Have a $2.00 bill and want to find out its value? Leave a comment
There is a 2009 $2 Bill in circulation but I have yet to find any. I have posted about the 2003-A, the 2003, and the classic 1976 before. The 1995 is the the last remaining Federal Reserve $2 bill to talk about and there is not much to say.
It is common and looks like every other modern $2 note. They have not been updated and I doubt they will get the fancy security updates like the new $100 bill. The new and future twos wi;l most likely always look the same.
Older than 1976 still have the same basic design but the seal colors were red. Those are legal tender notes and will gt to them soon. For now enjoy the fact that these seldom seen $2 bill from 1976-2009 are all common and worth little extra with few exceptions. A few star notes have some decent value but those are less common to come by in your change, then again maybe you have one. Let me know.
Type/Federal Bank: $2 Note- Fort Worth / Atlanta
Year: 1995
Date Printed: November 1996
Printings: 153,600,000
Run: 9th run out of 9 from F51200001B - F57600000B
Value: $2.00 in Very-Fine

What is it worth? What could it be worth? And did I just get scammed? The trio of links this week will have you thinking about cash for now and hopefully for the future.
Scotland will decide what national currency to adopt. Will it be the Euro? Maybe a Sterling? Or the tried and true Scot-Dollar?
That famed 1913 nickel was sold for over $3 million and will stay in the United States.
I got slugged for a quarter.

1962-D Nickel
Have a nickel and want to know its value? Leave a comment
To say the last few weeks have been slow for finding coins is an understatement. Still I have that 50 year or older rule so at least that gives me something to search for in what little change I come across.
Nothing special and very common so even you can have one. When there are a drought of coins anything can be a collectible. It would be nice to upgrade since a coin like this is not sharp but I have not even found and decent looking mint state coins.
Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 5 Cents / United States
Year: 1962 D
Mintage: 280,195,720
Metal: 75% Copper 25% Nickel
Value: $0.05 in G-4

Aluminum Slug
Have a fake coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment
Got this as a quarter in a bunch of quarters from a store that just cracked open a roll of quarters. the problem is that it is not a quarter. It is lightweight (2.00 grams) and although the size is right everything else is just wrong.
I would have complained but I never featured an aluminum slug before so, tada! These can be made at any metal shop and is often the byproduct of punching out holes in fuse boxes. Many bad people often put some in quarter rolls to cheat the system.
That said there are some U.S. quarter size foreign coins that use aluminum but I doubt this is one of them. While at the moment I cannot be 100% sure the interest in blank aluminum coins is so low that it really does not matter.
Here's the stats...
Type/Country: Aluminum Blank / Unknown
Year: (No date)
Mintage: Any one with an electric drill.
Metal: Aluminum (estimate)
Value: Less than $0.01

1964 Indonesia 10 Sen
Have an Indonesian note and want to know its value? Leave a comment
Taking a quick break from U.S. notes to talk about my oldest foreign note. I got this from a Cheerios box back in the 1980s when they had a special in box promotion.Cheerios has been doing this for year in the 1950s they had replica confederate money and the most famous is the Sacagewea coins from the 2000s.
BANK INDONESIA 10 SEPULUH SEN 10 1964 |
If I recall correctly they had 5 or 6 different notes you could collect from around the world. Of course all were worth less than a penny, yet they were uncirculated. For year I kept this one in perfect condition but one day when I was very young I found out it was the least valuable of all the cereal box money so I decided to fold it up and keep it in my wallet.
Those were the years I stopped collecting. After the state quarters came out I decided to revisit the bill and saw it is still worth little in uncirculated ($0.50) or circulated ($0.10). Still it is a neat tiny note from a time that something so small could fascinate a young collector.
Here's the stats for this bill...
Type/Country: 10 Sen / Indonesia
Year: 1964
Printings: Unknown
Printed: Unknown
Run: Unknown
Value: $0.05 in Fine

A nice summary of past and future coins this week. The Bitcoin is just getting started while the lonely pound is 30 years old.
PC Mag has a nice summary about Bitcoins except a proper explanation of how this e-currency is made.
The British pound coin marks 30 years of a solo career after replacing the pound note in April of 1983.
I had nothing that new or old so I just wrote about the $5 bill from 1995.

1963 Lincoln Memorial Cent
Have an older cent and want to know its value? Leave a comment
Happy 50th birthday to this Lincoln cent. So you are half a century old and still not special. Well that is okay at least you survived.
Yes this coin has no extra value over metal content but it is getting old. As the years pass coins get harder to find. I suggest picking a certain time and start collecting coins before that time. 25 years seems a bit short while 100 years seems a bit long. Picking an arbitrary year like 1964 is fine but that leaves out newer coins that eventually will become classics. Again it is not about value but making sure your future collection is complete.
Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 1 Cent / United States
Year: 1963
Mintage: 754,110,000
Metal: 95% Copper, 5% Zinc

