2003 Pakistan Rupee

Have a coin from Pakistan and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Another tough coin to figure out even in the internet age. Before the days of the world wide web I got the 1999 version of this coin. Three years would pass before I could identify this coin. Without a world coin book, a fluency in foreign languages, or a wise old coin dealer figuring out this coin is tough.

The description back when a first got this would have been; copper coin with a man wearing a fez, the date, and on the back some type of building Arabic maybe Persian.

In fact the guy on front is not wearing a fez and is the founder of Pakistan Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Urdu I think it is  قائد اعظم محمد علی جناح. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan or اسلامی جمہوریۂ پاکِستان is also on the obverse with the 2003 date.

The edge is reeded.

The reverse has a mosque, not the Taj Mahal as I thought once. Also روپیہ 1 which means 1 Rupee.

This deeply struck coin seems to be slightly misaligned but I doubt it brings any extra value.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 1 Rupee / Pakistan
Year: 2003
Mintage: Unknown
Metal: Bronze
Value: $0.35 in Extra-Fine ($0.01 in exchange value)

2004-A $50 Bill, GE-A

Have a fifty dollar note and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Do you know why they added an A under SERIES 2004?

It was because the United States got a new Treasurer. Anna Escobedo Cabral replaced Rosario Martin and all currency that was currently printed must reflect that change. The change is minor just a signature so the design series of 2004 just needed a little altering. Instead of calling this a new series with a new year they just add a letter A. If another small change in the design or signature was needed they would have 2004-B and so on.

The rest of the bill is very much the same as the rest of colorized fifties. There is always a bit of confusion when new bills are printed yet the year on stays the same. This is the original design year of the note and not the date printed. Currently most bills have the 2009 series year but have been printed in 2011 and 2012. There is no error it is just how the money is usually printed. It keeps the design simple and cost less than having a new date stamped on the money every year.

Here's the stats for this bill...
Type/Federal Bank: $50 Note / Richmond
Year: 2004 A
Printings: 60,800,000
Printed: November 2006
Run: 15th of 19 from GE44800001A - GE48000000A
Value: $50.00 in Extra-fine(the one above has folded corners)

1996 Norway Krone

Do you have a coin from Norway and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Congratulations to Norway's Alexander Kristoff for his cycling men's road race bronze medal victory.

Both in his honor and as a coincidence I am showing off this Norwegian coin. It is a simple Krone design-wise, nothing special or unique sticks out.

On the obverse is HARALD V ALT FOR NORGE means HARALD V ALL FOR NORWAY. Designers initial IR under the head. The crossed hammers are from the Kongsberg Mint. The grease/gum is on the surface and probably can easily and safely come off, I just have not done it yet.

On the reverse is a crown and 1 KRONE 1996 and the mintmaster's privy mark.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 1 Krone / Norway
Year: 1996
Mintage: 20,844,000
Metal: Copper-Nickel
Value: $0.20 in Very-Fine (about $0.17 in exchange value)

2011-P Chickasaw Quarter

Have a quarter and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Got this in my change this morning, thanks iced coffee barista. It is the most common of all the America the Beautiful quarters. On average it was made with double the amount of previous quarters.

The coin is very sharp and mint. The tenth quarter in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program it was released on November 14, 2011. So less than a year and I have it from change. I consider this a good thing.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 25 Cents-Chickasaw / United States
Year: 2011-P
Mintage: 73,800,000 (estimated)
Metal: 91.67% Copper 8.33% Nickel
Value: $0.25 in F-12

Sidenote: I think that iced coffee made me sick, I do not feel well.

1976 Nigeria 10 Kobo

Have a Nigeria coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment

This is a thin coin. Slightly smaller than a U.S. quarter is not special but being so thin makes it feel light and weak. At 0.79 mm (0.03125 in) it is less than half the thickness of a U.S. quarter, 1.75 mm (0.069 in). If I had more I would stack them up next to a quarter to see if they really take up half the space. Unfortunately this is the one and only Nigerian coin I own.

The obverse has the FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA 1976, the coat of arms has the short motto UNITY AND FAITH.

The edge has a security that is supposed to be reeded with an incuse design of dots and lonng and short gaps. This one is not really showing any reeding because it is so worn.

