An Error Penny

Do you have an error penny and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.11a

On May 22 of this year I was searching through my change at the end of the day and found a 1956 wheat cent, which was ok they are worth about in that condition.

I left the coin on my desk because I was too busy to catalog my newest find. Then a few days later I noticed some crud on the coin then I looked closer and saw it was actually excess copper between the B and E in LIBERTY.
11
Immediately I recognized it was a "BIE" error and sure enough I got my error book out and there it was as clear as day.

Here's this coin stats...
II-F-4 BIE Die Variety (W) = a die break or crack between the B and the E.
Fairly common in the years 1955-1958 and value at $1.00 to $20.00.
I figure due to all the green spots and circulation wear that mine is closer to $1.00.

For a while BIE pennies became very popular and the BIE Guild was formed. Soon so many of these errors were found that the value went down and the collectors stopped tracking these coins. The BIE Guild dissolved and now unless the coin is proof or in excellent shape the premium for this error is low.

Here is a better picture of this type of error from LeeG(an expert collector) he also found a 1956 BIE but as you see in a higher grade.Do you have an error penny and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

1459 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

Struck Through Grease or Late Stage Die error, either way no extra value.

These types of errors are very common especially on cents.

I have a deformed penny: it looks like there was a full blank penny on both sides with about 1/4 of a 1965 penny attached, grooved into the blank penny as if it were stamped that way.

I'm wondering the value. Thanks!

Off-Center strike error about $5.00 if circulated but still sharp.

Man said...

1992 penny the M in America is very close to the E
Possible Close AM they start at $2,500 but this should be verified.

and on the front in front of Lincoln's eye it looks like a D or an O
Possibly damage but could also be a Dropped Letter error which would add value.

This should either be well photographed and placed online or taken to an expert.

Can't really see since the image is not clear.

That said images are not needed since these types of die cracks or breaks do no add any extra value.

They are caused by older dies that press each coin and often start at the highest points of the design. Eventually these small cracks will turn to larger breaks and if going from rim to rim across the coin the will have value.

Man said...

1945 penny and it looks like it has a piece of crud covering the words in God We Trust. The back is in pretty good shape. Is this an atheist penny?

If the "piece of crud" can be removed then it is just dirty, no extra value.

The famed "Atheist Cent" was formed when the die broke leaving a lump where the words WE TRUST should be.

Yours may be one of these because there are several varieties but it can also be a fake made by sanding of the words.

The coin was just a normal error that one coin dealer decided to hype and name Atheist after this any coin missing parts of the In God We Trust motto has the same name.

They sell for about $2.00

1975 penny that is mis-stamped. The "picture" is slightly off from the outer rim.

Sounds like a minor Misaligned Die error unless the misalignment is 15% or more it has no extra value.

Anonymous said...

I have a 1997 penny and on the front of the penny it has Lincoln on it like a normal penny and you can see the back of the penny that is also on the front. But on the back of the penny it looks normal. How much might this be?

Anonymous said...

Also it doesn't have any damage on it like it being smashed or anything

Man said...

1997 penny and on the front of the penny it has Lincoln on it like a normal penny and you can see the back of the penny that is also on the front. But on the back of the penny it looks normal.

Sounds like a Die Clash error when the dies used to mint coins smashes into itself because there is no blank coin in between them.
The bottom design gets on to the top die-stamp and then every coin afterwards gets the design.
These have no extra value.

Minor Die Crack and some splitting around the S, about $10.00.
But this one is hard evaluate since I've never seen the crack come from the E in that way, if you are sure it is raised metal.
It kind of looks like a gouge or deep scratch then it would have no extra value.

bag of 2,000 uncirculated 1963 canadian nickels

About $0.20 each but not that popular, the best bet is to try to sell on eBay for 10% above face value, so $110.00.

Even if you just go to a Canada bank and get $100 it would be better. Maybe get some silver coins for trade.

