An Error Penny

Do you have an error penny and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.11a

On May 22 of this year I was searching through my change at the end of the day and found a 1956 wheat cent, which was ok they are worth about in that condition.

I left the coin on my desk because I was too busy to catalog my newest find. Then a few days later I noticed some crud on the coin then I looked closer and saw it was actually excess copper between the B and E in LIBERTY.
11
Immediately I recognized it was a "BIE" error and sure enough I got my error book out and there it was as clear as day.

Here's this coin stats...
II-F-4 BIE Die Variety (W) = a die break or crack between the B and the E.
Fairly common in the years 1955-1958 and value at $1.00 to $20.00.
I figure due to all the green spots and circulation wear that mine is closer to $1.00.

For a while BIE pennies became very popular and the BIE Guild was formed. Soon so many of these errors were found that the value went down and the collectors stopped tracking these coins. The BIE Guild dissolved and now unless the coin is proof or in excellent shape the premium for this error is low.

Here is a better picture of this type of error from LeeG(an expert collector) he also found a 1956 BIE but as you see in a higher grade.Do you have an error penny and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

1459 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

Damaged, no extra value.
This type of error is not possible but often the back is buffed off for jewelry or magic coins.

Either wear or struck through grease error or a weak strike, in all cases no extra value.

To know if it is an error weigh it. If it weighs 2.50 grams it is a colored fake.

I posted about the 1992 quarter. I want to add that the head strike on the tail side is and opposite strike. Meaning that the head is indented instead of raised and the words are backwards/mirrored image.

Not brockage because then the other side would not be flattened.

This is damaged or a fake, either way not a true error.

I have a wheat penny normal in most respects except the date: in order, the digits are "1", followed by what appears to be a tilde, or a raised sideways "s" shaped marked (looks like the die slipped while minting as opposed to subsequent alteration), followed by a "5" which is considerably lower than the "1" when compared to any other wheat penny examples.

Man said...

old wheat back penny that is really thin. The details are crystal clear so it hasn't been acid dissolved or altered. Also a quarter from the 50's with several pot marks (spot like craters of various sizes)

Both are damaged.
They still have extra value because of metal content but no coin value.

Weigh them to find out exactly.

If it looks more like doubling or overlapping then it is a Doubled Die error that is about $2.00.

Yes it is a common error known as Die Break or Die Chip error.
When a die used to press the coin gets old it starts breaking the lettering is so small and fine it starts to break first. That happens often so there is no extra value unless it is extreme (taking up 1/4 of the coin face).

It is a good start keep looking.

This centered double-strike is about $5.00 in circulated. With these "eye-appeal" and high mint grade can bring it to $50 in some cases.

Ok the spike looks like an indent which means this was part of jewelery at some point.

In other words it is damaged, the back is completely smooth and straight. Were this a real error the back would be warped and have some type of bumps beyond the spike.

Sorry, no value. Great pictures though.

This is either a Die Clash error at no extra value, or a Double Struck cent at $25 at the lowest.

But without seeing it I can not be confident in giving a value, sorry.

Try Googling "die clash cent" and "double struck cent" to see which you have.

No mint mark is normal for cents.

In 1982 they did change the metal content but errors still exist.
Weigh it, a normal 1983 cent should weigh 2.50 grams.

Man said...

2001 penny erroes Broadstrike & reverse counter brockage

If it were true Brockage then yes but it looks more like Broadstrike and Die Clash which is about $20.00.

Just Broadstrike, which is the larger than normal coin with the streaks, starts at $5.00 in good.

Brockage is when a mirror image is stamped on a coin by another coin during the minting process, it will warp and bend the coin.

I have a 1917 wheat penny that looks like when the back of the penny was struck it had another penny covering some of it's back which made a penny indentation with nothing on it. About three fourth's of the back is printed and the rest is blank. The blank area is like a penny was in that area. The area that didn't get printed is like missing the area in the penny where the other penny was laying when it was struck. Is this penny worth anything?

