1953 D Wheat Cent

Do you have a wheat cent and want to know its value? Leave a comment

This is common enough and in circulated condition. Plus the lack of strong lights has made this image less than sharp but it is something.

Here's the stats for the coin pictured...
Type/Country: 1 Cent / United States
Year: 1953-D
Mintage: 70,515,000
Metal: 95% Copper 5% Tin & Zinc
Value: $0.10 in VF-20 (this one seems less)

I am still working on finds from the past few months and its been two weeks since I have found anything. I blame this on not buying anything, which is common in today's economy.

Do you have an old cent and want to know its value? Leave a comment

63 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

I have a 1974 penny that appears to be gold plated because it is really shiny and pale gold looking. It has no mint mark under the date. It weighs less than a normal penny and is slightly magnetic. Apart from that it looks exactly like a regular metal penny, solid thick metal, same detail, you can see him sitting in the memorial. It has a little wear indentations on the rim.

I found it in my register from a roll of penny's opened from a bank. I searched online and found a handful of people who had found something similar but the resident "forumers" where very unhelpful.

What is it? It evidently can't be a gold plated aluminum penny. Then what could it possibly be? It not a cheap novelty, but then is someone going around making magnetic gold plated pennies for fun? Are 1974 aluminum fakes plated in gold so people wouldn't be fooled?

Robert,

What is the exact weight in grams?
It could be an off-metal error.

That said it is most likely a 10k or 14k gold plated fake which would have enough metal impurities to have magnetic properties.

Oh and these are commonly made as collectibles for the uniformed collectors. Sold at $4.00+ made for about $0.04 each.

I have a 1975 D and 1979 D penny in good condition, both with the D's filled. Also a 1969 S penny that unfortunately isn't double died but looks like it might have had a partially filled die but i'm not sure. the NE C in the one cent lettering is almost invisible as well as fading on the steps. Otherwise the lettering and pictures are very clear.

Obviously a coin is in circulation if you get it in your change. But what if it looks perfect and shiney? Say a '61 D penny. I don't care that it's not worth anything, i just think it's nice. I'm pretty new to collecting and haven't learned all the lingo yet.

A simple Die Crack error that is common and has no extra value.

Sounds like a Struck Through Grease error or late stage die, either way no extra value.

It is common and these coins may grade with a high mint state if it continues to be handled with care.
That said a 1961-D cent in high mint state is just about $0.20.

I went to the post office and the electronic scale wasn't accurate enough to tell the difference. Here's a similar penny to what mine looks like:
http://www.cointalk.com/attachments/2190d1105401809-1979_penny.jpg

It is obviously not aluminum or steel, but it is slightly lighter than a regular penny. I found this online where someone makes silver "Zinc" pennies, and then heats it into a "gold" brass color: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/4932995/due_date_trailer/

It is either a brass or gold plated penny that someone made for fun. If it's brass then it has some zinc in it or some other metal traces that makes it very weakly magnetic. It's just enough that on the strong retail security magnets it can just hold it's own weight.

It may not be worth much but it is a very interesting thing to find, and a good conversation piece. I might hang on to it for a little while then give it out as change to a kid. I have a habit of getting half dollars from the bank and giving them to kids as change like i got when i was young. The silver looking pennies he made would be nice to find as well.

Thank you,
Robert,

Possibly, I have seen the video where Lye is used to make zinc coated cents and then heated. It's very cool.

I would hold on to it until you find a good scale or have an expert look at it in hand.

Hello, I just recently found a 1953-D penny. Whats odd about it is where the rim should be raised its actually dropped. Also if you look at the edge its split. I did find out thats called railroad. But, I am trying to find more information about this coin. Also what the value is. Thanks:)

Partial Collar error average $12.00 in fine. Lots of the value depends on eye appeal but most collectors want pre-1930s types.

No all 1969 cents were made of the same metal.

It could just be a high grade or someone cleaned it.
If there is an S under the date it maybe a proof coin.

At most it is $1.00 unless cleaned then just $0.03.

Sounds like damage, copper is very easy to move around.

If not then it could be a die break and struck through grease error, still this does not add any extra value since it is common.

I'm curious as to whether or not this ebay auction has a typo! I have some coins I'm trying to find the value of (one is a wheat penny) and I came across this auction. How can this be? $890,000.00???

FYI, I know NOTHING about coin collecting ... just want to know if I can get anything for the ones I have.

On eBay anyone can sell lint for $100,000. kosaka31 is either trying to get publicity or doing some kind of scam. Only 35 transactions shows a low volume for this seller and should not be trusted.

The only good thing with eBay is that there are multiple 1953 cent most for $1.00 or less if circulated. The average low value is the best way to figure out what your coin is worth.

About 8 months ago I was searching through some 1943 Steel Pennies and came across a 1953 Wheat Penny. It looked like a high grade Steel Penny due to the color (I'm guessing that's why it was in my Steel Pennies). I looked at the 1953 date and I knew it wasn't a Steel Penny (the sound by dropping it and the feel gave it away too). I just happened to stumble across your blog yesterday, hopefully you can help me! I haven't seen a non 1943 Penny this color before. The composition is definitely copper/zinc/tin (95/5) and it weighs in at 3.2g. I'm clueless as to what has caused this anomaly. I'm pretty sure that the Penny isn't painted because I found a 1941 S Wheat Penny in the same group that was painted silver and it was quite obvious (really wish they didn't do that). I have two scans of the coin in 850dpi, and any information you can provide is greatly appreciated! By the way, I have really enjoyed reading your blog and I'm sorry I didn't find it sooner. Thank you again in advance!

I checked all the possible Off-Metal strikes and none match.

While the picture is not clear there are hints at the rim that this is a plated coin. The fact that is so shiny is also a clue of electroplating. The final clue is weight usually lighter since cents cannot be made with heavier blanks. 3.2grams is just above 3.11 which hints at heavy plating.

While I'm 99% sure it is a plated normal cent you may want to find a local coin dealer or coin club to confirm this.

I have a coin that has a big stamp ( looks like a tool or wheel with gear like teeth in it ) or marking of sorts
on the face of this penny (wheat) . There is also some
deforming on the head ( Lincoln ) like some of it never
showed up at the minting. The rest of the penny is fine
and looks like this happened at the mint.

Sounds Counter-marked, a private company or mint took a real cent and stamped over it.

Freemasons and other clubs did this a lot, it has no extra value unless it list the club that did it.

Plated coins are done outsie the mint and have no extra value.

Try weighing to make sure it is not something else.

Your pictures and video are too blurry.

But the shininess suggest that it is a fake. It should be a dark brown or deep red not polished.

Still the easiest way to tell is weigh it, use a 0.01 gram scale.

--0.11oz = 3.11 grams which is the exact weight of a copper cent
Still plenty of fakes exist, try and get clear pictures.
But at this point if you think it is real then it should be graded by PCGS, that will cost $50 or more.

on the back tail it have a marck
--I cannot see it. So I cannot give an opinion.

Try turning off the flash and take more pictures until you can clearly see the details.
