An Error Penny

Do you have an error penny and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.11a

On May 22 of this year I was searching through my change at the end of the day and found a 1956 wheat cent, which was ok they are worth about in that condition.

I left the coin on my desk because I was too busy to catalog my newest find. Then a few days later I noticed some crud on the coin then I looked closer and saw it was actually excess copper between the B and E in LIBERTY.
11
Immediately I recognized it was a "BIE" error and sure enough I got my error book out and there it was as clear as day.

Here's this coin stats...
II-F-4 BIE Die Variety (W) = a die break or crack between the B and the E.
Fairly common in the years 1955-1958 and value at $1.00 to $20.00.
I figure due to all the green spots and circulation wear that mine is closer to $1.00.

For a while BIE pennies became very popular and the BIE Guild was formed. Soon so many of these errors were found that the value went down and the collectors stopped tracking these coins. The BIE Guild dissolved and now unless the coin is proof or in excellent shape the premium for this error is low.

Here is a better picture of this type of error from LeeG(an expert collector) he also found a 1956 BIE but as you see in a higher grade.Do you have an error penny and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

1459 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

Sound like a grease filled die it does not add value, it's about $0.05

1946 S Lincoln Penny about $0.15

1966 Rosevelt Dime with js at bottom of date and no P above the date.
About $0.10

1953 Lincoln Penny and is missing the L in LIBERTY,and no Marking on it...
About $0.05

1935 Lincoln D Penny about $0.15
1984 Lincoln Penny with Double ear about $100.00 if unverified.

1969 S Lincoln Penny with a Double Die Obverse about $150.00 if unverified.
There is another worth $2.00.

Man said...

About $450.00 I'm being very conservative since they are common on this date and often found above MS-64, still it is not impossible to reach $1,000.00 at the right auction.

If I come across any recent auctions I will update but the range is too wide for an exact value.

I have a 1988 penny with a raised leaf shaped blob on top of Lincoln's head which is also covering part of the WE in "GOD WE TRUST". The raised "leaf" is the same color as the rest of the penny. Is this just an addition to the penny after being minted?

This is a Cud error where the die breaks when being minted it's about $5.00 if in a high grade.

Both dates are clearly viable. Both sides are orientated differently.

This is either a fake or a Magician's coins either way a mule like this is not possible.

It has little to no true value.

As far as I know this is not a true doubling and has no extra value.

If you think it may be true doubling then it should be seen in hand by an expert, but most doubling are just $2.00.

1922 wheat penny. the last 2 in the date is extremely faint. Also the l in liberty is right up against the edge.

If there is no D under the date or real weak D this is a sought after variety ranging from $30.00 to $650.00.

This one maybe worth the money to have an expert like PCGS grade it because some fakes exists.

1989 dime with a mis struck rim
Can you be more detailed?

Sounds like damage on a 1956-S cent, no extra value. The type of error you described is not possible but damage would explain this.

If you still think it's an error try taking a good picture and posting it somewhere for others to see.

This could be a weak die strike, adjustment strike, partial collar, or most likely a late stage die strike.

Most of those have little to no value since they are common. Unless it is extreme that half the design missing.

This sounds like damage. No 1922 dimes were made so it sounds like someone tried to make a fake from a real 1921.

Usually a 1921 is $600.00 but with this damage it may little value.

This is a Die Break or Die Crack error. It has no extra value and is common on State Quarters it happens when they use older or failing dies to press coins.
Only if the break is big and covers a large portion of the coin is it worth more.

I reckon that its worth more because its so old!
So how much is it worth??
its got a few scratches, but its still shiny! I put it with my keys to show the dealer, so i think i kinda ruined it.

Man said...

1916-D Its a dime

In good condition which is a low grade is about $1,000.00.

Even if you recently damaged it, the coin would be at least $250.00 but probably more since it is so rare.

Many fakes exist and some are made silver so it should be graded.

Although weak strikes are gaining in value you should have it graded to make sure this is just not damage.

If you still think it's an error post a picture somewhere and post the link here.

These are damaged.
Possibly someone trying to make "Love Tokens" google that phrase and you'll see some examples.

There is nothing more say this type of error is not possible only when someone sands off one side is it possible.

I've looked at all your postings and can't find one that matches what I have. It's a Lincoln penny that only has the left third of Lincoln's profile on one side (consequently no date or mint) and the right third of the Lincoln monument on the reverse. The remainder of the coin is blank on both sides. In addition, the coin isn't a perfect circle--it "bloops" to one side. Any ideas?

This is an Off Center error by your description about 75% off.
Since it has no date it is not as valuable, that said it's about $7.50 in high grade.

I have an error penny that is damaged on one side. There is no year and the word "America" is also missing. Part Lincoln Monument is also damaged.

If damaged it has no extra value.

Even if this is a Struck Through Grease or weak strike it has no extra value.

Man, the very, very thin wheat penny from 1956 looks to be a mis struck penny, the head of Lincoln can be seen fairly well, however; the type around the coin you can tell what it says. My Dad got this coin in 1959 and kept it in a "case" ever since.

I have see thin cents that keep good details, they all turn out to be damaged.

That said the only other possibilities are...

1) Off-Metal it needs to weighed to confirm.

2) Lamination when a piece gets sheered off before striking.

Both types need to be weighed and pictured for any expert online to judge.

I have a 1972 penny. The head is wider than normal and there is a line down the middle. It obviously has an error. I know it has some value because I spotted one that look just like it in a late 70's early 80's issue of the National enquirer. I was wondering what the value would be to day?

Without a picture I can not say exactly but it sounds like damage.

That said it called also be an error called a Die Crack it would be about $3.00.

Anonymous said...

The National enquirer said it was worth $400 and that was around 30 years ago.

How could I send a picture to you so you could look at it?

Man said...

The National enquirer said it was worth $400 and that was around 30 years ago.

First that newspaper is not reputable for news even less for coins.

Second without a picture I can not even imagine what you described.

Hi,
I have a 1983 penny that has been double stamped on both sides. The back side has a second picture of the the Lincoln Memorial partially stamped crookedly across the first stamp. The front of the penny has a very faint "silhouette" of Lincoln facing the left. I have good quality pics I can send if that would help.

I have a 1972 D penny that is extremely thin and in very good condition with little sign of wear. It was found in my late Aunt's jewelry box with many other coins which have proved to be worth something. I just can't figure this particular one out.

Man said...

First thing is to weigh it.
Thin copper coins often are just damage but it could be some sort of damage it could a lamination error, also try and get a good image and place it online so that others can judge before you spend any money trying to verify it.

Done by a souvenir company most likely because they got an early shipment of cents. They have no numismatic value, they are considered damaged.

That said they sell as art pieces for $4.00 or less.

The reason you can't find any information is that this type of error is not possible.

Every coin found with a blank side turns out to be damaged, this was done to make jewelry or magic coins.

I have a 1968 misstamped penny.

The front top edge looks smashed (above Lincoln's head) so the only a few letters of IN GOD WE TRUST are visible.

On the back, the edge beneath CENT is raised (like a rim) and over the ONE I can see mutliple lighter ONE stampings.

It is one i found in circulation, so has normal wear.

I've had it for years & always wanted to know its value.

Thank you!
