can you tell me if there is any value to a US Penny dated 1842?
There are 2 varieties of the 1842 a small date and a large date. The value of either coin is about the same in low grades. The small date is worth slightly more in high grades. These coins are known as large cents or liberty cents this variety was is called the Braided Hair from 1839-1857.

Here's the stats for an 1842 penny...
Year: 1842 small date & large date
Mintage: 2,383,390
Metal: copper
Value: G-4 $18.00G-4 state is considerably worn but "LIBERTY" is readable at $18.00.
VG-8 state has a worn hairline with a visible ear at $22.00.
EF-40 state has detailed hair but slightly worn at $85.00.
The price differs at AU-50 only the highest points show wear and the small date is worth $220.00, the large date is worth $150.00.
At MS-63 state it has full details and only a few marks or spots and some luster $650.00 for small date and $500.00 for large dates.

Compare this to a 1942 cent which is worth $0.15 cent at G-4 and $0.75 at AU-50.

Thank you for the visit.

Hi,My name is Tina Wilson.I have been holding on to this penny for a long time.It is a silver penny dated 1959.It is really shiny, but what is making me wonder about it -is that it has a rim around it.It is not like any other penny I have ever seen. The rim is making the edges of it rounded instead of flat.Could you please help me?
Also, since I was a little girl my parents held a coin for me.They said that when I grow up I could have it.It is still at their house. It is about as big as a dollar coin and it has the pope on it.It is dated 1976 I think. What is that?

First your "silver" penny may be a penny struck on a dime by mistake.
A recent off-metal penny/dime from 1961 sold on eBay for $900.00 .

Second the Pope coins are common from almost every country. But the Pope at the time was Paul VI and he did have some medals which are bigger and worth about $50.00 if it is gold it will be worth more.

Let's see if I can dredge more info tomorrow and I'll make a post for it.

This sounds normal since the quality and standards of the mint was not great. This may be a variety but none that I'm familiar with.
Either way most of them are the same value about $18.00 good.

I was metal detecting yesterday and pulled out a braided hair cent. You cant read the date and the head and stars are very very worn, but "one cent" and "United States of America" are pretty legible. Is this worth anything?

This would have environmental damage. Even dateless it would about $5.00 or less.

Some type of overstamp I don't recognize, probably for a store, they rarely have extra value so about $5.00 unless you can find the original company.

1842 large cent about $18.00 in good.

Hello,
I have a Canadian Penny from 1842, it also has 'Bank of Montreal' on the coin.
I haven't been able to find anything about the coin from 1842, only information on other years.
Do you know its worth?
Thanks

Canadian Penny from 1842, it also has 'Bank of Montreal'

Not a coin but a token.
Banks issued these tokens minted in England because Canada lacked the facilities to make official coins until 1858.

These are common and in extra-fine it's about $22.00.
