved part
About $1.00
#6 1969-S that is double struck very clearly on the 196 on the date and the "S" mint mark, also can be seen in parts of "Liberty" and "In God we Trust".
About $2.00 in fine.
my question is should i drive to Florida from Massachusetts to NGC to get this coin graded to ensure it does not get "lost" or damaged if this were to be a real double die
None are worth it, plus a suspect most of these are machine doubling which would make them worth nothing over face.
thanks for the last reply.
i have another few for you.
#1 1960-D with the R in Liberty being completely filled, The 9 in the date is completely filled, and the top of the s in pluribus on the reverse is filled all on the same coin. i know die chips are usually not worth much but this one coin has 3 which i found to be unusual.
#2 i have a 1996 that has "shadows" on everything on the front of the coin which are very easily seen with my hand lens. its as though it's a double die but does not have the full strike like a 1995 DDO but it is easily seen in the date, all the words, and Lincoln himself.
#3 this one is more of a curiosity but i thought o would ask anyway. it is a 1985 that has a gold like patina over the whole of the coin.
#4 this one is for a friend of mine. it was given to her through her tips at work and was rejected by the coin counter, it is a penny blank.
#5 i have a 2000 what i assume to be a grease strike error as the date is almost nonexistent as well as all the writing on the front and Lincoln's bust is struck very weakly throughout. but on the reverse it seems the bottom of the letters in "United States of America" were nipped off, there is a very apparent shadow throughout "one cent" all facing in the same direction, and lastly on the initials FG next to the Monticello look as though there are "speed marks" (like the ones used in cartoons to show movement to the left of either letter.
im sure ill come across some more that are curious but not worth much in the future. if you need pics i can scan the coins and email them to you or post them somewhere.

>>Even multiple die chips are normal even 10 would not have any extra unless they are big or have some eye appeal. Sorry, no extra value.

>>There is one known 1996 DDO it has "Nice doubling shows as a medium spread on WE TRUST, the date, eyelid, and the front of the coat."
Check here... http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1996&die_id=1996p1do001&die_state=mds
But yours sounds like hub doubling.
#3 this one is more of a curiosity but i thought o would ask anyway. it is a 1985 that has a gold like patina over the whole of the coin.
Plated coin, no extra value done by an outside >>mint.
#4 this one is for a friend of mine. it was given to her through her tips at work and was rejected by the coin counter, it is a penny blank.
>>About $1.50 without a rim
About $3.50 with a rim

>>Because of the Struck Through Grease error the entire coin was pressed lopsided and those are the effect, no extra value.
How much is a $20 dollar bill from 1979 worth?
$20 dollar bill from 1979
What country? The U.S. did not make any with this date.
No it's from Canada sorry I forgot to say that.

1958 wheat.penny that is very thin and has no outer ring
Sounds worn this is normal, no extra value.
i have two penny's one of them is a 1983 D penny with multiple "bumps" in various places on the obverse, and i have a 2004 D penny with a very weak stirke on the l and i in liberty, you can barely tell that they were their as well as a very weak stike in the entire word united. please help if you can, thanks!
1983 D penny with multiple "bumps" in various places on the obverse
--Gas bubbles, no extra value. This is actually considered damaged.
2004 D penny with a very weak stirke on the l and i in liberty, you can barely tell that they were their as well as a very weak stike in the entire word united.
--Weak strike or Struck Through Grease error, either way no extra value.
thanks! i have another one for you though, i have a 1968 quarter with no mintmark but what's interesting is that in the words E Pluribus Unum, the B isn't actually a B at all, it is an O with the right upper corner completely filled in, it looks like the blob is a mini B if you look at it closely
1968 quarter with no mintmark but what's interesting is that in the words E Pluribus Unum, the B isn't actually a B at all, it is an O with the right upper corner completely filled in, it looks like the blob is a mini B
Die Break error, it happens when the die used to make the coin gets old and begins to break around the letters.
No extra value, unless 10% or more of the surface.
thanks, you're pretty quick, looking through some coins, i'll let you know if i find anything later
