Canadian Pocket Change Finds

Do you have a Canadian coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Here are two pictures I recently took of all the Canadian coins I've found in my change. I've found about to 300 coins from Canada here in New York City.

The picture as you can tell was taken twice one with flash and the other with indoor lights. I'm still not comfortable shooting my coins with a camera.

This is the average condition of modern circulating Canadians. Notice the almost proof-like quality.

Here's what I've found and there average value.
Canadian Pennies: Oldest=1943, Newest=2005,2005P, Average value=$0.10
Canadian Nickels: Oldest=1964, Newest=2003P, Average value=$0.20
Canadian Dimes: Oldest=1953, Newest=2005P, Average value=$0.15
Canadian Quarters: Oldest=1956, Newest=2004P, Average value=$0.30
Canadian Two-Dollars: Only the one from 1996, Average value=$3.00
Toronto Transit Token: Circa 1954, Average value=Not sure but I've seen it for $1.00 on eBay.

As you can see I've never found a fifty cent or dollar coin, also I've found silver but no coin older then the WWII years.

Do you have a Canadian coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

820 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

Too many to list but old coins, any coin with errors, or coins in high grades.

As for links go to the top of this page and click the LINKS tab, it's a bit unorganized but there are good links there.

2. I have 5x last run $2.oo bills in number sequence. any value?
3. 2 mint $10 bills before (apx 1995) the foiling was introduced.

I worked at a bank then, and I was able to purchase these before they went into public circulation.
Am I silly to have kept them or are they actually worth more than face value?

Greetings,
I was working my metal detector today and found a 1940 Canada 25c, was surprised to learn it's silver, as it sure looks like copper.
A while back i got one of those Mackeral Dimes,
glad I researched it, also a silver.
lastly, I found a bimetal 2 dollar coin.
nice additions to my collection.
can you tell me when Canada changed their cents from copper to zinc? US changed in early 82, I keep all the copper 82s I find, only about 1 in 8 seem to be copper,
Great site you run, will be watching,
Good Day, herbie

Hi
I was reading through your posts and came across the one from Cam Richard dated June 1, 2010. I have a dime dated 1867-1992 that has a half circle down the left side. You can see where it goes through the sails, continues through the 3rd number of 1867 and into the 10 cents then stops at the bottom of the last sail. It also has strikes going from inside the base of the sailboat with another line above and below the date 1992. Do you think this would be an error coin. I also have two 2001 volunteer canadian dimes. One looks normal but the other has Elizabeth II running into the rim of the coin. Do you think is an error coin?
Thank you for your help

Man said...

Sounds damaged no extra value.

the other has Elizabeth II running into the rim of the coin.
Slight Off-Center $5.00 at the most.

If you think the first is an error trying posting a picture somewhere then linking it here.

Unfortunately normal wear or even damage can cause this.

If it were and error the quarter would be larger than normal and have an odd shape.

HI there, in July 2008 you told a gentlemen that his 1944 Nickel was probably steel as no Tombac nickels were ever found, all were melted.."Only one tombac 1944 nickel was ever found the rest were melted.
If yours sticks to a magnet it is the steel version. The edge is left unplated and that is pure steel"
I think I have one as it is not attracted to magnets....can you tell me what is'worth if I hae a real 1944 Tombac nickel?

I also made a mistake about my 1944 Tombac nickel, mine was dated 1943 instead which isn't worth anything...lol. I'll list them and could you tell me what you think.(front)There appears to be a die crack from lincolns nose to the back of his neck, the "N","RUS",and "1990" are doubled. The "D" mint mark is doubled or maybe even tripled.(back) "TED STATES OF AMERICA","E PLURIBUS" and "ONE CENT" are all doubled. Is this possible? And if so, any idea of iy's value? The condition of the coin is great with great detail.

Sounds like a Late Stage Die with die crack and machine doubling. None of these add value.

No true double has been found on 1990 cents.

I found a coin that appears to be a Canadian Quarter. It has an embossed maple leaf on the front and the year 1999 on the back with a grid of small maple leafs. But neither side says Canada or coinage value. It is silver, size of a quarter, & same edging as a quarter on its circumference.
What is it? What is its value?

canadian 1936 dime with a dot under the wreath there are only 5 knowen mine is not one of those it has a grade of about VG8

All the ones that were found have been special "specimen" strikes so they grade MS60 or better.

No circulating ones have ever been proven real.
If real about $100,000, but I suspect either a die break error, damage, or homemade fake.

Try a grading company but that may be a waste of a lot of money.

Anonymous said...

Hi again and thank you for your info on the 1936 dot dime. I have a few more questions if you dont mind. I have a good feeling its been in a bag of silver for more than 40yrs. What would a grading cost on average? what should i look for when finding a grader so i dont get taken advantage of?

Man said...

I have a good feeling its been in a bag of silver for more than 40yrs.
Unfortunately a year after the originals were melted people started faking it.

What would a grading cost on average?
Rare coins from Canada can cost up to $150 to grade and if fake you do not get your money back.

should i look for when finding a grader so i dont get taken advantage of?
PCGS is the best, but ICCS is also good for Canadian coins.

Maybe going to a trust worthy dealer or two or three for better in person opinions...

Yes.
It is silver so it's non-magnetic.

Could be an off metal error it should be weighed to make sure, if anything other than 7.00 grams it is an error worth hundreds.

But it sounds like someone plated it silver and it's starting to peel, no extra value.

Sorry but coin plating is big these days even the Royal Canadian Mint plates some of their coins but this year was not listed as plated at the mint.

Instead it was done outside the mint with so little silver that it gains no value.

In general not really, even transit tokens from the 1930s are just $5.00 on average. Newer tokens from the 1950s to present are just $1-$4 even in high grades.

I don't know all the varieties but if you think you have something rare it would better to find a transit expert than a coin expert.

Thanks for the kind words.