If the front is also distorted this would be a Double Struck or Partial Brockage.
It has to verified but it would be about $50 to start.

That said it is easily faked. First try posting a picture online for others to see it maybe try contacting an expert like...

mint condition 2001 penny with an "S" minted on it

"S" means these are proof cents and should not be circulated, but it happens when collectors think they are less than perfect so they lose most of the value and are dumped into change.

In mint(PF-60) it's about $0.50.
In higher PF-65 it is about $4.00.

First get an accurate weight, it should be 3.11 grams.

Second the odd lettering and the protruding design suggest a Late Stage Die or uneven strike, either way it has no extra value.

Third, "the design of lincolns suit is different" this is not possible since only one design is ever used for all coins.
It sounds like the changes are just exaggerated by a Late Stage Die Strike meaning the die used to make the coin was old and starting to break up.

Right weigh for a rare error, if you look under high magnification and there is nothing weird with the 3 then all is left is to get it graded by PCGS or others.

I still caution that many fakes exist some are very well made, but if you are confident then spend the $50+ to have it graded.

Maybe take it to a coin club in your area for hands on opinions.

Double struck flip over which is rare and distorts the coins. It looks like a two normals sides on top of each other. check this link for nice examples...http://minterrornews.com/news-1-22-08-heritage_fun.html

I have a 1943 penny that looks very strange to me. I hold it to a magnet and it does NOT stick to it. It is missing a lot of the tails side because of wear, but every single marking on this penny is printed upside down. Sort of like looking at a regular penny in the mirror. Im hoping that this is a US mint mistake and not a fake. If you need a picture please email me sglenn108@gmail.com

Sounds like a fake made by squishing a real cent onto a piece of metal, no extra value.

what are you most proud of in your coin collection?

A 1913 wheat cent in low grade.
It was the first "old" coin I got when I was a kid and I still have it.

Although it is not worth a lot it sparked my interest in collecting coins.

1995 SERIES TWENTY DOLLAR BILL ERROR NOTE

Offset Printing, Back to Front complete about $150.00.

Best place to sell is eBay
or Heritage but the grade is a bit low.

You can try selling at a local coin shop but expect half the value.

I suspect it has been plated which leaves it with no extra value.

That said it may be an Off-Metal error but you must weigh it to find out.

Even if struck by another cent it could be done at home so still no extra value.

This type of error is really not possible, a cent is too big to be pressed in a dime press.

Plus you said "eisenhowers head" but Eisenhower is only on the half dollar.

It sounds like someone smashed a dime into a cent. Or it is some other type of error. Without a picture I can not say with certainty, sorry.

Again I know it is not lead that is impossible, if you checked out either of the two links you would see a Missing Clad error starts at about $70.00 and the coins would be Zinc.

I suspect yours is a plated fake with no extra value. But find someone who can check it in hand.

The 2010 Shield penny with a die break across the T on (CENT) I have many of these from the same batch of rolls. There is also many other die breaks on other areas, some near E.P. Unum and some on the Obverse. Along with these errors are internal rim around the coin and many of the coins have a weird edge on obverse/reverse. It is as if the coin has a corona or star burst on the edge of the interior interior. Many of these coins have the exact errors. The shield has horizontal lines between the bands. I am having a REAL HARD TIME photographing these. I have used a macro lense w/tripod/flash/no-flash. I am going to try a BMP on a scanner. I am getting it fixed. Realize its kinda hard to talk about coins you cant see. I have seen the "T" die breaks on Ebay for $0.99. But I have multiple errors and have no clue as to value.

ALSO.... I have a roll of Quarters that kinda got me back into becoming a numismatist. The 2007 Washington State Quarter has Mountains which have inclusions behind them. These are also (36 of 40) covered with grease areas around the head of Washington. The AM and RI in AMERICA are touching in many of the coins but not all. There is a (P) stamped near the head inside and it just may be redundant or an error that just looks like a (P). If you look I was able to Photograph these. They are easy compared to the shinny shield penny. I am most interested in the Mountains but the others errors are interesting as well. Please take a gander and give me your valued opinion. No extra value. Die breaks have no value for collectors unless they are Cuds.

