1886 Morgan Dollar

Do you have a coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

My last eBay purchase was this nice Morgan dollar. I bought for $23.50 plus shipping and handling. The coin is raw but marked MS-65.

1886O

1886R

MS-65 in a Morgan Dollar is described by having only light, scattered contact marks that are not distracting and strong luster with good eye appeal.

MS-64, which is what I believe this one is can be described by having a few scattered contact marks, good eye appeal and attractive luster.

This may fall into the MS-65 category but Morgan dollars are one of the most graded coin and submitting it professional would probably bring it in at MS-64.

Maybe one day I'll submit it to PCGS but not now.

Here's the stat for this coin...
Type: 1 Dollar-Morgan Dollar
Year: 1886
Mintage: 19,963,000
Metal: 90% silver, 10% copper
Value: $80.00 in MS-64 or $175.00 in MS-65

Price updated for 2012 and value went down $30.00 and $25.00 respectively since 2006.

Do you have a coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

130 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

I have a similar coin but it is a 1921. It looks the same and it is in pretty good shape I think. How much would that be worth?

Man said...

1921 in MS-64 is $50.00. The 1921 Morgan is the most common of all Morgan dollars.

Still a great coin.

I have 20 1886 Morgan Dollars. Are they worth more since i have a lot of them it good condition? Who would i find that would accually want to buy them???

Man said...

They average about $25.00 each. You can try eBay which is where I bought my 1886 in raw form for $23.50.

If you think yours are in mint state you may want to go to PCGS and pay for a professional grade and sell them for $100+ on eBay.

You can join a coin forum and sell them to a member or ask them for an opinion on the grade.
Last is go to coin shop and sell them for 90% of their assumed value.

Man said...

I'll give it for 2 possible mint states.
MS-64 about $75.00
MS-65 about $200.00

Notice the big jump for 1 point.
Only a grading service can give you an accurate grade.

Man said...

1900, and when i looked at the back of it closer, above the word dollar is an o

This is the mintmark for the New Orleans mint, which no longer operates.
It is common.
I'll give it for 2 possible mint states.
MS-64 about $75.00
MS-65 about $250.00

There is a variety that has O over CC but it is rare.

I have an 1886 half dollar that looks identical to the one posted on your page. It appears to have been circulated but is in great condition. Any way to estimate it's value?

I also have a 1923 dollar coin, a bicentennial dollar coin with Eisenhower on it. My email in *****@hope-link.org

Yes I wrote...
Value: $70.00 in MS-64 or $200.00 in MS-65
It is still a valid price.
If you want they sell Photograding books to really compare yours to the standards.

1923 dollar coin
About $12.00

bicentennial dollar coin with Eisenhower
About $2.00
About $16.00 if silver.

Hi there. I have 5 Morgans. I would greatly appreciate your opinion of their values.

1.1880 Philadelphia mint
2.1883 New Orleans mint
3.1884 New Orleans
4.1889 Philly
5.1890 Philly

Man said...

I'll assume about uncirculated (AU-50).

1880 P about $30.00
1883 O about $30.00
1884 O about $30.00
1889 P about $30.00
1890 P about $35.00

None are rare or key dates, still with the price of silver climbing if they are higher grades you may fetch more.

Yes.
An 1886-O Morgan dollar in
MS-60 is about $750.00
MS-60 is described by having no trace of wear, full mint luster and few noticeable marks.

Above MS-60 the coin really gains value into the thousands of dollars.

I have a set of CC GSA 1880-1885 Silver Eagle Dollars (six consecutive uncirculated) Need worth as set?

Man said...

set of CC GSA 1880-1885 Silver Eagle Dollars (six consecutive uncirculated)

About $2,375.00 for the set assuming MS-60(mint state).

If you get each one graded and sold separately this value may increase ten times.

These are Morgan dollars not Silver Eagles. There are some fake silver eagles dollars dated form the 1880s and are often mistaken with the real deal.

How do you know if it's an O or a P?

