Despite this being almost thirty years old this note has gained nothing in value. I will now ignore all the fiat money talk and just go on. This note was made before watermarks, before security strips, and before multicolor printing.
Interesting things about this note:
- It was actually printed in October 1983 so it is just 28 years old.
- This is one of the first notes printed 100,000 sheets per run (a sheet contains 32 notes).
- Previous to this, notes were printed 40,000 sheets per run.
- There is a 302 bank counter-stamp, probably placed when out of country.

--Not really, it will still pass the pen test.
Then again younger cashiers tend to think it is fake but managers are usually 30+ so they would approve it.

American money is often used outside the United States, many countries accept U.S. bills or trade them easily.
In these countries counterfeiters, banks, and currency exchangers exist on a larger scale. So when they get US money they place a stamp on it if it is real this way local businesses know this is real money.
Some notes have up to a dozen stamps meaning they were verified more than once.
Thanks to technology these stamps are not needed as often since a portable machine can verify bills without leaving marks.

It does look like an Ink Smear error but I cannot be 100%.
Your ink smear happened on the back but it soaked through the front. If real it should of just stayed on one side.
Plus it would be darker unless it was a solvent error but then it would be solid not having edge-stains.
I am 99% sure it is damage.
Generally it would add $25 so no big loss if you decide to use it.

Something like this, ungraded could only be sold on eBay. From what I know if your a good seller you may get more, but if not it is a tough sell.
You try a local coin shop but expect to get half the estimated value.

Hi. I found your blog through a search to find out if 3 $100's I have are worth more than face value, or if saved for a while for the kids will the value increase greatly or not. They are consecutive crisp bills from the bank last week. That said the high grade would make them about $125.00 each but difficult to sell and not a great investment for the future.

The number seems real but that does not prove it is. The fact it passes the pen test should be enough.
Any person who does not accept this bill should be fired. It has little collectors value so I would try finding a bank or a smart manager at a store that will take it.

Most are real, feel a new dollar bill and the old one it should be bumpy cloth like.
Try taking it to a store just to check with a special pen or machine.
