1974 Nepal 50 Paisa, Proof?

Have a Nepal coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Lots of things difficult to identify on this coin.
  • No identifiable Western text.
  • No identifiable Arabic or Roman numerals.
  • Few symbols or searchable figures.
  • Very shiny, no frost but also has a haze.
The sun and the moon gave it away as Nepalese, only because I have seen those symbols on Nepalese art. I was very reluctant to call this a proof coin even if at most angles it has a mirror finish . The rainbow haze makes this coin a tough sell even if a I got it in a coin lot.

The pictures above show the rainbow affect and mostly green damage associated with improperly stored coins. Stuff like distilled water, pure acetone (not nail polish remover), or a product called MS-70 should clear the haze without damaging or altering the coin. I have neither so I will not try.

An angled look at the same coin hides most of the haze and shows the proof-like background. I wish I had a non-proof version to compare but again I do not have one. It is not surprising to find proof coins in coin lots since they are often damaged in some way but still too valuable to just dump into circulation.

Your opinion counts s o let me know. Do you think this is a proof coin?

Here are the stats for this...
Type/Country: 50 Paisa / Nepal
Year: 1974 (2031)
Mintage: 11,000
Metal: 75% Copper, 25% Nickel
Value: $0.50 in Proof AU

Do you have any Nepalese coins and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

10 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

I'm gonna go ahead and say that it's a proof. The surface is pretty clean and coins from that area are usually not minted with such precision. Its a beautiful coin, I found this on eBay for you to at least compare your coin.

That's one for proof.

I saw that link when I did some searching I also saw several Nepalese proof sets but some non-proofs also look clean and shiny.