If real it would be worth hundreds.
If a Die Break then no extra value.

Sounds damaged, unfortunately I do not understand most of your description.
From what I gather the date is indented and the coin is thin, which indicates someone smashed 2 coin together, no extra value.

Either try to place a clear picture online then drop a link here or try to describe it better.

I would like a link to the website that states this coin is real.

There are 19 known D/D varieties for 1955 but none with a true horizontal tilt. Most are tilted a few degrees and have very little value.

It is possible a new variety was found but books and my current website network does not show this.

Miccosukee Tribe medals issued in 1968.
Limited to about 1,000 they were meant for special presentation purposes if silver.

Your pictures are not clear, it looks like a Die Clash error which would have little to no extra value. Maybe $5.00 at the most.

Were this a true Double Struck it would be at least $200.00 but the Lincoln Memorial would not be so projected out on the obverse.

No.
The problem is that no is buying copper cents because it is illegal to melt them. Unless the law changes the will be hard to sell.

Another thing is that each copper cent is about $0.02 so the profit is very small.

All that said I also separate copper but I will hold them for 30 years hoping their collectors value will also increase.

Depends on year.

Not possible a blank nickel could never fit in the penny die press.

Sorry but it is likely a fake. Try weighing it maybe it is something else.

I have a penny made in 1956 with the Lincoln Memorial on the back. They didn't start putting the Lincoln Memorial on the back of pennies until 1959. How much is this worth?

Man said...

Not possible.
A transitional error would be 1958 and one these have never been found.
So 1956 is a flat out fake.

Sorry, no extra value.

Anonymous said...

It clearly says 1956 on the penny and the Lincoln Memorial is on the back of it

Man said...

I have no doubt.
But this is impossible because the Lincoln Memorial reverse was not made until 1958 at the earilest.

1956 dies are destroyed on or before Dec. 31, 1956.

This is a clever fake.

I came across a 1975-d Lincoln cent with the mint mark slightly lower and directly below the 7 instead of between the 9 and 7 and it has a slight clockwise kink to it maybe about the 4 minute position. is this something you have come across in the past because i have searched exhaustively online and can't find anything.

The position of the mint mark can vary wildly and this seems normal. These were punched and re-punched by hand so unless there is doubling it has no extra value.

1996 Liberty Penny. Double Die Error. On the front of the penny there is an extra ridge. it's on the bottom & right sides. The top & left sides don't have a ridge at all. The Penny is in good shiny condition with light surface scratches only, but not mint. The back side doesn't contain the error.

Doesn't sound like a doubled die, instead it sounds like a Minor Misaligned Die error, no extra value.

Doubling on this year occurs on the 1996 and TRUST.

Two possibilties...
1. Somone squished two pennies at home, no extra value.

2. Some type of Die Cap error worth hundreds.

In my judgement these tend to be fake when indented but at this point only an expert in hand could tell.

Odd since these were made of softer materials they tend to have more errors were letters are missing.

That said weigh it, it may be a valuable counterfeit.

I found a 1967 penny that has nothing at all stamped on the back side. It is completely smooth. It does not even have the lip around the edge. At first I thought it had gotten sanded, so I weighed it and compared it with another penny made the same year. They weigh the same. So I believe it is a penny that didn't get the reverse side struck at all. Is this a good find? Does it have any value? Thank you.

Not possible, if a coin gets stapmed the back must all get stamped.
If something blocked it the coin would be completey out of shape and not smoothed.

If you used a 0.01 gram scale it may clear this up.

Unless there is warping this is damage, no extra value.

Hello, I have a 2001 Lincoln penny that appears to be a brockage, the obverse clearly has a reversed impression of the Lincoln Memorial as well as part of "In God We Trust" on the left portion of the coin. It also has several deep scratches on the reverse that appear to be machine made. Any chance that this is a genuine mint error coin?

Could be a Finned Rim error, the value depends on eye appeal and verification.
