I See Stars

Do you have a coin/bill and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Just replying to questions I think most people should keep in mind when looking through your bills.

what does a star mean next to the serial number on a dollar bill?
A star means that some notes were damaged when made at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. To replace these notes the government uses notes with a star on them this way they don't have to replace notes with the same serial numbers. Less then 1% of notes are star notes.

how much is a 1950D $5 bill worth with a star next to the serial number?
It depends on the serial number and condition.
The I-* is at most $200.00 in crisp-uncirculated.
The K-* is at most $175.00 in crisp-uncirculated.
All others are at most $100.00 in crisp-uncirculated.
divide by ten if in less then perfect grade.

some of the new $10 bills also have the star?
Lots of the new bill have this and at first the were rare but now they are worth only a few dollars over face but the DH-* are the most sought after.

is there anything special about them?
Many collectors like them but they are sometimes overpriced. Those from St. Louis(H), Minneapolis(I), and Cleveland(D) are always key districts.

Do you have a coin/bill and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Nice, first if you read the post star notes are replacements for damaged regular notes. Since they are replaced before they reach the banks then most banks don't know they'll receive star notes.

First with collecting these notes is condition, the better quality notes should be kept despite value. Lower grades only keep if valuable or rare.

I made corrections or eliminated elements from your list as warranted.

$100.00 in 2003-A and 2003 series

To add some advice all the worn or less than crisp bills would be nearly impossibly to sell for profit.

Unless you're an eBay genius.
Just use them normally.

I would suggest keeping the $1.00 bills and possibly the $20.00.

I was just given a bank banded pack of crisp uncirculated $20 * notes! I was amazed to see that it is 100 consecutive notes - 2004A Series GK00297501*-GK00297600* with signatures by Cabral and Snow and K11 in the top left. Any ideas on value? I am not a currency collector and do not even know where to begin...

2004A Series GK00297501*-GK00297600*

These are very common and very new at most each would sell for about $30.00.

Looking over recent auctions they are selling for about $21.00 which is not worth the effort.

It would take years and an upswing in the economy for these to gain any good retail value.

I would suggest keeping the 2 with the lowest serial numbers and just using the rest.
Of course if you can afford to keep the whole thing it's fine but not profitable.

Corners are key to a good note, I would say about $1,000.00 this is the most common of the $500 bills.

You did very well in my opinion. If you plan to resell the market for these is not good now.

I got a five dollar bill out of an ATM several years ago that was missing most of the printing on the front. It has the green seal, four 6's and both serial numbers (F05354708A). It doesn't have the security thread, but I don't remember if that was in effect back then. The back looks fine except for some ink that appear to have bled onto it. It was crisp and obviously new.
I have kept it in a clear plastic dollar envelope. Three of the four bills were in sequence. The bill after the one with error skipped a number. A few months after I got it I saw a ten dollar bill with the same error in the Tampa Tribune and it was value $300 to $350. Any idea on its value?

About $650.00 but this is a rough guess as the note itself is about $550.00 and the error is just another $35.00 but since it is already graded another $65.00.

Shifting among North Africa notes is common.

It would be impossible to know since many could have been caught and destroyed by the government but thousands could have escaped.

It will go up in value every time a new $10 design is made but since it is so common in 20 years it may be $15-$20.

As an investment you are better off buying $10 worth of cheap silver coins or a modern lightbulb.

It's about $250 to $300 latest auctions have been low but on average it is $300.

These bills were printed in 1930 to 1932. So it is about 78-80 years old.

The Mule is for the 4-digit back plate number that was leftover from the 1977-A series. Non-Mules have 3-digits or less.

These notes are not as rare as thought, it is possible to pick-up a changeover pair for about $40 in Gem-CU.

Yours would be about $60-$100 maybe more depending on auction.

Man said...

TO ME IT LOOKS LIKE A DOUBLE IMPRESSION ON THE "BLACK" THIRD PRINTING, AND DOUBLE IMPRESSION ON PARTS OF THE SECOND PRINTING..?..CAN THIS BE??

This looks faked to me.
As you know the only elements of the third printing in black are the plate numbers and seals.
In all double printings of the 3rd printing the serial number is always doubled.

Were elements of the second printing also doubled it would include the fine design.

This looked like someone scanned and copied what they thought were "black 3rd printing".

This kind of error can not exist, you may want to look under a microscope or find a local dealer with a strong magnifier to see if the inks are different.
Someone needs to see this in hand before you even think of sending it be graded.
