Canada Penny Find

Do you have a Canada cent and want to find out its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I found these two Canadian cents in my pocket change today.

This brings my found Canadian coins to 251. Most of which are not worth much. They must be in a high grade to be sold or bought by dealers.

Here's the stat for these two coins...
Year: 1966
Metal: 98% Copper, 0.5% Tin, 1.5% Zinc
Mintage: 183,644,388
Value: MS-60 $0.10 (mint state 60 out of 70)

Year: 1995
Metal:98% Copper, 0.5% Tin, 1.5% Zinc
Mintage: 624,983,000
Value: MS-60 $0.10 (mint state 60 out of 70)

The oldest Canada cent I found was from 1943 at VG-8 it's worth $0.10, at MS-63 it's $25.00. The only low grade Canadian penny that is valued high a 1955 variety at about $85.00.

Sidenote: I've been using a scanner get a picture of my coins but I think I might try my camera to get more details I never did learn how to properly use the scanner, why start now.

Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins is the best coin reference in print.

2346 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

Certain Test Tokens are like that but they would say "Test Tokens"

Also a few medallions quarter size also were made but they have words around the leaves.

Was wondering who could tell me why a 1990 canadian penny is so hard to find? I've been looking for one all over and haven't found any.

Man said...

1990 canadian penny is so hard to find?

Same here, they had a slightly lower mintage and many people began hoarding them.

They are not rare or even scarce but they are harder to find.
Still there are millions in circulation.

Try here online although it is not complete..
Better is to spend $5.00 on a coin magazine or $15 on the Yeoman coin book.

Hey... where do you get these estimates?
Coin books, magazines, online auctions, forums, and dealers then average the value.
I tend to go lower then most since in my area it is easier to sell or trade coins.

And can you sell the coins somewhere at that specific price?
There is no specific price for coins, all prices are always changing. These are estimates and eBay is your best bet for higher prices.

My wife worked as a cashier in a grocery store back in 1995 and when she opened a roll of dimes she found a mint condition 1 cent maple leaf struck onto a dime within the roll. it is as thick as a dime and shiny silver as a dime but it says 1 cent and it is a maple leaf, also one side of the penny(dime) has a ridge and the other doesnt(almost like the penny die was larger than the dime could fit) The date on the coin is 1995

Not possible this is a magician's coin it is commonly sold in magic shops.

Anonymous said...

Thank you for posting back

I am an avid coin collector and this coin stumped me for a while. it has all the characteristics of a dime but is a penny. I never even thought of the magic connection. They sure went thru a lot of trouble making this coin an exact replica of a canadian mint coin though.

Man said...

Magician's coins are made from real coins.

There is always a possibility it can be something else try and take good pictures and post them somewhere for other to see and judge.

Also weigh it.

All that said I cannot see how an error of this nature is even possible.

Not sure what you mean but all 1907 Canadian cents had coin alignment.
This means if the head is correct and facing up then rotate the coin right or left the back would be upside down, like all U.S. coins.

Hi,

I seen online last night that a Georges V, 1936 canadian penny could be worth 180,000.00 depending on the condition, Is that for real?? I did some research on line and it looks like it could be a grade Fine (F)Can it really be worth that much?

Man said...

1936 canadian penny could be worth 180,000.00 depending on the condition, Is that for real??

What they are talking about is the 1936 "Dot" cent. It has a small dot under the date between the 9 and 3.
In mint state (MS) it would be worth that much, if it was in Fine it be $10,000 but then the dot would not be visible.

Man said...

I would add a regular 1936 cent is just $1.00 or so in fine.

I don't think this type of error is possible, it may be a copper-nickel error but you have to weigh it to make sure.

While going through some of the coins my grandfather had years ago, I found a 1955 Canadian penny and I believe the initials on the right side under the double maple leaf says KG. Sounds like the rare type indeed.
The final check would be the weight.
If they weigh 2.35 grams each they are the steel errors.

Granted I have heard of some people scratching of the Logo and then buffing them until they shine.

Still assuming yours are legit then they are about $350.00 each.

They should be graded if you are sure they are real.

Canadian coin one side is a cent from 1943 the other is a dime with king George the IV. The coin is not glued or soldered and is slightly (hardly noticeable)smaller than a us penny. The one cent side is copper like a penny and the other is silver like a dime. The edges are smooth.

Although you answered your own question I will agree.
I have seen these before and yes it is a magic coin, I actually have a few. Some can easily come apart others are stuck together very good.

About $2.50 but the U.S. did not make any dimes in 1922 or 1932 so it has to be some other year.
The value is for silver content.

That would be about extra-fine in coin terms about $3.50 for this dime?

I have a 1968 Canadian 10 cent piece, in what I believe to be mint condition, is it worth anything? Also I have a 1964 dong from viet-nam(that's how it's printed on the coin) and a peso from 1971 that are both in very good condition. Can you find anything on those?
