Canadian Pocket Change Finds

Do you have a Canadian coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Here are two pictures I recently took of all the Canadian coins I've found in my change. I've found about to 300 coins from Canada here in New York City.

The picture as you can tell was taken twice one with flash and the other with indoor lights. I'm still not comfortable shooting my coins with a camera.

This is the average condition of modern circulating Canadians. Notice the almost proof-like quality.

Here's what I've found and there average value.
Canadian Pennies: Oldest=1943, Newest=2005,2005P, Average value=$0.10
Canadian Nickels: Oldest=1964, Newest=2003P, Average value=$0.20
Canadian Dimes: Oldest=1953, Newest=2005P, Average value=$0.15
Canadian Quarters: Oldest=1956, Newest=2004P, Average value=$0.30
Canadian Two-Dollars: Only the one from 1996, Average value=$3.00
Toronto Transit Token: Circa 1954, Average value=Not sure but I've seen it for $1.00 on eBay.

As you can see I've never found a fifty cent or dollar coin, also I've found silver but no coin older then the WWII years.

Do you have a Canadian coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

820 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

also the bravery quarter is a perfect circle mark, so i don't know how the damage got there...i'll try to get pics

Man said...

1998 quarter i believe is from an uncirculated set and is made of silver, the edge is not smooth like normal quarters

I'm unaware of any not smooth edge quarter a description of the design may help.

dime has a raised mark from the last A in CANADA down thru the 6 in 2006
Sounds like die crack it would not have any extra value unless in int condition then just $1 or $2 extra.

2008 loonie with a raised dot above the loons head the dot is about the size of one of the zeros
Sounds like a cud or die crack just like the other only extra value in mint or higher, then just a dollar or so.

Man said...

the bravery quarter is a perfect circle mark, so i don't know how the damage got there

Perfect circles are done by machines so it would be damage.
Were it a ragged hole that was uneven it might be a true error called Lamination.

Yes Canadian it's about $6.50

penny 1940 about $0.10
dime 1941 about $1.25

it doesn't say it has a first nations on the front though
Still confused it has the words "FIRST NATIONS"?
Queen Elizabeth was on 40 different countries and millions upon millions of coins. I think this is English.

1960 nickel (Canadian) the edge is normal they changed back to circle in 1963 so this is just $0.05.

Canadian silver dollar that has the dates - 1858-1958
About $10.00 mostly for silver content.

Hi Man,

I recently got a 1974 canadian 50 cent piece (never circulated) but it seems to have some errors to it. The print on both sides is not centered, the edges of the coin are smooth and round, and half of the coin is thicker than the other. Would you be able to give me an estimate on it's value?

Thanks,
CJ

This sounds like a Partial Collar error but I've never seen one in auction or sale of this year and type.
Average is about $20.00 for minor errors.

If I come across this type I will try an update the value but you want to bring it to a local coin shop for an opinion.

Definitely a 1952 since the ship was not added to the 10 cent coin until 1937, before that it was a wreath.

It's about $0.90.

I'm not sure if you still reply to people's messages, because I noticed the last post was in 2008. Anyway, I'll try my luck. I have a quarter with a linx on it, and seems to be made of a different type of material than regular quarters. Wikipedia says it's a centennial coin, so I was just wondering what the value of a coin like that would be.

The last comment was not in 2008 it was 2 hours ago just click on the "Newest" link above the "Post a Comment" box. Blogger can only fit 200 comments per page so you move to the newer page to see the latest comments.

This must be the 1967 quarter it is made of either 80% silver at about $2.56 or the 50% silver at $1.60.
There is no way to tell the two types apart.

HI, I have looked all over the internet, but can't find anything about this coin other then one sentence on Wikipedia.

I have a 2001 Canadian dime, on the back is "year of volunteers", (which I know they made a great deal of.)
The thing I'm wondering about, is that the writing around the edges, (the "CANADA, and ELIZABETH 2nd) has bled slightly into the edges.
Does this defect make the coin worth anything?
Looking for answers!
Thank you!

This is a Die Clash error that does not have any value that I know of. I would hold on to it but it really is not collectible yet.

This sounds British they are just $0.15, they are either from 1982, 1983, or 1984.

I found a 1968 canadian quarter. Its alittle banged up but its unusual because the edges are sticking out more than a regular quarter should be. It must have been casted wrong or something, but its sure funny how it feels when the edges are sticking out like that.

Sounds like a Broadstrike error.
I've never seen a Canadian Broadstrike for 1968 but they average about $20.00.

A 1969 25 cents Canada Broadstrike recently sold for about $10.00 in very-fine.

Hey there.

I was just rummaging around in some old coin boxes that I've been randomly putting together for the past 20 years or so and came across one that has me stumped. I think it's some form of 1967 commemorative, but can't find anything about it. Here's a brief description:

Smooth edge, unknown material (brassy in colour, diameter is approximately 1-1/4" or 32mm.