The reverse has 10 kobo and oil palms.

The entire coin is very worn but in a well circulated way. After a while collecting you can tell the difference between a weak strike and well worn. Add to that there is dirt and sand in the edge. I wonder is it African soil, that would cool.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 10 Kobo / Nigeria
Year: 1976
Mintage: 7,000,000
Metal: Copper-Nickel
Value: $0.15 in Very-Good

2004-P Canada Nickel

Have five cents from Canada and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Now this was a change find a day after the Ugandan floor find. So unless I find something within the next hour my streak ends with two finds in two days. Still I am happy as this 2004 P Canadian nickel is a new one for my collection.

All 2004 Canadian nickels have a P for the plated steel composition.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 5 Cents / Canada
Year: 2004 P
Mintage: 132,097,000
Metal: 94% Steel, 3.8% Copper, and 2.2% Nickel
Value: $0.05 in Extra-Fine

2007 Uganda 50 Shillings

Have a Uganda coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Found right on the subway floor two days ago. 2012 seems to be the year of ground finds as my change finds slows down. This is my first Ugandan coin of any type. Looking and feeling exactly like a nickel I wonder why it was left behind has a nickel become too little to pick up.

On the obverse is BANK OF UGANDA FIFTY SHILLINGS the national coat of arms says FOR GOD AND MY COUNTRY.

If I say nothing about the edge it means it is smooth and normal.

On the reverse is BANK OF UGANDA a antelope close-up in the wild over 50 SHILLINGS 2007. The 7 is very weak so I assume they reused the 2003 dies and just changed the 3 to a 7.

The entire coin is scratched but still shiny checked out the hot angled shots.

Another one found after work and my co-worker thought it might have dropped from some tourist pocket. I have a darker imagination and thought someone got robbed and the thief threw to the ground the non-American money.

I mean recently I read a guy found a gold coin in the CoinStar reject bin with a bunch of non-American coins. That is the classic steal coins and then dump them for face value, I do not know if the guy who found it cared but this seemed obvious.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 50 Shillings / Uganda
Year: 2007
Mintage: Unknown
Metal: Copper-Nickel
Value: $0.25 in Very-Fine (about $0.02 in currency exchange)

This new find it makes a total of 122 countries consisting of 2,036 coins (non-American and non-Canadian) . I estimate half were found and the others were bought at some point.

1972 Nicaragua 25 Centavos

Have a Nicaragua coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Yet another one and only coin from my vault. I always expect to have more Central and South American coins than I actually do. Again it is the proximity and the constant media about these countries that leads me to think I must have a ton of their coins.

On the obverse has REPUBLICA DE NICARAGUA ☆ 1972 ☆ around Francisco Hernández de Córdoba the guy they named their money after.

Edge has normal reeding.

The reverse EN DIOS CONFIAMOS 25 CENTAVOS DE CORDOBA which means IN GOD WE TRUST 25 CENTS OF CORDOBA . The design remained for a long time until they started making larger value coins and eventually demonetized these coins. (Now this time I am 99.99% certain these are no longer legal tender.)

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 25 Cents / Nicaragua
Year: 1972
Mintage: 4,000,000
Metal: Copper-Nickel
Value: $0.10 in Very-Fine

2006 $50 Bill, IE-A

Have a fifty dollar note and want to know its value? Leave a comment

As suggested I will try to show more currency. Now I have very few interesting notes since I only started to collect them the last decade or so. Most are just new and I am not obsessive about serial number or varieties.

This is one of the last fifty dollar bill I got. I think it was from my last scholarship check before graduating, I decided to cash it instead of banking it just to get walking around money. If my bad memory is correct I have not received any fifty or hundred dollars bills since early 2009.

Color, security strip, watermark, and a hologram are some obvious security measures but there are few more to prevent counterfeiting.

THE UNTIED STATES OF AMERICA in micro-printing on the collar.
3-D design with micro-printing of USA FIFTY on certain parts of the background.
Micro-printing of the word FIFTY along the border.
Despite all these measures counterfeiting is still a problem, especially among $20 and $100 bills. Certain scanners, printers, and software has been coded to refuse the copying or printing of currency. That said I have always been able to scan and print notes for my records without issues. Legally I think as long as no attempt at fraud is involved you can copy and print to your hearts content.

