Happy Canada Day!
A toonie to celebrate Canada Day which is like the Fourth of July except with less Americans. Toonies are the nickname for two dollar coins from Canada. I got this in my change back in 1996 when they first came out. I figure some confusion about the legality of these new coins in the U.S. happened at the store I got this at. Remember this was pre-state quarter and pre-dollar coin so people were not as coin savvy. The toonie was a response to the popularity of the loonie, the Canadian dollar coin. The need for long lasting small change was why Canada decided to make these coins. The claim that a Canadian note last only one year and the coin last twenty years seems a bit of a stretch. They flooded the market with over 375 million toonies and the two dollar bill was withdrawn during the prior years forcing these coins to be the only choice.
It is not comparable to the American two dollar bill since we as a people do not use them on a daily basis. All the money comparison between our two countries is loony. Americans have always done things different and Canada's smaller population will always handle change well.
The obverse has the Queen and features a tiny maple leaf. The edge has an interrupted serration. The reverse has a polar bear on an ice floe with the initials BT for Brent Townsend the designer.
Here's the stats...