On the front, centred, is the Coat of Arms, with "CANADA" printed above and below; the date 1867 straddles the image (no other date appears on the coin).

On the back centre is a triple maple leaf image; above reads "THE MAPLE LEAF" and under is "LA FUEILLE D'ÉRABLE".

Like I said, I'm stumped. Everything I pull up on the net about maple leaf coins seems to be regarding bullion, but I don't think this is bullion as there is no weight indicated. Any help you could provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

This is a medal from Shell gas stations made in the 1970s, it is copper-plated zinc or some type of clad zinc mix.
They are common and are about $0.25 in fine.

They were part of a series that included every Canadian Prime Minister up till 1967. Even a complete set has little value.

Hello from New Mexico. I was recently searching the Internet for information on the small handful of foreign coins among my Mother's collection of currency and coins and came came across your blog. If you would please review my list and give us an idea of the coins' approximate worth, we would be most grateful.

The coins are all circulated with some wear but good to very good condition:

4 quarters (Canadian) 1964, 1966, 1972, and 1976; The older two are very light (silver white) but the ones from the seventies appear to have a higher amount of nickle.

1 dime (Canadian) 1949; silver, but somewhat gray (darkening).

3 five cent pieces (Canadian):
1948 (King George),
1953 (Queen Elizabeth with two small marks on her shoulder, leaves are close to the coin's edge),
1959 (Queen Elizabeth);

18 one cent pieces with the following dates: 1955, 1962 (2), 1963, 1965 (4),1966, 1968, 1969 (2), 1971, 1972, 1974, 1976. Only one 1965 cent has remnents of bright shiny copper finish.

She also has a small number of world coins (circulated, some wear, good to very good):
1950 Pfenng *D* Bundesrepublik Deutschland (copper),
1947 Two and one half cent (large--quarter sized--copper?) Munt Van Curacao lettering with a Griffin (lion?) wielding a sword on one side, flower and vine on reverse.
1939 Six Pence (dull light Silver) GeorgeIVS VI D.G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP. King George on one side, Kangaroo, sun symbol, coat of arms and emu (ostrich?) on the reverse.
1925 1 Piastre (quarter sized coin with center hole--metal content unk) lion heads on each side of center hole. Reverse: Etat Du Grand Liban with vine circling center hole.
1917 Five Milliemes (quarter sized coin with center hole--metal content unk) Egyptian lettering.
1917 Ten Milliemes (slighly larger than quarter size with center hole--metal content unk) Egyptian lettering.

Kudoes to you for an excellent and informative site. Thank you for reading my message.

Thank you for the coin values. I am pleasantly surprised by the values. We didn't expect much more than face value for the Canadian coins--except the 2 Silver quarters and dime. The other coins are a mystery to us so it was fun to get an idea of the values in dollars and cents. Thank you for taking the time to go through my list.

When my son was 11 years old (1985), a neighbour from the USA, gave him a coin. It's a nickel, dated 1985, still covered with clear plastic.
It looks like gold.
At that time, the neighbour told him it was a "special" coin. I can't find any info regarding this odd coloured coin.

Great site you have here. Very informative for beginners like me and my sons.
Thank you in advance for any info.

This was normal nickel that someone gold-plated.
As a collectible it has no extra value.
As art or a novelty item they sell for $4.00 but that is just a retail number.

I just found a Canadian dime 2006 that is off center. The image on the front and back are fine, no missing letters or anything, but there is a buldge on the top from it being off center. Also there is no ridges around the coin where there usually would be. Any idea about its value?

Thanks

Canadian 50 cent 1962. What does "heavy or heavy duty cameo"

This is not any official term but just that coin has a cameo look at any angle.

Here is what NGC has in ultra cameo terms...
"Qualify for the ultra cameo designation and, in addition, exhibit exceptionally intense contrast between devices and fields on both the obverse and reverse that exceeds by a generous margin that of the normal ultra cameo standard."

From Canada it's about $1.25

1968 copper colored roosevelt dime in very good condition.

This could be an error or a copper-plated fake you should weigh it. If it weighs 2.27 grams it may be fake but there is also an error called copperwash.

Any other weight can be a true error.

Either way at the end if you can afford it and strongly feel it is an error then maybe you want to have it professionally graded.

Although the size is right for a Wrong Planchet error there are no records for 1962 2.8 gram foreign coin made at the Canada mint. Sorry, but unless you want it graded there is no way to know if it is an error or damage.

1947 Canadian penny with a dot by the date 1974 Canadian dime the 9 has a short tail, 1963 Canadian penny , the 6 is deformed.

Apparently you have no concept of dates (time), condition, and the fact that price vary due to the metal content. I suggest you never try to price gas as you would be lost.

Man said...

i need deffinate prices
That is not possible, without seeing them in hand or have them properly graded or without knowing if you have all the varieties I cannot even give you an estimate, sorry.

Use this link for Canadian values...
http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php

For American coins try a coin mag. or a book to see what types you have and then current values.