As for the ones on eBay if you can sell them for anything over $0.01 go ahead but some people can sell sand in a desert but that does not mean it is special.

Man said...

1961 D lincoln penny, has a steel looking coating on it..

Two possibilities...
1) plated fake, no extra value
2) Off-metal error, worth a lot

Just weigh it to find out. A fake would weigh about 3.11 grams. Any other weight would determine value.

Philip Einwechter said...

I am sorry if I was not descriptive enough. Basically the whole design is moved over a tiny bit and the one side is slightly squashed. Like the rim is really wide at one side and non existent on the other.

Hope this helps!

Man said...

Basically the whole design is moved over a tiny bit and the one side is slightly squashed. Like the rim is really wide at one side and non existent on the other.

If the coin is Off-Center equally on both sides it is an slight off-center error with no extra value.

If the coin is Off-Center on unequally on either side it is a Mis-Aligned die, no extra value.

The only time these have extra value is when part of the design or lettering is cut off. Missing a portion of the rim is common.

Sounds like a Die Clash error, no extra value.

A true flip over double strike would destroy the details of the first strike except for the highest points.

What you describe is some details on the lowest points which is classic die clash error.

Not sure what you mean but and indented images means that two coins were smashed into each other this is a whole different type of error.

If you think it may be something special take good pictures of the coin and post them somewhere online. You can then link it here or go to a coin forum to get multiple opinions.

The coating looks odds since it is so smooth, I suspect replating and that left something odd around the date, no extra value.

I can see doubling but it's not clear enough. Although there are 8 known Doubled Die varieties for this coin yours does not match any.

Average is about $4.00 in fine and not replated.

Here is a good site for doubling...
http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1943&die_id=1943d1do001&die_state=mds

Look around and use the "die variety search" for more examples.

If you mean when Lincoln is upright and you flip the coin left or right the back is upside down this is normal about $0.20.

If you mean when Lincoln is upright and you flip the coin left or right the back is also upright this is an error about $20.00.

From what I understand you have a cent that is normal design except larger in diameter like it was squished.

This is a Broadstrike error about $4.00 on average, but a lot depends on eye appeal.

I have a 1930 S penny that appears unusual. I would guess it is probably in VG8 condition. There is what appears to be a bulge on the obverse. It begins above Lincoln's head, at the rim between "God" and "We", curves around the back of Lincoln's head following the outline of his head back down to just above the rim where his shoulder is closest to the rim on the left side of the device. This creates a sort of shadow effect with the gap between the bulge and the back of Lincoln's head. The bulge also appears on the right side of the device, running from the point of Lincoln's beard in a slight curve through the numeral 1 and disappearing back into the bust just below the 1. "Liberty" is entirely on the bulge. The letters and numeral 1 that are stamped on the bulge appear more weakly struck than the legend's immediately adjacent. For example, the 1 appears weakly struck while the 9 is strong and crisp. This makes me believe that the bulge was present when the coin was struck, and that it is not some later alteration. My poor photography skills make it impossible for me to get a good picture to post. Is this some common mint error that I just haven't encountered before? Thanks.

Man said...

Sounds like damage, bulges only appear if the coin was heated.

If the coin had a bulge before being minted it would flattened out.

No extra value. If you can take a sharp picture by using the macro feature of a camera that would be great but your description makes me think damage.

Not quite sure what you are describing it could be a Cud error which is a blob of extra metal higher than normal about $5.00.

Or a Misaligned Die error which is like the coin is shifted leaving blank crescent shapes only on one side the other is normal or shifted in another direction about $1.00.

I'm confused by "THE SAME PLANCHET ON THE BACK SIDE " do you mean the back is normal?

If you can post a picture somewhere and link here that may help.
