1956D Wheat Cent

Do you have a wheat cent and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

It has been nearly two months since I found an older American coin in my change, by older I mean older then 1959. Today when putting away my change I found a 1956-D cent which I have no idea where I got it since I spent the whole day shopping.

It's true that this coin is not particularly valuable or rare but it is a wheatie and over 50 years old. Only the third 1956D cent I found and seeing how so many people are searching bank rolls it may be one of the last.

Here are the stats for this penny...
Type/Country: 1 Cent/United States
Year: 1956D
Mintages: 1,098,201,100
Metal: 95% Copper, 5% Tin and Zinc
Value: $0.10 in VF-20

Do you have an old penny and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

257 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

Hello, I found an unusual penny in the pocket of a used coat I bought. It is a 1970 D that appears to have been struck on a dime blank. It is the exact size of a dime and with the bi-metallic composition of a dime. The image is offset with parts missing as the dime is of course smaller.

Anonymous said...

Oops, make that a 1971 D on a dime.

Off Metal error about $500.00
It should be graded for maximum value.

Look here for other examples around no.21...

I have a 1956 penny that seems to have an s over the d. I saw somewhere it was rare but can't find a picture to confirm this is what I am looking at. Is it possible and if so what would something like that be worth.

Man said...

1956 penny that seems to have an s over the d

I know there is 2 varieties of D/S both are low value, $3.00 in good.

I've never seen a genuine S/D for 1956.
It is possible and if certified it may be a few hundred but I suggest getting good pictures and showing them around online before spending any money.

Just play money used in schools, they average $0.25 or less per fake coin in high grade.

But since they are common they often don't sell well.

This is not listed anywhere there are 2 D/S types about $5.00.

There are some D/D/D and D/D/D/D about $1.00.

If you can verify yours it might be about $20.00 in low grade.

I was going through my dad's old coin stuff and we stumbled upon this weird penny from 1957. It is a Lincoln wheat back from what I can tell. The weird bit is that the edges are really thick and not circle shaped. They are roughly octagonal. There are also 2 dents in the coin. Same spot on each side. It's dented inwards which is odd. The edge that would normally be smooth that you could roll the penny on also has several deformities. To be honest it looks more like it was meant to be wavy instead of straight. The penny is a 1957 D. It has a picture of Lincoln on the front that is quite thick and his chin is odd. It has Liberty on it but the L is missing. on the reverse side it has One cent and United States of America. One of the dents I mentioned goes right through the middle of United and States and goes down through of A-Merica. The two wheat prints are on the outside of the coin almost. Right at the octagonal shaped border. Although on the back it's more rounded. Looking very closely I can see that it has E Pluribus Unum or something but it's cut in half by the rather large border of the coin. Any ideas about this coin? I'd prefer if you email me because I'm not certain if I can find this sight again and I'll have an easier time sending you pictures of it that way if you need them.

No, the VDB was moved to the front underneath Lincoln's shoulder.

No problem, the value does not change much over the years. It has been $0.10 in very-fine for years. Still a nice old coin.

Anonymous said...

I checked under Lincoln's shoulder but it isn't there either

Man said...

That's normal, the VDB is small and incused so it is worn way very easily.

Look at a new cent and compare.

This does not bring any extra value even if it is weak strike.

I have a 1907 liberty nickel (I believe) with V on the back. It is all very legible and clean but is wore pretty thin and doesn't have any groves along the out side like it has on the front of it. Any thoughts of its value? Even if its not worth much I thinks its neat being over 100 years old...
