Buy them gold.
For whatever holiday you celebrate in the upcoming few weeks nothing would make a nicer gift than a bit of gold. I got this for myself in 2002 for Christmas from the mint for $42.95. Currently they are $175.00 on average, subject to the changing value of spot gold.
Check out the size compared to a dime, yup slightly smaller but worth so much more. |
Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 5 Dollar / United States
Year: 2002
Mintage: 230,027

I can't believe how small this is. If you save coins in a bank, do they not spend them or anything?
I can't believe how small this is.
--Yes, it is thinner too.
If you save coins in a bank, do they not spend them or anything?
--No, most collectors have a private box/vault in the bank that you can put anything in. The only person that can open them is the you. Keep passport, coins, old pictures, and other stuff for a small annual fee.
I never knew that about banks.
The problem with small size is that someone could accidentally lose it or spend it, if it's not in the bank. I know someone spent a silver quarter before, and someone spent a 1/2 franc thinking it was a dime.

I have not heard of anyone finding these but some roll hunters have found 1915 Austrian Gold Ducat, ancient Romans, and many Proof halves.

Just got and posted about a 1952 dime I found in circulation. It made me think of your post from last month about finding good coins between Black Friday and Christmas and I suppose this is proof. Anyway, thanks for the indirect advice from that post and happy hunting!
@Dr. Math that is great just keep an eye out it others are out there.
Hello, I have a 1968 Singaore 20 cent Fish coin (on back Swordfish/Marlin?) Is it worth anything?

Partial Offset Transfer error about $65.00.
Maybe it's because I work at a grocery store, but I haven't found any increase in unusual coins since Black Friday and now Christmas is a week away. A good find though this week is that I got 2 silver coins, a 1957 dime and another 1964 quarter.

Agree'd so far I only one interesting coin this December. I will post it on Monday but this season has been tough.
I am part of the problem I have got 4 gift card and haven't used cash to buy any gifts.
It's going to be harder to find anything after Christmas since people are going to use gift cards. Even now, every one out of ten people use cash that come through my line.

Arghhh, that's not fun.
I may have spoke a little soon, and I may have jinx it now, but I got a few unique items today. I got a brand new $2 dollar bill, a 1950-D $5 dollar bill, a Bahama cent, as well as some more Canadian coins.

Not bad for one day.
Most non-star 1950-D $5 dollar bills are common but the E-C serial numbers have a slight premium.
Interesting. I think this is just a regular old 1950 five dollar bill, which is great to have in a collection.
