1973 Canadian Quarter

Do you have a Canadian coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Featured Question from Kristie...
I Have 36 RCMP Centennial coins.
I know the large bust is worth considerably more, but I am not sure If I have large, small or some of each. They Vary in grades.
I would like to know how to tell the difference between a small bust and a large bust. 2 pictures to compare would be nice. TY!

Good question and I assumed it was a 1973 quarter from Canada as this is the only RCMP I know that had this variety. This happened because a new obverse design was introduced in 1973 but some of that year's coins were already made in late 1972 using the old design. Less than 10,000 are thought to exist.

Click on the image for a close-up comparison of my small bust in between the two varieties.
Middle-Click to open in a new window/new tab.

Here was my response..
A picture comparison would may not be completely helpful, but I will post one on the front page of my blog. From a book because I don't own a large bust.

The Small Bust has a more detailed bust and only 120 beads around the bust. These beads are slightly far from the rim.
The Large Bust is less detailed and has 132 beads around the bust. The beads are almost touching the rim.

Here's the stats for each variety...
Type / Country: 25 Cents / Canada
Variety: LB=Large Bust=132 Beads
Year: 1973
Mintage: Less than 10,000
Metal: 100% Nickel
Value: $100.00 in VF-20

Type / Country: 25 Cents / Canada
Variety: SB=Small Bust=120 Beads
Year: 1973
Mintage: 135,958,589 including above
Metal: 100% Nickel
Value: $0.25 in VF-20

Of course the higher the grade the more it will be worth.

If you have the patience you can count the beads which is the best way to do it.

Do you have a Canadian coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I just found the edge of the 1 dollar coin from the 1967 PL set turned black. What should I do then? Also will it influence the value of the whole set?

It should be fine, this is tarnish and should not affect value. Keep in a cool, dark, and dry place and it should not spread.

Hi,
Do I need to seal it? Thanks.

Do I need to seal it?

Not really, but as your collections grows you should look into coin safe envelopes, coin boxes, and other coin storage options.

I mean the value of complete year set of canada King George V Era 5 cent and complete year set of King George VI Era 5 cent (only 5 cents)

Assuming fine grade...
1911-1920 about $75.00
1921 about $7,000.00
1922-1936 about $250.00
1937-1952 about $12.00

Not including minor varieties or errors.

Anonymous said...

Hi,
what if just VF grade, how much that worth?

Man said...

what if just VF grade, how much that worth?

About twice the value listed.

General rule is when it goes up one grade the value doubles.

Anonymous said...

Well, what about those circulated ones. I mean has lots of scratches on them. What's the value then?

Man said...

Well, what about those circulated ones. I mean has lots of scratches on them.

Generally circulated coins are good which is the 1/4 the value of a fine.

So divided by 4 and that should be it.

Anonymous said...

Hi.
I also have a question about the value of those PL sets between 1953 and 1967.

Man said...

value of those PL sets between 1953 and 1967

Not including errors or varieties...
1953-1958 about $200.00 each
1959-1961 about $45.00 each
1962-1967 about $30.00 each
1968-1994 about $5.00 each
1994-2011 about $15.00 each

Of course this is Canada and dozens of varieties exist, too many to list I suggest buying the Charlton Canadian Coin Book.

Could you please tell me how to tell a 1953 LD from SD?

What denomination? 50 cent? dollar?

Anonymous said...

Oh sorry, I forgot to say that. It's the half dollar. Thanks

Man said...

Could you please tell me how to tell a 1953 LD from SD?...It's the half dollar.

In the LD the 9 is long and pointy the tail extends beyond the end bottom of the 1.

In the SD the 9 is almost even with bottom of the 1.

Anonymous said...

Hi,
I know there are 3 varieties of the 1953 half dollar. What are the prices of them? Thanks

Man said...

50 cents 1953 - Small date - NSF about $10.20
50 cents 1953 - Large Date - NSF about $20.00
50 cents 1953 - Large Date - SF about $10.20

Anonymous said...

Hi,
That's the price for VF?

Man said...

That's the price for VF?

That is the price for G to EF since it's silver.

Starting at AU it increases to $13 and $40 for the Large Date - NSF.

Anonymous said...

Hi,
Thanks for answering my question. Actually, I have another question. What kind of date can be thought as a key date? Also I am wondering why 1955 coins are more expensive than 1954 and 1953. Thanks

Man said...

What kind of date can be thought as a key date?
--1953 to 1955 since it has all those varieties. 1921 nickel is key. But most Canadian coins are common.

Also I am wondering why 1955 coins are more expensive than 1954 and 1953.
--The NSF was corrected early in 1955 so it was made less.

Anonymous said...

Hi,
But how come 1925 and 1926 nickels are way more expensive? Are they also the key date? How can I know it a key date or not, just because there are many varieties in that year? Thanks

Man said...

1925 and 1926 nickels are way more expensive? Are they also the key date?
--Yes, the reason for these 2 years is a very low mintage, about 200,000 for 1925.
1921 had less than 500 survived it is very rare.

