Piastres

Do you have a Lebanese coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Three weeks into the new year and the three finds have all been Canadian cents of little interest. While it's still nice to find Canadian cents it gets a bit annoying that this coin is the only type I'm finding recently. So I'll keep up with my foreign lot.

The Piastre is usually equivalent to 1 dollar but in the case of Lebanon it is equivalent to 1 cent. To be more accurate it is 1/100 of a Lebanon Livre (Pound). Sure checking the current exchange rate and 1Lebanon Pound = 0.000665779 U.S. Dollars. This makes the Piastre = 0.00000665779 U.S. Dollars, yes quite grim.

This is why the last Lebanese Piastre were issued in 1980. They still are legal tender but for what I don't know.

As with most coins from Arabic countries everything is repeated in both English and Arabic. The date is where most people get confused. This is a 1969 coin not a 1979. A quick look at the conversion chart and you'll see what looks like a 7 is actually an Arabic 6.

In the late 1990s early 2000s I would get quite a few Piastres in my change I can only guess an influx of Middle Eastern visitors plus the phasing out of this coin in their country created an ideal opportunity. Since then it is rare to find one in my change even if they hold little value.

Still this one is in excellent condition for a forty year old, no offense.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 50 Piastres / Lebanon
Year: 1969
Mintage: 3,488,000
Metal: Nickel
Value: $0.75 in Unc

Do you have an Arabic coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I remember reading somewhere that old British one pound notes were still being used as currency in Nigera of all places, despite being withdrawn in 1988.

Makes sense since British, American, and now the EU money is always strong.

About $4.00 for collectors but nothing in exchange rates.

I'm a bit confused about the current worth of international money. My friend gave me a bill that reads "Central Bank of Egypt/fifty piastres". I noticed that above you sited the worth of a coin, but I was wondering if it was different for a paper note? If you could please tell me the current worth in American dollars, I would deeply appreciate it. Thx very much.

a bill that reads "Central Bank of Egypt/fifty piastres"

In current exchange rate it is about $0.09.

In very fine the 1980/1981 50 Piastres notes go for about $1.00.

Just like the coin these are no longer issued and is becoming hard to find in high grades.

No such coin but you might be reading the Islamic/Arabic date.
It sounds Egyptian maybe 1950s about $2.00.

i think it is islamic as ive checked and the symble means 2, so its 1902, it does have a pic of a man with a fez with a long tail on the back of the hat and the other side has a crown on the top with what looks like leaves around it
your probly right though it wont be worth much.
thanks

Also the Islamic 0 is really 5.

This is definitely a Pakistan 1952 it is copper-nickel it's about $0.35 and very common with 6,075,000.

This is an Egypt note issued in 1961.
The bill was backdated to 1940 under that law.

The 100 Lempira were the first notes issued by the Central Bank of Honduras because of this the 1951-1973 issues are the most sought after and contain security elements not seen in most other bills.

Hi I have a 10 piastres republique libanaise bill from 1948. On the bottom: BESROUTH LE 12 JANVIER 1948 all in blue/green. On the reverse, in reddish purple all in a language I don't understand except in the center of the bill which appears to be a serial number of: B.877668. I found a lot of foreign currency from the WWII era when we sold my grandmothers house. Where is the best place for me to have these bills/coins valued. Can you value the one I described above?

The best way is to buy a cuurency book or join a currency forum.

Thank you. I am in the Connecticut / Massachusetts state line area. Can you recommend a currency forum? I would like to learn more. I have a ten dollar confederatee bill and a lot of different countries including some bills issued during the German occupation of different areas. Additionally, I have a ton of coins from different countries. I have put each individual bill in it's own sealed bag, but have not done much with the coins yet. Should I do anything special with them. Can you recommend a good currency book?

Thanks in advance as I don't know anything here yet!

Books are tricky depending on what you collect but look over these at Whitman

Why does the Lebanese piastre have French on one side?
After World War I France took over Lebanon and Syria until 1941 finally leaving by completely by 1946. So it is part of Lebanese history.