Look on the reverse below the wreath above the DO of DOLLAR.
If it is blank that is a P.
If not the letters could be O, CC, S, or D.

1885 Morgan Dollar with the letter G in the middle of the eagle

That would be a counterstamp used by someone in the distant past to certify ownership or that it was real.

Today it's considered damage and drop the coin's value to about $8.72 for the silver.

How do you know if a 1886 is MS-64 or MS-65 or any of the other MS's

It is an ANA Grading Standard. The book of the same name deals with each coin and how they are graded.

But this LINK is a good overview.

MS-65 in a Morgan Dollar is described by having only light, scattered contact marks that are not distracting and strong luster with good eye appeal.

MS-64 can be described by having a few scattered contact marks, good eye appeal and attractive luster.

What does a cracked die really add to a coin's value? I mean the sort of thing where a crack shows along the lettering 1/3 way across coin, maybe top, often 2 places on same side of coin.
Simply Put: at what point does a cracked die prove valuable?
and I know to identify the cracked die- from the always wavery line, often in arcs or short scurved lines; but sometimes with numerous cracks, like a windshield looking like a clumsy jig-saw puzzle.

Man said...

at what point does a cracked die prove valuable?

Die cracks on Morgans are very common.

Cracks add value if they are from the center of the coin to the rim.
Completely across the coin, rim to rim.
Cracked around the edge, not the rim.
Gives a shattered effect.

Also certain die chips or cuds or hub breaks fall into the same category.

1 - 3 small cracks do not add value.

Those are the one dollars I have three half dollars... 1833, 1907 and 1911. I have a quarter sized 1848 one cent piece and a 1911 nickel. I won't go into any more. These were just in one of the money satchels. Oh I also found a O.G. Smith 1.00 in Trade Coin from April 7th 1914 with a bullet hole. Any help here would be appreciated and I can take pictures of any if you'd like. Thank you for your help!!!!

ok thanks because i have a book from 1980's that say its worth $625

Book value is $1,325 but at auction on eBay and Heritage these sold for $200.

Most agree the book value is overinflated but 1921-S in high grades have been few if this was MS-66 it would easily be $3,000.

Better is a range so I'll revise to say $200 to $1,300 for this coin in MS-65.

PCGS has the most accurate population guide and that sets the current value.

I could be wrong but it is close to perfect, on the cheek bone there is what looks like the plastic display thing it's in has been pressed or rubbed against it that is the only flaw that I noticed I'll look better with a mag. glass later and it also has the certificate with what i believe is a mint or serial type of number all in excellent condition,
thank you.

That high of a grade would put it well over $3,000.00 the highest grade I've ever seen was an MS-67.
Paying to have it professionally raded would be best.

hello, I actually have many coins that were left to us through my father-in-laws estate.
I do not have the slightest idea of where to go to have them valued or to sell them.
One of them is a Morgan Dollar as you have mentioned above, it is in a cardboard frame (like the one pictured)written in the left hand corner is 1886 and in the right hand corner, 'BW'.

We also have a few Liberty Walking 1/2 Dollars and Mercury Dimes (1941,1942,1945)packaged together.
Many more coins, too....but this is a start.
Thanks for your help.

Man said...

1886 and in the right hand corner, 'BW'.
BW most likely means Bright White which is a good color for silver. At mint state it would be about $60.00.

Aside from eBay your best bet is to pick up a coin mag. or book for cheap.

Liberty Walking 1/2 Dollars and Mercury Dimes (1941,1942,1945)
Dimes are about $1.30 each.
Halves are about $7.00 each.

Most silver dollars are just worth the metal content since cleaning, damage, and other things knock out the collectors value.

$18.00 is usually the lowest these sell for know but silver prices are going up.

Sorry I do not understand.
If your dollars look like the picture above then they are Morgans.
If they look like Morgans and they are gold colored they have been gold-plated and just have metal value.

1886-O about $31.00
1893 about $240.00 if Morgan
