1973 Canadian Quarter

Do you have a Canadian coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Featured Question from Kristie...
I Have 36 RCMP Centennial coins.
I know the large bust is worth considerably more, but I am not sure If I have large, small or some of each. They Vary in grades.
I would like to know how to tell the difference between a small bust and a large bust. 2 pictures to compare would be nice. TY!

Good question and I assumed it was a 1973 quarter from Canada as this is the only RCMP I know that had this variety. This happened because a new obverse design was introduced in 1973 but some of that year's coins were already made in late 1972 using the old design. Less than 10,000 are thought to exist.

Click on the image for a close-up comparison of my small bust in between the two varieties.
Middle-Click to open in a new window/new tab.

Here was my response..
A picture comparison would may not be completely helpful, but I will post one on the front page of my blog. From a book because I don't own a large bust.

The Small Bust has a more detailed bust and only 120 beads around the bust. These beads are slightly far from the rim.
The Large Bust is less detailed and has 132 beads around the bust. The beads are almost touching the rim.

Here's the stats for each variety...
Type / Country: 25 Cents / Canada
Variety: LB=Large Bust=132 Beads
Year: 1973
Mintage: Less than 10,000
Metal: 100% Nickel
Value: $100.00 in VF-20

Type / Country: 25 Cents / Canada
Variety: SB=Small Bust=120 Beads
Year: 1973
Mintage: 135,958,589 including above
Metal: 100% Nickel
Value: $0.25 in VF-20

Of course the higher the grade the more it will be worth.

If you have the patience you can count the beads which is the best way to do it.

Do you have a Canadian coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I have a $1 bill, series 1988A, serial C76527986A, with the Treasury Dept seal on the front offset to the left by about a quarter of an inch, so instead of being centered on the large "ONE", it's just printed over the "ON" part. Is this worth anything?

Man said...

$1 bill, series 1988A, serial C76527986A

This is a minor shift and would add about $15.00 to your bill.

More interesting is you may have an experimental web-fed press note.

On the reverse there is a number if it is next to the right if the word TRUST you have this special note.

If the reverse number is on right but at the bottom then it is normal.

In crisp-uncirculated it is about $25.00

Add the minor shift and it is about
$40.00.

Hope it's a Web Note. Good luck.

Anonymous said...

In fact, it does have a small number 2 on the back to the right of the word TRUST, and no number in the lower right corner. Thanks for the info!

Man said...

Web notes are very popular among collectors.

Known as Web-Fed Press printings they started in 1992, the 1988A was actually 1992. Instead of printing sheets of notes the government experimented with printing a giant continuous roll. Many notes came out in poor quality and mechanical issues started so the experiment was shut down.

Your bill was made in September of 1992.

Canadian Quarters are so cool, I like them alot and they are one of the most popular canadian coins right now.

I have a little story to tell about this Canadian quarter...

My great-grand-father used to collect Canadian money. So did my grand-pa... I remeber being just a little kid and seeing my grand-pa sort and protect his coins a couple times a week...

I lived with my grand-parents, and for as long as I remember, we had some kind of big wooden frame, covered with a tick glass.. In it was little compartments of seeds, candy, pictures and one that had coins...

Of course, the 1973 25¢ was in there... And when I started collection myself, I noticed that this coin could possibly be the rare one...

Both my great-grand-father and grand-father died many years ago. And last year, my grand-mother sold her house... I took back the frame, in hopes of opening it and finding out which quarter it could be...

... opened it today.

Man said...

Great story, my father also collected and I know how great it is to have memories attached to certain coins.

The coin you describe is the 1973 Large Bust which has a larger bust, more denticles, and less then 10,000 were made.

In MS-60, which is just mint state, it's about $500.00. Higher grades of course means higher values.

Man said...

Is there a difference in value between the 1973 and 1974 nickel?

Assuming from Canada in low grades there is no difference.
Only in very high grade (near perfect) is 1974 worth slightly more. This is because although more 1974 were issued less were found to be graded perfect.

I just found a stack of 20 1973 RCMP Centennial Quarters, a gift from my Mother in 1973. 19 of them appear to be the "Large Bust" version. 1) Is there an easier way to tell than counting beads? My eyes are not that good! 2) They are in "Good" but circulated condition, how is the value holding up?