Ulysses S. Grant the 18th president is featured on the front of the note with the U.S. Capitol on the back.

Here's the stats for this bill...
Type/Federal Bank: $50 Note / Richmond
Year: 2006
Printings: 41,600,000
Printed: January 2009
Run: 12th of 13 from IE35200001A - IE38400000A
Value: $75.00 in CH-CU(the one above is a lesser grade but it is very close)

1985 New Zealand 10 Cents, Low Relief

Have a New Zealand coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment

The low relief version of the was made at Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa instead of the Royal Australian Mint, Canberra. It is distinguishable from the high relief version because of the wiry hair and bushy eyebrow. Well that is assuming you have another 1985 to compare it to, which I do not have.

Can you see the wiry hair and bushy eyebrow? Neither can I so I had to assume the the very detailed hair meant it was wiry. The fact most of the design is also very flat and does not pop out like high relief coin is another clue.

The biggest clue however is that the high relief version was only issued in sets and the low relief was for circulation. Although my previous New Zealand finds have included proofs I am almost certain this one is not mint or proof.

As with most New Zealand coins this one has been recalled, demonetized replaced*, and melted by the millions. They really did not like small change and killed it back in 2006.One result is that the surviving coins have increased in collectors value.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 10 Cents / New Zealand
Year: 1985 (Ottawa, recut die with low relief)
Mintage: 8,000,000
Metal: Copper-Nickel
Value: $0.25 in Very-Fine

*Let me make it clear the 10 cent coin is not demonetized but the copper-nickel version is not allowed to circulate officially and is meant to be substituted with the copper-plated steel at every transaction. Still the use of these small coins have decreased.

1979 Netherlands Antilles 25 Cents

Have a Netherlands Antilles coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment

The only Netherlands Antilles I own and I completely forgot where I got it. I know this is a Caribbean place, or at least it was once. I also know by 1985 this system is no longer in use but why I am not sure probably local independence.

Pretty average coin nothing jumps out design-wise.

On the obverse NEDERLANDSE ANTILLEN  LIBERTATE UNANIMUS 1979 which means NETHERLANDS ANTILLES FREEDOM OF THE MIND or UNIFIED BY FREEDOM (my Latin is not great) 1979. Two privy marks on either side of the shield.

The edge is reeded but no other security features.

The reverse has the six stars and 25 CENT not CENTS. Also some tropical leaves.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 25 Cent / Netherlands Antilles
Year: 1979
Mintage: 1,012,000
Metal: Nickel
Value: $0.15 in Very-Fine

2001 Netherlands 2 Euros

Have a Netherlands coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Now I remember why I did not originally take close up shots of certain coins yet I still posted them. The reason is mostly because they were hazy and my close up camera skill does not help the overall look.

Like I said back in 2006 this was a stranger find,. Often when you see a tourist struggling with change if you offer to help you can always gently ask/hint if they want to trade some of their native money.

The obverse has twelve star in the outer ring and the Utrecht privy mark of wine tendril with grapes. BEATRIX KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN 2001 or Beatrix Queen Of The Netherlands with her profile.

The edge has GOD * ZIJ * MET * ONS * or GOD * BE * WITH * US * incused on the reeded surface.

The reverse has 2 EURO and the first Euro Zone map with stars and a little LL for the designer Luc Lucyx.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 2 Euros / Netherlands
Year: 2001
Mintage: 140,500,000
Metal: Bi-Metallic Brass center in Copper-Nickel ring
Value: $4.00 in UNC (Currently $2.45 in exchange value)

1974 Nepal 50 Paisa, Proof?

Have a Nepal coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Lots of things difficult to identify on this coin.
  • No identifiable Western text.
  • No identifiable Arabic or Roman numerals.
  • Few symbols or searchable figures.
  • Very shiny, no frost but also has a haze.
The sun and the moon gave it away as Nepalese, only because I have seen those symbols on Nepalese art. I was very reluctant to call this a proof coin even if at most angles it has a mirror finish . The rainbow haze makes this coin a tough sell even if a I got it in a coin lot.

The pictures above show the rainbow affect and mostly green damage associated with improperly stored coins. Stuff like distilled water, pure acetone (not nail polish remover), or a product called MS-70 should clear the haze without damaging or altering the coin. I have neither so I will not try.