How can I know it a key date or not, just because there are many varieties in that year?
--You need a book or magazine dedicated to Canada coins, it will explain varieties, mintage and others you need to know collect properly.

Hi,
Actually I have 'Canadian coins' this book. Maybe I should read more carefully later. One more thing that I want to bother you. Could you please take a look at the following ebay link and give your opinion on this 1953 LD NSF. Thank you.

Anonymous said...

Hi,
Yup, it's a Charlton one. For this book, do you think the prices listed in this book are a little bit higher than the market prices? And for the LD NSF coin, in your opinion what's the grade? Thanks

Man said...

Yup, it's a Charlton one. For this book, do you think the prices listed in this book are a little bit higher than the market prices?
--Yes I notice that too auction values were much lower than the book value. But the book at least the 2009 had great info and explanations. I've seen the newer versions of the book and they split it and took some nice references. Still great book.

And for the LD NSF coin, in your opinion what's the grade?
--It look VF since there little hair detail.

Anonymous said...

Hi,
For the book, you think the 2009 version is better, right? What kind of coin can be judged as a EF one? Thanks

Man said...

For the book, you think the 2009 version is better, right?
--Not better but very-good. They split it into 2 books which annoyed me. Any recent version is fine.

What kind of coin can be judged as a EF one?
--The hair and leaves should clearly be separated.

No.
1999P, 2004, and 2006.

Anonymous said...

Well, I can understand why the 1999P set is expensive, but I don't know why the 2004 and 2006 are that expensive as well.

Man said...

Well, I can understand why the 1999P set is expensive, but I don't know why the 2004 and 2006 are that expensive as well.

They all hover between $50-$75.

They never were popular and the 2004 and 2006 sets stayed about 10,000 minted each.

1999 was sold for $99.95 and dropped to $50 value in MS-65 for years.

Then the later sets sold at $49.95. Now thanks to grading they are picking up value but they may fall again.

Anonymous said...

Well, is it a good time to buy the 1999P set now? Will the price fall again?

Man said...

is it a good time to buy the 1999P set now? Will the price fall again?

If you can get it for $70 or less. I suspect that collectors will send them for grading and prices will fall depending on how many are graded.

Anonymous said...

What does that mean? Does that mean the more graded coins the lower the prices will be?

Man said...

What does that mean? Does that mean the more graded coins the lower the prices will be?

Usually the grading cycle goes like this...
Coin-set X comes out worth $100

A while passes the coin-set drops to $50

Collectors on mass start grading them.

Coin-set X ungraded stays at $50 and the graded ones go to $300.

After a few years graded sets drop to $150 and ungraded goes to $75.

After 10 years if too many sets are graded the ungraded goes to $120. If not they go back to $50.

This is general but a cycle that most are aware of this way you can avoid buying when it is too high.

Anonymous said...

Well, in this case, if I can get the 1999P set ,say for 50/60 dollars, is it kinda a good deal?

Same as other coin sets make sure it is not tampered with all the coin are unscratched, no spots, and haze have not formed.

Anonymous said...

What if the plastic film of the set is broken? Does that influence the coin?

Man said...

Yes the sets should be air tight.
Broken means it may have been tampered with and value drops below $50.

Man said...

can you give me your opinions on anything that could be looked for in common change that has value or might in the future?

Older coins, generally 50+ years old.

Errors, you know what a normal coin looks like so anything weird should be set aside.

High quality, even common coins may carry a high premium in the future if near perfect.

For specific years and coins just get a coin book, even if not current, and try to memorize the few coins that are rare.

You can't tell which is which on that side.

That's okay, now I see the confusion.

Only 1973 used Small Bust except for about 10,0000 errors.

So by 1974 they returned to the Queen's portrait that had been used on the pre-1973 issues.

Yours is a Large bust 132 beads but that is normal. Nothing special although I did see a die break over the caribou's eye. Still no extra value.

Mark said...

Ahh okay thanks, I just thought I'd give it to someone who cares if its rare rather than roll it up and take it to the bank if its worth something.

1973 quarters that the strike is off center fairly noticeably. Is this a mis-strike? Any additional value in these?

Possibly but the Off-Center should be 15% or larger to have any real value.

Small Off-Center errors do not add value since they are not that collectable still ebay averages $2.50, but eBay is a bit unrealistic.

I have three 2013 one dollar bills from the us. They are consecutive serial numbers. The numbers are
E 40131516 B
E 40131517 B
E 40131518 B
Do these bills have any value at all or should I just spend them

Hi Man, after reading your blog, its apparent you have the patience of a saint. This question is out of the scope of your criteria, but I'll ask anyway because I can't find any info myself. I have a 2007 caribou quarter with a "P" mark where normally the "RCM" logo is. Any info you can shed on this for me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Man

I have a 1973 large bust quarter (RCMP/Horse) how much is it worth?

2007 caribou quarter with a "P" mark where normally the "RCM" logo is.

Also searched everywhere this coin should not exist.
If it is a new type of mule the it would start at $10,000.

It should be verified in hand because there are a few ways to fake this coin.
