That Old Penny

Do you have a wheat cent and want to find out its value? Leave a comment and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

One of the most collectible coins out their is the "wheat cent", called this because the back contains two stalks of wheat. First minted in 1909 and and last minted in 1958 for and by the United States of America. Like most coins, even in it's most worn down, state it will retain face value. The least one of these coins* can be worth is 1 cent. The most a low grade circulating wheat cent can be worth is about $460 - $550 (US dollars). High grade or near perfect wheat cents can go for $20,000 or more.

The front features are just about identical to todays modern pennies. The grading of these coins depend on how clear all the original features are and how unblemished it appears, just like choosing a cover girl, with one exception. The coin can not ever be polished or altered or it may revert to it's original face value.

The oldest penny I ever found out-of-pocket was from 1913 and had a red book** of about $0.85, the rarest, in terms of amount minted, I found was 1936S valued at $0.15 and the most valuable penny I got out-of-pocket was a 1916 cent in very fine condition, value: $2.00.
Prices of coins jump around wildly so don't hold these values for long time speculating.

Foot Note:
* coins maybe worth less than face value if altered, damaged or the government behind it no longer recognize that currency
** red books give the average retail value you would pay for a coin from a group of associated retailers and blue books contain the price you would expect to sell the coin for, divide the red book price by ten and that is the average selling price.
EX. 1936S cent: red book you buy at $0.15= blue book you sell at $0.02

376 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

This is a commemorative half dollar to honor Black Americans the coin is fairly common in all grades, it's about $20.00.

wheat penny 1910 S about $16.00 in good.

Sounds lie a Struck Through Error or maybe damage either way the way you describe it has no extra value above the 3 cents metal content.

This is a variety not an error and it is very common.
Assuming Mint State 65 (grading is 65 out of 70) then each cent is about $0.30.

One problem is that you will be flooding the market with high grade coins which may lower their value, selling them in person all at once you may get $0.10 to $0.15 per coin. Selling then in smaller lots is better.

I just came across a 1914-d penny. I know it's a good find (just through some research), but I'm not sure what to do next with it to make sure I am getting the best value. Thanks!

It's about $215.00 in good, you need to get this graded as many fakes exist, plus every grade higher adds more value.

Man said...

Try PCGS for the grading the charge is about $40 and you have to become a member but for this coin it is worth it.

Marc said...

Thanks for responding. I'm pretty confident it's not a fake. I saw some of the fakes online where people took a 1944 and changed it. This looks pretty clean. The penny is quite brown with bits of red. The front is clear, but the wording and wheat on the back seems a bit flattened out.

The way you describe it it might grade a Good (G-4) or Very-Good (VG-8).
I'd be worried that it may have been cleaned which would knock out all the value but having it graded is you best bet.

Because of two things...
1) It is common 185,262,000 were made and many survived in high grades.
2) Grading I assume is good (G-4) which is low.
The higher the grade the more it is worth, but even in Mint State (MS-60) it would only be $8.00.

Not possible this is outside damage.

If you still believe it is an error post some pictures and have several experts or a coin forum look at the pictures but this type of error is not possible without severe coin deformation.

Anonymous said...

1916 penny, without a back, it is clearly a manufacturer mishap.

Well I found the penny in an old steel coffee can collected by my great uncle. I know for sure it was collected in the early 80's along with hundreds of other wheat pennys. I just don't see why anyone would go through that trouble and just throw it in a can full of others?? It is just so perfectly smooth without any scratches?? im guessing there probably were others made before the problem was corrected and they were not kept or just used and lost. I'll do my best to get pictures for you.

Man said...

1916 penny, without a back, it is clearly a manufacturer mishap...It is just so perfectly smooth without any scratches??

That proves even more it is damage made by someone with a sander.

This was done plenty of times in the late 19th century and early 20th century to make love tokens.
People smooth one side and put initials of their loved one.

A coin getting pressed must have two side to get made.
If one side is missing the coin gets horribly deformed called a die cap error.

If two coins are pressed at the same time they would have larger/broken rims and a wavy effect of the one side being that is unstamped.

Sounds like a Sovereign from Australia on average $350.00.

But a lot depends on the mint mark. Look above the 92 of the date, on the ground below the horse.
Either a M, P, or S should be there, tell me which it is to give a more accurate value.

Did I get ripped off?

Man said...

1909 wheat penny s...

I'm assuming you meant 1909-S.
Not a regular 1909.

And a 1909-S is about $100.00 in good condition (a very low grade of 4 out of 70)

If it was a 1909-S VDB (with a tiny VDB on the back bottom) it's about $850.00.

Dealers often offer have half the value but I assume yours could have graded higher and should be worth more if sold on eBay.

That said $40 for a cent is not bad.

Not original.
Blank cents are the same size as the finished coin. The metal sheets they are made from are first cut out like Swiss cheese the the coin is pressed. It is not possible to put that large disc into a coin machine.

This is either a pressed fake or part of an encased cent which was common used in the 1920s as lucky charms. Unless you have the entire casement, no extra value.

Also the picture is quite blurry so I can't tell if the coin is real or not.

how much would it be worth in 2038?
--About $0.30 in good
In 1997 it was $0.05, in 2008 it was $0.10 so it seems every ten years or so it gains 5 cents in value.

P.S it dose not have a D or a S what dose that mean?
It means it was minted in Philadelphia.
D would be for Denver
S for San Francisco

I'm sorry I do not recognize this piece, the only think I can think of is gold sovereign from Australia but it does not have "500" on it.

No sovereign has "500" on it, maybe be a fake or copy. If you can place a photo online and link it here that would be helpful.

Regardless of year the coin has lost all value.

Man said...

There are 5 varieties of this 1972-D all equal in value. Only one version of the 1972 (non-D) is really valuable.

Hi, I have four wheat pennies; a 1952 S, 1950 D, 1945, and 1937. Can I retire from any of these or trade them in for more pennies, lol. Thanks.

Man said...

Assuming circulated and fine...

wheat pennies;
1952 S about $0.05
1950 D about $0.05
1945 about $0.05
1937 about $0.30

Keep working because these cents have little value.

If I planned on buying a $500 bill (USA 1928 or 1934), would that be a good investment in your opinion? Not asking you to predict the future, and I know it's not a coin, but do you have any predictions?

Anonymous said...

I know it isn't a coin, but if I planned on purchasing a $500 bill (US either 1928, 1934, or 1934A), what would your opinion be of its future. I know it's very common as far as the high denominations go, but I don't have the money for a $5,000 or $10,000.

Not too bright.
Tracking from 2004-2012 the value of an affordable (VF 1934 Dark Blue-Green Seal $500) has stayed the same at $750.00.

Most of the more rare types and highest grades have gone up by double the value but common ones seem to be staying low.

Man said...

No such thing, you must mean Indian Head cent.

About $40.00 in mint state, if red then $120.00 depending on grade.

Hi thnx for the info. how much would a 1964 pence cost in about 20-30 years? It was just a thought because I found 1at my infants school I wondered how much I would get for it when I am a fully grown adult?

Man said...

About $0.25 in 25 years, adjusting for metal value, the end of the Pence, the end of small change, and the fact these are common.

1934 pennies currently sell for $0.50 in low grade.

With the hole it has no collectors value but $2.00 would be fair.

This is not a real coin and made as a part of the package.

It only has metal value which is about $0.05 or more in brass.

This is more of a whiskey collectible and only has value if attached to an unopened bottle.
