The 1947 wheat penny is very common and even in near perfect condition it is not worth much. Near perfect meaning a full red bright color, not scratched and with full sharp details.

They came in three mint marks located under the date D=Denver, S=San Francisco or blank=Philadelphia
These two 1947D cent are AG-3(about good)

Here's the stats for a 1947 penny...
Year: 1947

To me it looks cleaned or damaged or at least good about $18.00

But the details suggest very-fine at about $25.00

Hi,
Recently my grandfather passed away, leaving his coin collection onto me. going through the coins I found a 1945 and 1955-S wheat penny. both seem to be perfectly preserved - self rapped in a plastic wrap by the Littleton Coin Company. Both pennies have UNC printed on it. The 1945 penny has USA-1 on it while the 1955-S penny has USA-4 on it. What would the value of these coins be?

Man said...

wheat penny both seem to be perfectly preserved
1945 about $0.60 assuming MS-60
1955-S about $0.65 assuming MS-60

- self rapped in a plastic wrap by the Littleton Coin Company
This company is a bit overpriced and there has been some warnings among collectors.

1945 penny has USA-1 on it while the 1955-S penny has USA-4
If these are etched on the coin then none of these have any value above $0.03.

About $22.00 without the error, but you would have to describe the error to evaluate it.

This double rim is common it is a misaligned die error that usually does not add any value.

On older coins it may increase value but only if graded.

Eventually it was put back.

I have a 1946 S penny in pretty nice condition. The S looks kind of strange, though - how do I tell if it's an S over D or just the way S is supposed to look (or how it looks because of circulation)? I've been looking for photos, but I can't find anything good for comparison. The front edge of the S looks almost continuous, but I don't know if that's the way it's supposed to be. I saw one photo online, but the back edge of the S looked continuous in that one. I can't see the back edge of my coin well enough to tell. If it is an S over D, how much is it worth? Thanks.

Anonymous said...

By the way, I should add that the penny looks so good, I never would have suspected it was a wheat penny from the other side. It's very sharp and shows little wear. Except that on the front, a few of the letters are simply gone, like something traumatic happened to the penny, but there's no gouge or anything, and there's no sign of it on the other side. But that's why I'm wondering if anything could have happened to the S in circulation.

Man said...

There is only 1 S/D variety it is about $25.00 in fine.

But there are at least 32 S/S varieties.

By the way...

Ok that seems a bit odd it could be a Struck Through Grease error but check the link above to see if it a possible S/S.

Anonymous said...

Thank you for that link! I'm still not 100% sure which it is using my magnifying glass, so I'm going to try to get something to look at it more closely. It's definitely a serif mintmark. The S has got this very strong front edge, where the serif of the S seems to run all the way down to the lower curve. The S looks kind of like an 8 with a very fat middle. The "holes" in the S look almost raised and filled in.

The penny is still fully copper colored and clean, all the edges on the letters, wheat and coin are sharp and raised. Even the little dots between E and Pluribus and Pluribus and Unum are clear to the naked eye and clean. This had to have been in someone's coin jar all this time, because I just found it in my change.

Thank you for the error info, that must be it. Looking at it more closely, most of the bottom of the A is gone, leaving a tiny carat on top, plus the very bottom of the M next to it. Looks like UNITED STATES OF ^MERICA. Part of the top of the O in One is affected, it's still sort of there so I assumed it was wear -- but all the letters around and above are still sharp.

Do you have any tips for photographing coins on your site? Thank you again for the link, that's exactly what I was looking for! I'll let you know what I see when I can get better magnification. Thanks.

Man said...

For years I used a scanner because my photo skills were not great.

Then I got a tripod and used the macro settings of the camera. One or two strong lights at angles to the coin to reduce or eliminate shadows.

Aside from that just practice.

One problem with trying to identify Doubled Die errors is that dirt and time take away the fine details, so it is difficult but if you are not sure just out it aside until you can either find an expert or a great microscope.
Good luck.

No other magnetic coins were made for the U.S. but it is a possible for an error since they made foreign coins.

1925 half!...Oh,and could you explain why its worth so much?

Since in 1925 they did not issue a regular half the commemorative halves were made in fewer quantities.

Average in the 1920s was 2,000,000 per year.
1925 Stone Mountain Memorial half was 1,314,709

The 1925 Fort Vancouver Centennial half made in San Fransisco was 14,994 and is worth about $350.00.

Plus they are silver.

Just received a large bag of wheats that I bought through an on-line auction and the first one out of the bag was a 1953 Phil. mint that seems to be silver w/some copper toning around edges. The obverse is quite deep with exceptional clarity in Lincoln's hair and suit. Could this be a proof? The reverse is very shiny and clear also.

Not proof. It seems some one cleaned and plated the cent with either silver or mercury.
Try weighing it to make sure.

Sounds like a promotion coin or token, because it is very specific to that Wisconsin station it has no extra value. As for history you may want to contact that station to see when these were issued.

Sounds normal or maybe it was polished or chemically damaged.
Either it has only metal value about $0.03.

I was wondering if you know anything about Jeton Tokens? I found a Liberty Head Jeton Token, and from what I've read most of them were made of brass or copper. The one I have looks like it's made of gold. Just wanted to know if that's possible, and if so, how much could it be worth?

Unfortunately I know very little about these. Gold jetons are very rare and most are in collections and well known.

Lots of jetons have been plated over the years for jewelry. Since there are so many varieties it is best for you take good pictures and weigh and measure the coin. Without this info no one can give an accurate value.

Go to different forums and jeton sites to compare and email for more help.

I have a 1952 wheat penny, in great condition, the only thing is that the penny on the wheat side looks all silver, on the head side it looks most silver with some copper. The rim is copper but a piece of it is silver. Is this worth anything?

Someone plated a real cent, it has no extra value.
Weigh it to confirm.

My daughter has a 1942(D) wheat penny that the date has been misprinted reading, 2942. Is this counterfeit or an actual error? If an error is it worth anything?

Some sort of fake, this type of error is not possible.
Sorry, no extra value.

Die cracks like these add little to no value for most collectors.

About $1.00 but certain collectors are willing to pay more if there is progression of the crack.