An angled look at the same coin hides most of the haze and shows the proof-like background. I wish I had a non-proof version to compare but again I do not have one. It is not surprising to find proof coins in coin lots since they are often damaged in some way but still too valuable to just dump into circulation.

Your opinion counts s o let me know. Do you think this is a proof coin?

Here are the stats for this...
Type/Country: 50 Paisa / Nepal
Year: 1974 (2031)
Mintage: 11,000
Metal: 75% Copper, 25% Nickel
Value: $0.50 in Proof AU

2000 Namibia 5 Cents

Have a Namibia coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Although I have talked about this coin before it is so high quality that it needs its own post. Stainless steel and being new when I got it makes this one of the best African coins I own.

It is so shiny and new that I had a difficult time photographing it. I know I should use a light box or a double light set up but with only a few minutes to take the pictures I hope you can see the quality.

UNITY LIBERTY JUSTICE 2000 REPUBLIC OF NAMIBIA
XXI CENTURY 5c HORSE MACKEREL EAT MORE FISH FAO · FOOD SECURITY
The front has some die polishing marks and I wanted to highlight them so the picture is slightly off.

This is another FAO issue coin and they are promoting food security asking people to eat more fish.

Here's the stats for this coin...
Type/Country: 5 Cents / Namibia
Year: 2000
Mintage: Unknown.
Metal: Stainless Steel
Value: $0.50 in XF, $1.00 in UNC

One last picture, in  hand the coin looks like this.

I am not sure which one you prefer.

1966 Myanmar 50 Pyas

Have a Myanmar coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment

One of the more difficult coins to identify especially since the Burmese language is not internet friendly. It is possible to read the language with some special support but usually you get ၅၀ ဟ္ရး ၁၉၆၆(50 PYAS 1966). Describing the coin is little help, there is a man, some words and an open wreath on the back.

Luckily I know enough about languages to narrow it down to the Thai or Burmese regions and then a little searching lead me to Myanmar. Also lucky is that all the Myanmar coins I own are from 1966. This year was the only issue to feature Aung San on the front. Every other year had an animal or plant.

On the back  in the center is what I assume is the word PYAS but to me it looks like a camera. There written language is one of the nicest I have ever seen. Hopefully the web will catch up and make it universally readable.

Here are the stats for this...
Type/Country: 50 Pyas / Myanmar
Year: 1966
Mintage: Unknown
Metal: Aluminum
Value: $0.40 in Very-Fine

1987 Morocco Dirham

Have a Morocco coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Each time there is a new ruler in Morocco they have a reform and change their coins and currency. Maybe that has changed recently but over the last hundred years they reformed about ten times. This one is the al-Hassan II version that lasted from 1962-1999 and under that rule there were two reforms. Oh boy it gets tough if your not familiar with the history.

This one is very worn for being so young. Must of seen some tough times.

Here are the stats for this...
Type/Country: 1 Dirham / Morocco
Year: 1987-1407
Mintage: Unknown
Metal: Copper-nickel

1960 Lincoln Cent, Large Date

Have a cent and want to know its value? Leave a comment

There are large date and small date varieties on all 1960 cents. I have not found a 1960 small date since this blog began so I cannot feature one yet. Still I can show you how to tell if your 1960 is a large date.

We will focus on identifying a 1960 large cent.

For the large date:
  • The top of the 9 is always higher than the top of the 1.
  • The top of the 6 is at the same or very close to the right most edge of the 6.
For the small date:
  • The top of the 9 is equal or lower than the top of the 1.
  • The top of the 6 stops halfway to edge and is very close to the center of the 6.
The small date is more scarce but the exact percentage is not really known. Seeing how I cannot recall the last time I found one I think it is at 1% (about 5,864, 050). That is still a lot of cents so even if you have a small date it is about $0.30 in extremely-fine or about 15 times the value of the large date.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 1 Cent  / United States
Year: 1960 Large Date
Mintage: 586,405,000 (both types included)
Metal: 95% Copper, 5% Tin, and Possibly Zinc
Value: $0.02 in EF-40

Yes if I find the small date I will do a side by side comparison but since I am using original pictures and finds it may take a while.
