I See Stars

Do you have a coin/bill and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Just replying to questions I think most people should keep in mind when looking through your bills.

what does a star mean next to the serial number on a dollar bill?
A star means that some notes were damaged when made at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. To replace these notes the government uses notes with a star on them this way they don't have to replace notes with the same serial numbers. Less then 1% of notes are star notes.

how much is a 1950D $5 bill worth with a star next to the serial number?
It depends on the serial number and condition.
The I-* is at most $200.00 in crisp-uncirculated.
The K-* is at most $175.00 in crisp-uncirculated.
All others are at most $100.00 in crisp-uncirculated.
divide by ten if in less then perfect grade.

some of the new $10 bills also have the star?
Lots of the new bill have this and at first the were rare but now they are worth only a few dollars over face but the DH-* are the most sought after.

is there anything special about them?
Many collectors like them but they are sometimes overpriced. Those from St. Louis(H), Minneapolis(I), and Cleveland(D) are always key districts.

Do you have a coin/bill and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Not all, mostly those with 640,000 or less printed.
Also the higher the grade the more it will go up.

This is a low printed note at 640,000 it is also one of the highest value note for 2001.
St. Louis notes also have a premium since they are made much less then New York for example.

If Choice-Crisp-Unirculated (CH-CU) it would be $75.00.

The only way to tell if it will go up in value is how many get graded (CH-CU). You can check PCGS or NGC every few months to see how many are graded. If many are graded high yours will go down in value.

--Best Currency Book

How do you know the price?
--I keep up on books, magazines, forums, and auction sales. Then take the average for each grade.

If i wanted to sell these how would i find proof saying that these dollar bills cost X amount?
--You won't these are average values.
Even the book is just a guide, thanks to eBay you can get notes for even less and of course many are overpriced on purpose.

The ultimate standard is the monthly Greensheet which is what dealers use to set prices. It is the best "proof" but often varieties and specific serial numbers (like low-numbers) are not listed.

After being a collector for a while none of these are needed often since you can see patterns and know if certain will sell poorly.

Thanks for your expertise..

Why are some star notes worth more than others, regardless of the year?

What is the DINAR IRAQI dollar worth? Description: Saddam Husseins's face on it, or the ones of him in military uniform? I have a few.

Have you ever heard of a 1987 coin with Saddam Hussein's profile wearing Beret on one side (Forged not Stamped), and OLYMPICS written on the other with date 1987 in Roman numerals. Its about 3.5-4 in. in diameter.

How about a 1942 nickel, U.S in good condition but some wear?

Do you know about transference of wealth? from silver to gold coins? Could you give advice on it?

Because of the economy and the way the money is constantly fluctuating, would it be smart to sell it now to a collector or in 20 years?

Man said...

Why are some star notes worth more than others, regardless of the year?
--Too many to list generally the ones with 640,000 or less printing.
Check here US Paper Money when you find a note to see if it low printing or not.

What is the DINAR IRAQI dollar worth? Description: Saddam Husseins's face on it, or the ones of him in military uniform?
--If you mean a note they have little value above a few cents, only the 1991 100 Dinar with him in a suit has a larger value of about $15.00.

Have you ever heard of a 1987 coin with Saddam Hussein's profile wearing Beret on one side (Forged not Stamped), and OLYMPICS written on the other with date 1987 in Roman numerals. Its about 3.5-4 in. in diameter.
--As far as I know Hussein never wore a Beret on any coin, and there Olympic medals had the an animal and rings.
Either this is some type of private medal or not Hussein, either way if it has no value it is not a coin.
Only a picture would help.

How about a 1942 nickel, U.S in good condition but some wear?
--Assuming not silver about since no mint mark was mentioned, about $0.15

Do you know about transference of wealth? from silver to gold coins? Could you give advice on it?
--Not really, I tend to keep this as a hobby and not an investment.

Because of the economy and the way the money is constantly fluctuating, would it be smart to sell it now to a collector or in 20 years?
--Well my thing is if you need the money now then sell.
If your goal is simple profit then set a profit limit and just for it to reach that goal.

Understand the market, for standard metal (copper, silver, gold...) coins just hold onto them.
For errors, notes, oddities, commem., varieties, or anything "special" sell now if you can make a profit.

Yes this is Muled but generally I think they were evenly muled and normal for the uncut sheets of 1981.

About $160.00, the reason no extra value is that in graded examples they are found easily.

I have a series 1957A one dollar silver certificate with a blue stamp C59161849A, its kinda beat up with a brown mark on the left side of Washington's head. Then I have a series 1953B five dollar note with red serial numbers C36835087A, its fair condition, 3 folds. And I have a series 2009 F6 twenty dollar bill serial number JF02159669 with a star at the end. The serial number at the top left, the '9669' is slightly lower than the rest of the number. It is crisp with no folds. If you could let me know if they are worth holding on to, that would be great. Thanks.

--About $25.00, I do not think the lower serial number add value but Turned Digits if confirmed add another $25.00, but usually only one digit is lower.

Ok, thanks for letting me know. I also have some 1982 and 1983 quaters. I've been told that these are worth money also. Is there any truth to that?

1982 and 1983 quaters

They were struck very weak and most are not sharp, they have no extra value.

But, some are very sharp and high grade and are worth much more.

1981 in Mint State-63 is about $1.00
1983 in Mint State-63 is about $21.00

I have a 1950A ten dollar bill in pristine condition with the exception of a small squiggle from a counterfeit marker. On the back it only has one upside down flag. The back plate #1467.Do you have any idea what this may be worth? Thank you!

I have two star notes and I am a delivery driver so they are not crisp but at the same time they are not too badly creased.
$1 bill 2009 D00050463*
$20 bill 1985 D04190273*
The twenty also has 1600 written on it next to Jackson in red ink.
Than you in advance.
