True Values, Not Really

My most frequently asked questions about coins.

How much are my Canadian coins worth?
  • Not much...
  • Canadian 1 cent from 1938-2005 are worth $0.10 on average.
  • Canadian 5 cents from 1922-2005 are worth $0.20 on average.
  • Canadian 10 cents from 1968-2005 are worth $0.15 on average.
  • Canadian 25 cents from 1968-2005 are worth $0.30 on average.
  • Error, older and other exceptions make some of the above listed coins more valuable.
What is this collectible Canadian 1945 silver quarter valued at?
  • About $1.00 American but most Canadian silver coin is worth BV or current bullion value, which would make it more valuable only if silver prices are $7.00 or more an ounce
What are Canadian error coins worth?
  • Like most true error coins much more depending on the error. Ex: A 1955 Canadian penny with strap $0.10, without strap $85.00. A minor barely noticeable difference.
What are the old wheat penny prices? How much is an old penny worth? What is the rarest wheat penny? Info on old wheat pennies now or I'll stab you? Wheat back penny value?
These are all about the American penny.
  • From 1909-1958 they're worth on average only $0.15. Sorry!
  • Some are worth less and some a little more.
  • The better the condition the more valuable in almost perfect, red, unscratched, uncleaned and sharp detaied they can go for thousands, but those are hard to get in pocket change or coin jars.
  • Yes the 1909 pennies are the rarest but in particular the 1909S VDB in low grade goes for $500 and in high grade $1600. Certain error pennies fetch an equally high price.
What is the value in money of 1943 steel penny, 1955 and 2005D American penny?
  • 1943 any mint mark about $0.25-$0.35 in fine condition. Again sorry!
  • 1955 if normal about $0.10, an example with a doubled date(error) $1,000-$10,000.
  • 2005D fresh and sharp this Denver mint cent is just $0.20.

I need a 5 cent price guide, especially for my 1913S Buffalo Head Nickel?
  • Liberty nickels from 1883-1912 are worth $2.00 on average.
  • Buffalo nickels from 1913-1938 are worth $1.00 on average.
  • Jefferson nickels from 1938-1958 are worth $0.60 on average.
  • Yes, yes there are exceptions to the rule but come on, be for real.
  • 1913S is worth $38 on "raised ground" and $300 in "recess" and this is in low grade. This is a good find.

1926 standing liberty quarter how much is it worth?
  • 1926=$3.00 , 1926D=$7.00 , 1926S=$5.00 it is silver.
  • From 1926-1930 they're only a few dollars.
  • From 1916-1924 they're worth a lot more.

What is the value of a ten dollar Las Vegas silver coin?
  • I've got no idea what your talking about more details or maybe a picture can help.

This was just a small sample of what I'm asked. I also collect foreign coins and paper money from around the world.

Do you have a question about what I just wrote or need more information on a coin you have and its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Hi there. I was wondering about this penny I found yesterday on Christmas Eve.

I found it in the oddest place I think one can find a penny of it's age: In my wallet. Now, I'm not going to pretend to know what I'm talking about, as I know incredibly little about coins. My knowledge runs as deep as a quarter is worth 25 cents and you can't buy a soda from a machine with a Canadian quarter.

I've never seen a penny like this before. Honestly, I've never seen an old penny before in my life considering I'm only 24. It's dated 1948, and has a letter under the date. It's kind of hard to read, but looks like either an 'O' or a 'D'. It has impressions of wheat stalks on the back, and what seems to be a crack on the left side.

I was wondering if you could possibly tell me what it's worth? My dad said I could get a dollar for it, but I think he was joking with me since I was pretty excited by finding an old penny.

Thank you very much,
Jezza

Man said...

Yes these are Wheat Cents the were made from 1909 - 1958. Either D (Denver) or S (San Francisco) mint.

The 1948D is worth $0.10 in very fine.
But with a crack on it across the stalks is about $1.00 if the crack goes across the coin or is better then very fine condition it may fetch a few bucks more.

Your dad was right an error coin from circulation it is about $1.00 or less.

Nice coin.

I have a 1948 penny and it looks like a regular penny except for the back. There's no letter underneath the date but on the back, it's not the same as the regular coins. In the middle, it says one cent. How much is this worth? Are there any coin collectors in Bradenton,FL?

Anonymous said...

Is a $2 bill worth anything

This is normal for older cents. In circulated condition it is about $0.05 but most dealers are only paying $0.03 for the metal value.

Are there any coin collectors in Bradenton,FL?
Try going to coinlink.com and looking for shows in your area.

Is a $2 bill worth anything
Pre-1976 is worth more than $2.00 on average. Post-1976 is just face value in most cases.

I have a 1947 steel/silver colored penny from an old bag of wheaties. Can't find any mention of this coin

Man said...

1947 steel/silver colored penny

That is because it only came in copper. So you either have a fake or an error,

The first step is to weigh it. If the weight is 3.11 grams then it's a fake.

Any other weight then it might be a valuable error. After that you need to take a very good scan or photo for submission to experts.

Could you please tell me if it's an error if a wheat penny doesn't match up back and front? What I mean is... pennies today match up... if you look at the Lincoln straight on and then flip it over evenly you will be looking straight on at the other side. Were older wheat pennies like that or did they not match up? My 1926 wheat that I just found doesn't match up so I wondered if that was normal or an error. Thanks!! :)

This is called coin alignment it is normal on U.S. coins. Just like you describe all U.S. coins even older ones should "flip evenly".

The error is called rotated die alignment and goes from 1 to 180 degrees and can be worth hundreds.

You need to find out exactly what degree your error is to find the value. Less then 45 is usually only $2.

what australian 50cent pieces were valueable and what ones where worth collecting
1966 because it's silver
Anything that is proof still in the special packaging.

what australian 1 dollars are worth keeping
Special issues from 1992,1994,1995 and any other that is proof or came from sets.

Generally the ones that were circulated have face value but the special ones like the Olympic dollars average $25.00.

british sixpences, half crowns,2 shillings and shillings are worth dates vary from 1946 to 1950's

1946 and before are silver and have extra value about $1 or $2.
After 1946 most are about $0.10.

Thanks for the info , here's the reference
For all years from 1895 to 1901 the "Old Head" bust was used, with the inscription VICTORIA DEI GRA BRITT REGINA FID DEF IND IMP, while the reverse was similar to before although the ship was no longer depicted. The first year (1895) had two varieties, one with Britannia holding a trident 1mm to the left of the letter 'P' in PENNY and the other depicting her holding the trident 2mm away from the P of 'PENNY' (this variety also has NO sea behind Britannia). The latter is quite rare. The 1897 penny also has two varieties, one of which has the tide level to Britannia's left as high and another, more common, as normal. 1901 pennies were kept back as keepsaves as the Queen died on 22 January that year.

Man said...

, here's the reference

That only talks about the 1895 not the 1896.

1860, 1895, and 1897 all have valuable varieties.

i have a penny from 1926 and it looks like it was stamped and then accidentally came out and flipped over and got stamped again. so on heads side up you can abe's head just fine, but also "one cent" and other trace images used on the die for the tails side, at about 15 degrees offset. on the tail side, there is a trace image of abe's face and the pressing of it has smudged the text of the tail side. would this be considered a valuable error coin?

These start at $40.00 but need to be verified and graded, it can easily be faked so real ones can go up to thousands.

1857-1992 Canadian gold wheat penny

About $0.01 it should be 1867-1992 and the gold-plating is not from the mint and does not add any real value.