1939 Canadian Nickel
Have a Canadian nickel and want to know its value? Leave a comment
The good thing about Canadian nickels is they have not changed much throughout the years. This 1939 nickel looks almost the same as a 2013. Well at least the back. Of course this older coin features King George while the new ones have Queen Elizabeth.
GEORGIVS VI D:G:REX ET IND:IMP: was King George the 6th from 11 December 1936 – 6 February 1952. It is still possible to find a coin from that era in your change because although the metal has changed the dimensions and weight are virtually the same. With the exceptions of commemorates the designs are very much the same. Even as kings and queens change they still use similar fonts and bust styles so the average person would not immediately notice.
The bad thing about older Canadian nickels is that most have little extra value. Even as time goes by they are common in low grade. In high grades they tend to have more value but those are hard to find in circulation.
Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 5 Cents / Canada
Year: 1939
Mintage: 5,661,123

1995 $5 Bill, G-E
Have a five dollar star note and want to know its value? Leave a comment
The last and second oldest five dollar note I have to feature. I have a 1953-A that I featured at the end of 2011 but that was an aberration. It was a rare thing to find a note older than the 1990s. The main reason for lack of older notes is that they are very different looking. 1995 was the last year of the old small portrait notes.
There is no wild purple coloring. It looks classic and green which makes it easy to spot and eliminate from circulation. Except for the odd random old note I doubt my five dollar collection will grow much. I expect maybe a few more new issues until I do not see them anymore. Still for the short while I have been collecting notes, about 10 years, from circulation only it has been a nice set.

Coined For Money: Round-Up Apr.8-14, 2013
Coin mistakes abound and even I made one. No pictures today because of my silly mistake.
A limited edition coin featuring James Joyce was misquoted and minted. They will give full refunds but that would a waste of an error/variety coin.
Went to Yankees stadium recently.
Passed by the penny squishing machines.
Made a mental note to get some.
Left the stadium and completely forget to get some.

2012-D Denali Quarter
Have a quarter and want to know its value? Leave a comment
The most common of all America the Beautiful Series Quarters. Most of 2012 saw the lowest production of any commemorative quarter so they made up for that by issuing a bunch of quarters at the end of the 2012. The Denali Denver coin had the largest minted amounts than every other Denver quarter in 2012.
That pattern of making up for a coin shortage and the end of the year is common. The only thing is for regular issues you do not notice since every coin is the same. Conversely true is that the first coins issued in any year are usually the lowest minted.
Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 25 Cents-Denali / United States
Year: 2012-D

1965 Syria 2-1/2 Piastres
Have a Syrian
coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment
This is the only Syrian coin I own. Coins from Syria are very similar to other from the region. This is because it is an Islamic country and they avoid human images. The imperial eagle is used on many Islamic coins and can be seen with or without stars on the shield. Not being able to read the language it took some time checking the coin books to match this coin (pre-internet find).
Currently Syria is in the middle of a civil war. Turmoil and troubles are devastating the country and the people. The monetary is also seeing big problems. Currently this coin is $0.00036 in U.S. dollars although I have heard that 2-1/2 piastres is not a widely used coin. 10 and 25 pounds coins are normal while the piastres is considered low value and rarely used.
Expect that after the war is over a new monetary system will be issued.

1999 $5 Bill, BE-B
Have a five dollar star note and want to know its value? Leave a comment
This five is in rough shape especially considering I pulled it out of my change a few years ago. Things are not permanent and if you wait too long they might disappear. These bill quickly began to go away as newer notes appeared. Since this 1999 series was printed four more series have been issued.
Again this note is still common but the lack of enhanced security features makes it a shred priority for the banks and government. The fact it lacks the latest bright colors makes it easy to separate at the bank level. I hope to upgrade this note but I do not see that happening soon or ever for free.

Coined For Money: Round-Up Mar. 25-Apr.7, 2013
New coin ideas are gaining popularity around the world but there is still some old ideas about saving money that I do enjoy. This round up will have you thinking twice about the future of money.
Coin Update has a wonderful article about a new collectors coin from Poland that is oddly thick. More like a tube or cylinder of silver than a typical coin.
Starting April 11, 2013 you can start submitting your design for the new U.S. baseball coin.
British people are saving more small change in jars than in banks. It makes sense when you need to buy milk or anything else small but I think this is normal and having bank accounts for every small purchase is ridiculous.
I found a 2013 cent in 2013!. That was fast seeing how I find less coins everyday.

Not a particularly nice example of the Denver Chickasaw quarter but at least I found one. Trying to get at least one of every circulating quarter is still difficult. To this day I still have not found some Denver quarters from 2003.

The Swiss Franc is worth $1.06 in U.S. Dollars and that is a low compared to a year ago when it was above $1.25. That is because Switzerland did not adopt the Euro and being a neutral country they are very stable, not perfect but stable.
This is one of the few example of coins that actual gain value in all categories:

No fooling this is a common note.
Yes all old federal notes are still legal tender, even some non-federal notes are still legal to use. On this day dedicated to pranks be aware that the U.S. may stop issuing some notes ore coins but they are still legal even if the value exceeds face value.
Now this one I am featuring is nice but hardly valuable or rare. Yet because it lacks the color of modern notes some people are suspicious. Ten years changed the currency enough to make some people forget the older notes.