Thanks,

1) Is there an easier way to tell than counting beads? My eyes are not that good!
Look at the above image notice the gap between the beads and the rim. Also small bust is more detailed.
If that is still not apparent try to take picture of the coins and using photo-software to blow-up the image and count away, (very tedious work).

2) They are in "Good" but circulated condition, how is the value holding up?
It has been going down, single sales have it at $85.00 in VF.
I have not adjusted the post above because there are too few sales to see a trend. It may be more of them are being graded at a higher level.

Oh in good (G-4) they are under $20.00. But I most circulated finds are at least fine or better.

Unless they are rare you sell them at coin dealers for 15% less than metal value.

Maybe try a coin forum and sell them privately.

Or just sell the silver at a pawn/jewelery/metal shop and hope for the current value.

Yes all 1972 and older Canada quarters were large busts, no extra value.

In 1973 they switched to smaller bust and that is why 1973 has 2 varieties.

There is no variety for the 1973 Canada Dollar only one type was made.

Again there is no Small and Large Bust variety for dollar coins.

Thank you,
A man came into a shop I work at and paid $20 with two rolls of these coins in these dates. I paid $20 to my boss to take them home. In my mind I feel lucky.

How about 1967 nickel with a hare on it, or 1945 nickel with a "V" on it, and a 1967 penny with a bird on it?

--Less luck and more you have a good eye and sharp mind. These silver coins will only grow in value regardless of condition.

1967 nickel with a hare on it just $0.05
1945 nickel with a "V" on it about $0.10
1967 penny with a bird on it about $0.03

I have a 1973 Canadian dime that was mis-stamped to the point that the beads are missing on about 1/4 of the coin (both sides of course), and metal untouched at the rim of the coin on the other side. My research so far tells me nothing on the value (if any of that coin). What do you think?

Not sure what you're describing but if this could be an Off-Center or Struck Through Grease or Misaligned Die error.

In all cases it has no extra value.

1 Russian Ruble coin,1899 & 1970 (Aniversary 100yrs from Lenin's birth)
3 German Marks coin,1913
5 German Marks coin, 1936
5 (Eastern)Germany Marks coin, 1969 (20yrs aniversary of GDR)
Thanks a lot!

Man said...

1 Russian Ruble coin,1899 & 1970 (Aniversary 100yrs from Lenin's birth) about $1.00 should be 1870-1970

I'm a bit confused but I'll assume the first number on your list means face value...
3 German Marks coin,1913 about $75.00
5 German Marks coin, 1936 about $4.00
5 (Eastern)Germany Marks coin, 1969 (20yrs aniversary of GDR) about $3.00

These are just estimates because there are mint marks that change value and the 1913 three-mark coin should be described in detail as varieties exist.

Hi,

Man said...

I am wondering whether it's worth to spend $120 to buy a VF-20 1973 large bust quarter. Or spend $300 buy a PL set of it.

I would go for the 1973 large bust quarter it has been best for value growth.

Proof-like has not grown as much, but I may be bias since I don't like these sets.

If you can afford the PL set then that may be better since it should be at a higher grade.

Ok, final answer get the PL set if still in high grade. Wait to get a higher grade 1973 LB.

Anonymous said...

Hi,
what do you mean by 'get a PL set if still in high grade'? And also in which grade should I buy a circulated large bust coin? Could you please tell me the value of each grade? Thanks.

Man said...

what do you mean by 'get the PL set if it's in high grade'

Sometimes these sets have a haze and or spots even in the original package.

Make sure the set looks great is what I'm saying.

Man said...

And also in which grade should I buy a circulated large bust coin?
--Highest you can find AU or MS, if VF is the highest you seen in a while then get but keep an eye out for trading up.

Could you please tell me the value of each grade?
--
$ 100 for VF
$ 150 for XF
$ 200 for AU
$ 325 for MS-60
$ 3,000 for MS-65

Of course this is an estimate and it can vary up to 50% from these value. Lots of time they are sold for more.

Anonymous said...

Hi,
Does that mean if I can find a higher grade single large bust quarter like XF,AU, is it better to buy the single one than the PL set? Could you please tell me the price of a PL-65 set? Btw, which one has more appreciation space, the single one or the PL set? Thank you.

