Edward Kennedy Quarter

Do you have a quarter and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Gothca! Sort of.

Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington the composer, artist, and great musician is who I'm talking about. Finally, after its initial release on January 26, 2009, I got one of these quarters at this particular time. One thing that slowed its circulation was a famous doubled die error surrounding the ELL and the piano keys.

The one pictured below was plucked out of my change after an art store visit. It is not special or doubled in any way, it is not even shiny. Still I got it, leaving only Guam and American Samoa still not found for this year.

I've always been a fan of Duke Ellington but it seems odd to put him on a quarter. Yet this wasn't the real controversy. Once the design and figure were chosen a motto was placed on the coin saying "Taxation Without Representation" which was quickly rejected by the mint. The motto Justice For All was used instead.

The District of Columbia residents must pay federal taxes but they do not get a vote in Congress. I always thought this would be our 51st state quickly followed by Puerto Rico being our 52nd but that has yet to happen.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 25 Cents-Washington D.C. / United States
Year: 2009 P
Mintage: 88,800,000 (Estimated)
Metal: 91.67% Copper 8.33% Nickel
Value: $0.25 in F-12

For those wondering I still haven't found any 2009 nickels or dimes.

Do you have a state quarter and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

14 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

Not a bad portrait of him either.

Yes the bow tie is very difficult to pull off on a man but he makes it look classy.

Interesting, I work in DC but I havent gotten a Duke quarter yet. I'm also surprised that I haven't gotten a 2009 penny yet, am looking for them, they have a different reverse issued every 3 months in 2009.

Maybe in DC more people are likely to keep these and not spend them.

I'm getting them on a regular basis all but the nickels and dimes.

I have a 1982 quarter where you can just barely see the eagle in the middle and the outside 1/4" of the quarter is smooth. Is this worth anything? Thanks!

Sounds like a weak strike or struck through grease error, in either case it would have no extra value.

I found an odd quarter. It is an Arizona State Quarter, But it is much shinier than any other quarter I've come across. Also, the edge is completely silver, usually the edge of quarters is half silver-colored and half copper-colored. Also, there are two holes about 1/32" drilled into opposite edges of the quarter, it definitely looks intentional. What is it?

If there is an "S" under the word "TRUST" it may be a silver proof worth it's weight in silver.

If not then it is a plated coin made into a pendant with no extra value.

I have received a 1982 D quarter with a smooth edge all around. It is in excellent condition. On the back the leaves do not touch the eagles bottom feathers. The "adams apple" on the president is protruding a bit further than any other quarter. Amy clue?

Just sounds like a worn coin and weak strike, no extra value.

I have a 2009 district of columbia quarter that appears a little smaller than regular and has a smooth edge. It looks really odd. Can you tell me anything about it?