Man said...

--It is best to buy the higher quality, which ever looks best is the one you should buy.

Could you please tell me the price of a PL-65 set?
--About $275.00 so $300 is a fair price

Btw, which one has more appreciation space, the single one or the PL set?
--For now the quarter is doing better, sets often grow slowly.
But both are still very good to get now.

Both are great but if have to choose just go with your gut.

Hi,
Thanks for answering my question. Also I am thinking to get 1967 coins. My friends told me it would be cheaper to buy a whole set than get them separately. Is that true? Do you mind tell me the prices for seperate ones and a set. Thanks again.

Man said...

I am thinking to get 1967 coins. My friends told me it would be cheaper to buy a whole set than get them separately. Is that true?
--Yes

Do you mind tell me the prices for separate ones and a set.
--There are 3 PL Canadian sets for 1967
1967 (pliofilm flat pack) about $20.00
1967 (red box) about $30.00
1967 (black box) about $500.00

Now if you were to buy each set broken up then it would cost 2 to 3 times the listed value. That is because they should be graded and that cost a lot.

The advantage of getting them in separate pieces is you can keep upgrading, trying for a perfect MS-70 set.

You may buy it in the original set but 3 may be Ms-67 and the remaining may be MS-60, this is true for all coin sets.

Again sets will grow value slower than separate pieces. But are less likely to lose value.

Google...
"1862 one dollar bill fr. 17"

Fr. 17 is the rare version
Fr. 17a is the common version.

Try and compare pictures if you find any clear ones. Fr. 17 has not been photo'd often. Also compare the grades.

Anonymous said...

Hi,
I phoned several coin dealers and they all said they had the large bust PL set,but not the single one. Does that mean a single one is much more rare than the PL set. And the only single quarter I found is a VF-20 one which sells for $120. I am wondering whether I should buy it or do you know where I can get a higher grade one. Thank you.

Man said...

Does that mean a single one is much more rare than the PL set.
--Not rare but more wanted. All Canadian coin collectors need this key to finish the collection so it becomes harder to find. Some people own 4 or 5 this way they can upgrade.

I am wondering whether I should buy it or do you know where I can get a higher grade one.
--Again if it were me,I would go for the 1973 large bust quarter it has been best for value growth.

Then keep an eye out in local shops or eBay to see if you can upgrade.

Yes you can probably find a PL set later.

The only way to get a perfect set is separately. But if your a fan of original packaging then don't worry about the grade.

Anonymous said...

Hi,
Actually, I am just a beginner. All I want is try my best to collect all the Canadian coin. So I am thinking may be I don't have to get a perfect MS-70 cuase I am just a beginner.

It takes years to get high grade coins, in that case get the lower coins and do not worry about grades for now.

As you get to know dealers and which eBayers and forums are good then you can start upgrading.

Good luck.

If this is the Red box set with the Silver medal then yes.

Like you would in a store just look at them closely, make sure the seller is legit, and see if they have a fair refund policy in case you are not satisfied.

Anonymous said...

Hi,
Most of the sets I have seen are in the pliofilm, not in the red box. What's the differences b/w the pliofilm one and red box one. If the set is placed in the pliofilm, then what's a fair price for it? Also I am wondering what's the differences b/w PL coins and those graded coins. Thanks.

Man said...

--Red Box had an extra silver medal.
The pliofilm sets are now about $25.00

Also I am wondering what's the differences b/w PL coins and those graded coins.
--The thing is people cut out the coins from sets to have them graded because individual coins can grade higher then the entire set.

After that two things happen...
1. Less original sets exist and a common 1967-PL set that was $12 a few years ago is now $25 going to $40 soon.

2. You have people buying the highest graded coins making an MS-60 go for $10 and MS-66 go for $150 and MS-67 go for $500.
These value rise quickly but if too many are sold they again drop quickly.

So it is up to you are you a collector of graded coins or original coins. Granted you can do both but it gets expensive.

Most of the value is going to the silver so all sets of this year goes for about $40.00.

So both prices seem fair, currently silver is rising fast and these sets will be $45 at the end of this month. Silver value is again outpacing collectors value.

It is an investment piece.

If you mean PL or Proof-Like it does have extra value.
